SUMMARY:Stanford Blood Drive @ MCC East Bay
DESCRIPTION:As people of faith\, it is in our blood to help. With a 15-minute blood donation\, you can be part of a lifesaving journey that could save up to three lives. \n\n\n\nThe MCC community has saved nearly 375 lives! This is our 30th Jumu’ah blood drive\, and each has always been fully booked! \n\n\n\nLet’s continue that trajectory at this blood drive and keep all our Stanford Blood Center (American Red Cross is unable to accommodate our Winter blood drive this year\, but they will be at three other drives in 2025) guests busy when they set up in our Banquet Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on a Friday. Stanford Blood will also send a $20 e-gift card to the donor’s email address after the blood drive. \nSign up at: HTTP://mcceastbay.org/stanford \nHere are the daily and Jumu’ah Friday prayer service times: HTTP://mcceastbay.org/prayer \n\n\n\nIn 2025\, MCC will proudly host these quarterly blood drives during Jumuah services from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with our friends at the American Red Cross: \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday\, February 21\, 2025 (Stanford Blood Center)\nFriday\, June 6\, 2025 (American Red Cross)\nFriday\, September 5\, 2025 (American Red Cross)\nFriday\, December 5\, 2025 (American Red Cross)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Power Red donation targets O-\, O+\, A-\, and B—only. It takes 20-30 minutes because donors give two units of concentrated Red Blood Cells\, and platelets and plasma are returned. Blood diversity is essential. Now more than ever\, the American Red Cross needs the help of black blood donors. \n\n\n\nBlood donors report feeling a strong sense of satisfaction after donating blood. Why? Because helping others in need feels good. \n\nHere is a direct link to travel restrictions:  https://stanfordbloodcenter.org/travel/  If a donor has immigrated and traveled back to a malarial risk region each year\, please call to check on eligibility at 650-723-7831.\nTeens 16 can donate with parental consent\, and there are different height and weight restrictions for donors under 19.  The consent form is available at the blood drive and on the main eligibility pag\,e along with the height/weight information.  Here is a direct link to the consent form:  https://stanfordbloodcenter.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/05-F-X1-Form-Consent-for-Minor-to-Donate-Blood-v15.0.pdf\nPlease complete the Stanford pre-check on the morning of the Blood Drive to speed up the process. https://stanfordbloodcenter.org/sbc-precheck/\n\n\n\n\nIf you have visited India\, Pakistan\, or another high-risk malaria country and returned within the last 12 months\, you are not eligible to donate blood. See the latest travel-related restrictions to blood donation eligibility. \n\n\n\nEvery person who donates blood at MCC will receive a voucher for a free meal at iniBurger—Gourmet Burgers in Pleasanton. MCC congregation members Leeza and Abdullah Popal\, who own these establishments\, generously donate these vouchers to encourage community and congregation participation. \n\n\n\nMCC Youth: If you are 16 to 18\, here are the donor requirements and the parental authorization form link. \n\n\n\nOn the morning of the blood drive\, please complete the Rapid Pass online and bring the print-off to speed up the check-in process. Complete at https://mcceastbay.org/rapid \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:"Almost Sunset" Author's Event for Muslim Children with Graphic Novelist Wahab Algarmi
DESCRIPTION:Join us with the author of Almost Sunset to hear the story of a young Muslim American boy during Ramadan as he finds the balance between his family traditions and his secular middle school life. \n3 p.m. to 4 p.m. (immediately after the 2:30 p.m. Jumu’ah ends) | MCC Conference Room | Join us in person or watch virtually at mcceastbay.org/live \nAlmost Sunset follows a young Muslim American boy during Ramadan as he finds the balance between his family traditions and his secular middle school life. \nSponsored by Towne Center Books Pleasanton & MCC East Bay. \nWe are excited to host author of Almost Sunset Wahab Algarmi in conversation with author of Raised by Ghosts\, Briana Loewinsohn on Thursday\, February 20th at 4 pm (Pleasanton location\, 555 Main St).  