It is the Islamic equivalent of Yom Kippur. \nIn Sunni Islam\, Ashura follows the traditions of Judaism with a day of fasting – commemorating the parting of the Red Sea for Moses and his followers to escape Pharaoh. \nThe Prophet Muhammad thought this tradition was worth following\, so he fasted and encouraged his followers to do the same. \nOn this day\, Muslims fast and celebrate by reflecting\, showing respect\, and thanks. \nIs fasting required?\nFasting is not compulsory during Ashura\, but some Muslims fast for one or two days. This is because the Prophet Muhammad was said to have fasted on the day of Ashura. \nWhen is Ashura 24?\nAshura falls on the tenth day of Muharram (the first month of the Islamic year) in the Muslim calendar – this year is Tuesday\, July 16. \nIn 2024\, the day is commemorated\, beginning on Monday evening and ending on Wednesday\, July 17. \nIslamic religious dates are tabular: they begin at sunset on the first evening and end at sunset on the second evening. The date changes each year as the calendar used by Muslims – the Hijri calendar – is ten to 12 days shorter than the Gregorian. \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \n\nMore talks & sermons on Muharram: https://mcceastbay.org/muharram\n\nThe month of Muharram is considered unique by all Muslims and is one of the four sacred months of the year\, which brings with it the day of Ashura\, or the “Tenth day” of the month when fasting is recommended (with or without the addition of a day prior or after). \nFollowing the Prophetic tradition\, MCC invites all East Bay residents to fast on the day of Ashura\, which starts on the evening of Monday\, July 15\, and ends on Tuesday\, July 16. \nThe first is the Hijrah\, the migration of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD. This birth of a pluralistic Muslim community marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar and serves as the critical turning point for the first Muslims and the future of Islam. The Hijrah also marks the beginning of a new chapter for humanity\, where freedom of faith and justice for all became the cardinal principles of the newly founded society and a model for us to aspire to. \nThe other two historical events occurred on the 10th day of Muharram\, called Ashura. \nAfter completing the migration to Medina\, the Prophet he witnessed the Jews of Medina fasting to celebrate the victory of Prophet Musa (PBUH) and his people over the Egyptian Pharaoh. Prophet Muhammad then asked his companions to join this fasting tradition to thank Allah for saving Musa and his people. \nOn the same day\, just six decades later\, the Prophet’s grandson Husayn ibn Ali was martyred in the Battle of Karbala. This was one of the saddest and most heartbreaking events in the history of Islam\, which we continue to mourn today. \nAs we commemorate Ashura for Prophet Musa and Imam Husayn\, we are called to re-commit to our struggle against all forms of tyranny and oppression and to seek liberty and justice for all. \nFollowing the tradition of Prophet Muhammad\, MCC invites you all to fast on the day of Ashura. From Jordan\, he moved to Turkey\, where he completed his calligraphy training and learned Fiqh from the great Syrian scholars. Muhammad continues to study privately and has taught the Islamic Sciences for the past six years. She credits her Islamic journey to 1996\, when she attended Islamic classes in Hayward\, California. Her teacher and mentor\, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf\, has taught these classes since then. \nOne of her main focus areas is to help create a strong sisterhood for women in the community by leading halaqas (spiritual study circles) and support groups while offering individual spiritual counseling and mentoring. She noted that many of the spiritual problems encountered were reflective of the deep and complicated mental health issues of the community and would be better served by focusing on mental health. At Zaytuna College\, he has taught Kalam Theology\, Creedal Theology\, Prophetic Biography\, Readings in Muslim Spirituality\, and Logic in the Islamic Tradition. Shaykh Faraz also serves as the coordinator of the Honors Program\, in which he has taught Kalam\, Prophetic Biography\, Logic\, Tafsir\, and Hadith. After completing undergraduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin\, he moved to Amman\, Jordan\, in 2004 and read classical texts with distinguished scholars in Ashʿarī and Māturīdī scholastic theology\, Hanafi jurisprudence\, prophetic narration\, logic\, and other religious sciences\, receiving scholarly authorization (ijāza) after seven years of full-time study. \nUstadh Ali Ataie is a perennial student and researcher who has been involved in interfaith activities for over two decades. While research on the prevalence of family violence among Muslims is just beginning\, Imams\, community leaders\, and social workers across North America confirm that Muslim women\, children\, and men are being affected by this devastating social problem. \nPhysical violence can lead to broken bones\, head injury\, vision loss\, and even death. Among victims\, emotional abuse leads to a broken spirit and feelings of hopelessness\, helplessness\, and oppression. \nDomestic abuse knows no boundaries. It occurs among well-known and little-known community members\, the rich\, the poor\, the well-educated and uneducated\, foreign-born and American-born\, and across all cultures\, races\, and religions. \nViolence against women is not an Islamic tradition. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed  us\, “I command you to be kind to women.” He said also\, “The best of you is the best to his family (wife). The Quran urges husbands to be kind and considerate to their wives. “Under no circumstances does the Quran encourage\, allow\, or condone family violence or physical abuse. Motherhood has the highest status in Islam. \nMarriage preparation education and premarital counseling can help future spouses learn skills that will assist them in developing a healthy\, violence-free family life. \nThis problem will not be eliminated unless we act. We must recognize the signs of spousal abuse and act to prevent it and work towards its elimination.
