He is a Canadian-Egyptian authority who interprets the Quran. He was a member of the first team that translated the Ramadan night prayers (Tarawîḥ) live from the Sacred Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina (2002-2005). Khattab memorized the entire Quran at a young age and later obtained a professional ijâzah in the Ḥafṣ style of recitation with a chain of narrators going all the way to Muḥammad. He received his PhD\, M.A.\, and B.A. in Islamic Studies in English with Honors from Al-Azhar University’s Faculty of Languages & Translation. He lectured on Islam at Clemson University (OLLI Program\, 2009–2010)\, held the position of Lecturer at Al-Azhar University for over a decade starting in 2003\, and served as the Muslim Chaplain at Brock University (2014-2016). He is a Canadian Council of Imams member and a Fulbright Interfaith Scholar. He has served as an Imam in the US and Canada since 2007. He is the translator of The Clear Quran Series (2015)\, the author of The Clear Quran Series for Kids (2020)\, Shukran (an illustrated story for children\, 2020)\, The Clear Quran Series Dictionary (2021)\, The Nation of Islam (2011) and Outfoxing Fox News (2017)\, and contributor to the Encyclopedia of Muslim American History (2010). \n\nAbout the Translation:\nIt is pleasant to read\, easy to understand\, and noted for its clarity\, accuracy\, eloquence\, and flow. Shaan holds a BA in Political Science from UC Davis and has pursued a passion for Islamic learning. He is a Canadian-Egyptian authority who interprets the Quran. He was a member of the first team that translated the Ramadan night prayers (Tarawîḥ) live from the Sacred Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina (2002-2005). Khattab memorized the entire Quran at a young age and later obtained a professional ijâzah in the Ḥafṣ style of recitation with a chain of narrators going all the way to Muḥammad. He received his PhD\, M.A.\, and B.A. in Islamic Studies in English with Honors from Al-Azhar University’s Faculty of Languages & Translation. He lectured on Islam at Clemson University (OLLI Program\, 2009–2010)\, held the position of Lecturer at Al-Azhar University for over a decade starting in 2003\, and served as the Muslim Chaplain at Brock University (2014-2016). He is a Canadian Council of Imams member and a Fulbright Interfaith Scholar. He has served as an Imam in the US and Canada since 2007. He is the translator of The Clear Quran Series (2015)\, the author of The Clear Quran Series for Kids (2020)\, Shukran (an illustrated story for children\, 2020)\, The Clear Quran Series Dictionary (2021)\, The Nation of Islam (2011) and Outfoxing Fox News (2017)\, and contributor to the Encyclopedia of Muslim American History (2010). \n\nAbout the Translation:\nIt is pleasant to read\, easy to understand\, and noted for its clarity\, accuracy\, eloquence\, and flow. Approved by Al-Azhar and endorsed by the Al-Furqaan Foundation and The Canadian Council of Imams. DESCRIPTION:Revive the Sunnah to go outside and look for the new crescent moon in the evening sky that will mark the beginning of Ramadan. \n\n\n\nJoin us in the MCC parking lot after Maghrib sunset prayers (6:04 p.m.) on Friday\, February 28\, and join in the excitement when the young crescent moon (hilal) ushers in the Holy Month of Ramadan. The Tri-Valley Stargazers will be in the parking lot (weather permitting) with high-visibility telescopes\, allowing us to peer into the night sky at 6 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n523 Southern Halal BBQ food truck will sell dinners\, and Habibi’s Falooda provide dessert from 5 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. \n\n\n\nMCC adheres to the traditional principle that Islamic lunar months begin and end based on confirmed\, verified naked-eye sightings of the new crescent moon globally. MCC will confirm the start of Ramadan on the evening of February 28 in its newsletter (subscribe at https://mcceastbay.org/newsletter). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n– If the moon is sighted (likely)\, the first night of Taraweeh will be after Isha (8 p.m.) on Friday\, February 28\, 2025\, and the first day of fasting will be Saturday\, March 1\, 2025.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n– If the moon is not sighted (unlikely)\, the first night of Taraweeh will be after Isha (8 p.m.) on Saturday\, March 1\, 2025\, and the first day of fasting will be Sunday\, March 2\, 2025.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe MCC website (mcceastbay.org) and the MCC’s automated phone menu (925-485-1786) will announce the start of Ramadan by about 7:15 p.m. on Friday\, February 28. \n\n\n\nSince sunset will be at 6:04\, we will likely be able to see the new moon by about 6:35 p.m. \n\n\n\nMCC observes the beginning and end of lunar months following the sighting of the crescent moon. As Muslims in our Ummah struggle in different aspects of our lives\, it is Allah ﷻ again who can assist us in times of need and make what we feel to be insurmountable a true victory for this life and the Next. \nJoin us or tune in to reignite our Badr inspiration in our lives! This was when only 313 Muslims heroically fought on the battlefield at Badr against seemingly insurmountable odds; this night in 2025 is especially relevant given the struggles of our brothers and sisters around the world. \nOn the 17th of Ramadan\, our Beloved Prophet ﷺ courageously led 313 Muslims into their first major battle against their adversaries. \nThe Qurayshi Meccans\, with their 1\,000-strong army\, were formidable opponents to the believers. As the two sides clashed on the battlefield\, the Quraysh were taken by surprise and retreated in fear. \nAngels descended upon the battlefield\, turning the tide in favor of the Muslims. This victory marked their success in the first battle fought against the disbelievers. \nThe Muslim community faced further challenges\, some of which resulted in less favorable outcomes. However\, the fledgling ummah persevered despite these setbacks\, paving the way for the continued dissemination of the Prophet’s message. \nThanks to the brave sacrifices of our predecessors 1400 years ago\, we are honored to continue spreading Islam’s uplifting message.