Join us for a lively discussion about their books and how they became authors/artists. \nIn a contemporary middle grade graphic novel debut that Gene Luen Yang calls “funny\, endearing\, and an intimate look at a Muslim family\,” Almost Sunset follows a young Muslim American boy during Ramadan as he finds the balance between his family traditions and his secular middle school life. Perfect for fans of Swim Team and Chunky. \nWahab Algarmi is a writer and comic artist. He has been creating comics and a community space for other artists in the San Francisco Bay Area for years. Some of his past comic work includes The Society of Unordinary Young Ladies. \nSet in the author’s own teenage years\, Raised By Ghosts begins in 1991 with semi-autobiographical Briana in middle school. Classes are a bummer\, but lunches are worse; either spent alone\, or being teased. Traditionally a good student\, Briana is not doing well in her academics\, but keeps it a secret. Her parents (divorced) are a mess\, and largely absent. She spends a lot of time by herself. By high school\, she makes friends\, and those connections are her only source of happiness as they help each other navigate adolescence. But life at home with each parent remains fraught. When her relationships at school begin to falter\, she has no one to turn to\, forcing Briana to grapple with her sense of self-worth\, her longing for belonging\, and her desire for authenticity in her relationships. \nBriana Loewinsohn is a cartoonist living in Oakland\, CA. These days she teaches high school art and draws comic books. If she doesn’t text you back\, she is probably gardening. \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org

He is a Canadian-Egyptian authority who interprets the Quran. He was a member of the first team that translated the Ramadan night prayers (Tarawîḥ) live from the Sacred Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina (2002-2005). Khattab memorized the entire Quran at a young age and later obtained a professional ijâzah in the Ḥafṣ style of recitation with a chain of narrators going all the way to Muḥammad. He received his PhD\, M.A.\, and B.A. in Islamic Studies in English with Honors from Al-Azhar University’s Faculty of Languages & Translation. He lectured on Islam at Clemson University (OLLI Program\, 2009–2010)\, held the position of Lecturer at Al-Azhar University for over a decade starting in 2003\, and served as the Muslim Chaplain at Brock University (2014-2016). He is a Canadian Council of Imams member and a Fulbright Interfaith Scholar. He has served as an Imam in the US and Canada since 2007. He is the translator of The Clear Quran Series (2015)\, the author of The Clear Quran Series for Kids (2020)\, Shukran (an illustrated story for children\, 2020)\, The Clear Quran Series Dictionary (2021)\, The Nation of Islam (2011) and Outfoxing Fox News (2017)\, and contributor to the Encyclopedia of Muslim American History (2010). \n\nAbout the Translation:\nIt is pleasant to read\, easy to understand\, and noted for its clarity\, accuracy\, eloquence\, and flow. Approved by Al-Azhar and endorsed by the Al-Furqaan Foundation and The Canadian Council of Imams. About the Translation: For a translation to do justice to the Quran and capture its elegance and vigor\, it has to be accurate\, smooth\, eloquent\, and accessible. Unlike most popular translations\, The Clear Quran masterfully passes on all counts. To achieve accuracy\, the translator has used the most significant and most celebrated works of old and modern tafsir (Quran commentaries) and shared the work with several imams in North America for feedback and insight. For clarity\, every effort has been made to select easy-to-understand words and phrases that reflect the beauty\, flow\, and power of the original text. Along with informative footnotes and surah (chapter) introductions\, verses have been grouped and titled based on their themes to understand better the chapters\, their main concepts\, and internal coherence. Thanks to our dedicated team of scholars\, editors\, and proofreaders\, we believe that what you are holding is now the finest translation of the Final Revelation.

She has received Ijazah to teach Tajwid in the Hafs and Warsh recitations from the late eminent Syrian scholar Shaykh Abu Hassan al-Kurdi. Other ongoing endeavors include compiling manuscripts addressing female-related mental health and medical issues from a fiqh-oriented perspective. She is the Director of the Rahmah Foundation\, a non-profit organization that teaches traditional Islamic knowledge to Muslim women and girls. In this capacity\, she also heads the Murbbiyah Mentoring Program\, which trains young women to teach and mentor Muslim girls and teens. Ustadha Rania is both a wife and a mother; she has been counseling and teaching women classes on Tajwid\, Shafi’i Fiqh\, Ihsan\, marriage\, and raising children since 1999. \n\n\n\nLearn more about Dr. Rania and her work at http://med.stanford.edu/psychiatry/research/MuslimMHLab.html \n\n\n\nEvery Friday evening\, the MCC bustles with activity.
