Congregation Zuhr prayer is from 1:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. We will provide space for lunch in the Banquet Hall.  \n\n\n\nUstadh Tariq Samady \n\n\n\nUstadh Tariq Samady is a native of the Bay Area with roots hailing from the ancient city of Kabul. He is a lifelong seeker of Islamic knowledge\, learning from a wide range of Muslim scholars – local and international. With blessings from his teachers\, he has contributed to various educational programs and gatherings of dhikr. \n\n\n\nHis research and editing interests span Qur’an and Hadith commentaries\, Philology\, Spirituality\, and Persian Poetry. Tariq is the founder of Circles of Light (حلق النور)\, a fledgling educational initiative focused on sharing sacred learnings and wisdom for the benefit of the community. He teaches Islamic Studies at ILM Tree and serves as Convert Care Coordinator for Ta’leef. \n\n\n\nAbout Circles of Light \n\n\n\nCircles of Light is a fledgling educational initiative focused on sharing sacred learnings and wisdom for the benefit of the community\, meant to assist in maximizing Dunya (this life) for our Deen (Faith). He gives wisdom to whomever He wills. Whoever is given wisdom has been given much good. But none pays heed except those with insight. (Quran). We are motivated by the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); the most beloved people to Allah are those most beneficial to the people. (Hadith). We seek to achieve this aim through our in-person educational programs and publications. \n\n\n\nAlmighty Allah ﷻ directs us in Sūratul Aḥzāb\, “Verily\, Allah and His Angels send blessings on the Messenger of Allah. You who believe invoke blessings on him and salute him with a worthy salutation.” Our purpose of invoking blessings upon the Beloved ﷺ leads to proximity to Almighty Allah ﷻ by obeying this command while simultaneously fulfilling our rights upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. It is crystal clear how vital the invocation of Ṣalawāt is for the believer\, and it is a Mercy of Almighty Allah ﷻ for its rewards to be multitudinous. Abundant Ṣalawāt upon the Beloved ﷺ leads to loving him and knowing his beautiful qualities. By that virtue\, degrees of purity are realized. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was so attached to him he’d let the cat sit on his lap while he gave his sermons. He’d even drink water that Muezza had previously been lapping up. \n\n\n\nThere are several well-known tales about Muezza. One says that the cat saved Prophet Muhammad from the deadly bite of a venomous snake. Another relates a time when Muezza was asleep on Prophet Muhammad’s robe when the call to prayers sounded. Although most people would have shooed away the cat\, Prophet Muhammad instead cut off the sleeve of his robe so Muezza could rest in peace. \n\n\n\nIslam instructs Muslims to revere cats. In fact\, mistreating a cat is considered a significant transgression.

Making Tahleel\, Takbeer\, Tahmeed and TasbeehIt is a Sunnah of our Prophet (PBUH) to recite the Tahleel\, Takbeer\, and Tahmeed as many times as possible on the day of Arafah and also on the days of Tashreeq (11th\, 12th\, and 13th of Dhul Hijjah). \n\n\n\n\nTahleel is to say “Laa ilaaha il-lal-laah”\n\n\n\nTakbeer is to say “Allahu Akbar”\n\n\n\nTahmeed is to say “Alhamdulillaah”\n\n\n\nTasbeeh is to say “Subhanallaah”\n\n\n\n\n\n4. Seek forgiveness from Almighty AllahThe Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: \n\n\n\n“On this day\, Allah\, the most Exalted\, descends to the nearest heaven\, and He is proud of His servants on the earth and says to those in heavens\, look at My servants\, they have come from far and near\, with hair dishevelled and faces covered with dust\, to seek my Mercy. Even if their sins are as much the sand or the froth of the sea\, I shall forgive them.”

It is the Islamic equivalent of Yom Kippur. \nIn Sunni Islam\, Ashura follows the traditions of Judaism with a day of fasting – commemorating the parting of the Red Sea for Moses and his followers to escape Pharaoh. \nThe Prophet Muhammad thought this tradition was worth following\, so he fasted and encouraged his followers to do the same. \nOn this day\, Muslims fast and celebrate by reflecting\, showing respect\, and thanks. \nIs fasting required?\nFasting is not compulsory during Ashura\, but some Muslims fast for one or two days. This is because the Prophet Muhammad was said to have fasted on the day of Ashura. \nWhen is Ashura 24?\nAshura falls on the tenth day of Muharram (the first month of the Islamic year) in the Muslim calendar – this year is Tuesday\, July 16. \nIn 2024\, the day is commemorated\, beginning on Monday evening and ending on Wednesday\, July 17. \nIslamic religious dates are tabular: they begin at sunset on the first evening and end at sunset on the second evening. The date changes each year as the calendar used by Muslims – the Hijri calendar – is ten to 12 days shorter than the Gregorian. \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \n\nMore talks & sermons on Muharram: https://mcceastbay.org/muharram\n\nThe month of Muharram is considered unique by all Muslims and is one of the four sacred months of the year\, which brings with it the day of Ashura\, or the “Tenth day” of the month when fasting is recommended (with or without the addition of a day prior or after). \nFollowing the Prophetic tradition\, MCC invites all East Bay residents to fast on the day of Ashura\, which starts on the evening of Monday\, July 15\, and ends on Tuesday\, July 16. \nThe first is the Hijrah\, the migration of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD. This birth of a pluralistic Muslim community marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar and serves as the critical turning point for the first Muslims and the future of Islam. The Hijrah also marks the beginning of a new chapter for humanity\, where freedom of faith and justice for all became the cardinal principles of the newly founded society and a model for us to aspire to. \nThe other two historical events occurred on the 10th day of Muharram\, called Ashura. \nAfter completing the migration to Medina\, the Prophet he witnessed the Jews of Medina fasting to celebrate the victory of Prophet Musa (PBUH) and his people over the Egyptian Pharaoh. Prophet Muhammad then asked his companions to join this fasting tradition to thank Allah for saving Musa and his people. \nOn the same day\, just six decades later\, the Prophet’s grandson Husayn ibn Ali was martyred in the Battle of Karbala. This was one of the saddest and most heartbreaking events in the history of Islam\, which we continue to mourn today. \nAs we commemorate Ashura for Prophet Musa and Imam Husayn\, we are called to re-commit to our struggle against all forms of tyranny and oppression and to seek liberty and justice for all. \nFollowing the tradition of Prophet Muhammad\, MCC invites you all to fast on the day of Ashura. At 14\, he moved overseas to Mauritania\, where he memorized the Holy Quran. From Mauritania\, he traveled to Jordan\, where he studied the Islamic sciences and traditional Islamic calligraphy for four years\, receiving Ijazas in Tajweed and Hadith narration. From Jordan\, he moved to Turkey\, where he completed his calligraphy training and learned Fiqh from the great Syrian scholars. Muhammad continues to study privately and has taught the Islamic Sciences for the past six years.