As homeschooling parents\, he and his wife recognized the importance of sharing knowledge\, and thus\, Burooj Library was born. They have two locations: 492 C Street in Hayward and 860 Hillview Court\, Suite 160 in Milpitas. \nSidi Arshan is a serial entrepreneur who started FridayHQ\, a Muslim community and fund that invests in Muslim startups. For those who wish to do Qurbani\, it is mustahab (or voluntary sunnah) to avoid cutting hair and nails until the Qurbani is slaughtered. However\, if you cut any hair or nails\, your Qurbani is accepted and does not affect the validity. \n\n\n\nDeeds of the Day of Arafah \n\n\n\nThe Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Fasting the day of Arafah expiates the sins of two years: the past one and the coming one.” (Muslim). Upon completing his MBA from the University of California\, Berkeley\, he transitioned into social impact consulting\, supporting nonprofits and philanthropic organizations. He now works at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)\, leading legislative advocacy campaigns across states to help build legal protections in areas such as immigration and free speech.  \nAfraz memorized the Qur’an after 8 years of study and conducts tajweed classes for the local community. Afraz expanded on his studies by attending Zaytuna College’s Summer Quranic Arabic Intensive\, completing a classical Arabic course through Studio Arabiya\, and studying under Imam Khalid Latif for several years. He is currently a seminary student at The Majlis in their Community Servants Program.  \nAs part of his community work\, Afraz serves as a teacher at Lighthouse Mosque in Oakland\, where he conducts weekly classes on Qur’anic engagement and spiritual development. He volunteers as a chaplain for jail populations and supports student programming at colleges like Los Medanos and Stanford. Afraz delivers khutbahs across the Bay Area and has led taraweeh at Berkeley Masjid and Lighthouse Mosque\, while also conducting nightly talks on the lessons found in each section of the Qur’an.

In Sunni Islam\, Ashura follows the traditions of Judaism with a day of fasting\, commemorating the parting of the Red Sea for Moses and his followers as they escaped Pharaoh. The Prophet Muhammad thought this tradition was worth following\, so he fasted and encouraged his followers to do the same. On this day\, Muslims fast and celebrate by reflecting\, showing respect\, and giving thanks. Is fasting required? Fasting is not compulsory during Ashura\, but some Muslims choose to fast for one or two days. This is because the Prophet Muhammad was said to have fasted on the day of Ashura. \nWhen is Ashura 2025?\nAshura falls on the tenth day of Muharram (the first month of the Islamic year) in the Muslim calendar\, which this year is Saturday\, July 5\, 2025. Islamic religious dates are tabular: they begin at sunset on the first evening and end at sunset on the second evening. The birth of a pluralistic Muslim community marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar and served as the key turning point for the first Muslims and the future of Islam. \nThe Hijrah also marks the start of a new chapter for humanity\, where freedom of faith and justice for all became the cardinal principles of the newly founded society and a model for us to aspire to. \nThe other two historical events took place on the 10th day of Muharram\, known as Ashura. After completing the migration to Medina\, the Prophet witnessed the Jews of Medina fasting to commemorate the victory of Prophet Musa (PBUH) and his people over the Egyptian Pharaoh. Prophet Muhammad then asked his companions to join this fasting tradition as a way to express their gratitude to Allah for saving Musa and his people. On the same day\, just six decades later\, the Prophet’s grandson Husayn ibn Ali was martyred in the Battle of Karbala. This was one of the saddest and most heartbreaking events in the history of Islam\, which we continue to mourn today. \nAs we commemorate Ashura\, for Prophet Musa and Imam Husayn\, we are called to re-commit to our struggle against all forms of tyranny and oppression and to seek liberty and justice for all.
