Police are investigating the attack as a hate crime. \nThe three men killed were not strangers to one another\, and they were not strangers to the hundreds of families who walk through the doors of that center every week. They were the people who made it run. \nAmin Abdullah was the security guard. He was a father of eight. When two gunmen opened fire outside the building\, Amin stood his ground — and the San Diego Police Chief publicly credited him with “playing a pivotal role in keeping this from being much worse.” Teachers\, staff\, and more than a dozen children walked safely out of that building that afternoon because of what Amin did. He paid for that with his life. \n \nNader Awad was a community member and neighbor of the center\, and lived just across the street. When he heard the gunfire\, he ran toward it\, toward his wife and the community that was his entire life. He did not make it back across that street. \n \nAbul Ezz (Mansour Kaziha) worked in the center’s food store and was part of the daily rhythm of the masjid — one of the people who kept the community fed\, welcomed\, and at home in their own house of worship. \n \nTo God we belong\, and to God we return. \nWe pray that the deceased are in the highest levels of paradise. We ask God to envelope the loved ones left behind with His mercy and comfort in this time of extreme difficulty. The Muslim community is in grief and pain. \n\n\n\nThe Prophet ﷺ said: \n\n\n\n“The example of the believers in their mutual love\, mercy\, and compassion is like one body: when one part of the body suffers\, the whole body responds with sleeplessness and fever.” \n\n\n\nNarrated by Al-Nu’man ibn Bashir in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCommunity Security Safety Message \nThis is a Time for Prayer\, Unity\, and Vigilance.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAssalamu Alaikum\, Beloved MCC Community\,Like many of you\, we are heartbroken by today’s attack on the Islamic Center of San Diego (ICSD). Three members of our wider ummah were killed in a place that should have been a religious sanctuary\, including a security guard whose actions\, by all accounts\, saved many more lives. \nInna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. Indeed\, we belong to Allah\, and indeed to Him we return. \nOur prayers are with the victims\, their families\, and the entire San Diego Muslim community. At MCC\, we are implementing additional safety measures and working with the Pleasanton Police Department\, which is providing support. In the coming days\, we will ask for your cooperation\, even when it may be inconvenient.To help ensure the safety of our congregation\, we have arranged for armed security personnel to be present during our weekly Friday prayers and our upcoming Eid prayers. In recent months\, politicians and public voices have stoked fear and spread misinformation about American Muslims\, often casting them in dehumanizing ways and even claiming they do not belong in the country. When this kind of hateful rhetoric is normalized\, it lays the groundwork for violence and places entire communities at risk. While details are still emerging about the San Diego shooting\, three Muslim community members have been killed and authorities are investigating the shooting as a hate crime. \nAs people of faith\, we affirm that every person possesses inherent dignity and we reject language which dehumanizes anyone — whether it is used to fuel violence here at home or to justify war abroad. Here in the U.S.\, where religious freedom and freedom of conscience are founding ideals\, everyone deserves to worship and go to school safely\, no matter their faith or cultural background. No one should fear violence when they walk into their place of prayer or learning. \nWe pray that this tragedy awakens the conscience of those who have perpetuated and condoned the harmful and dehumanizing narratives about Muslims that have become so prevalent. As members of our coalition declared in a prayerful appeal to leaders on Capitol Hill this spring\, “The promise of equality\, freedom\, liberty\, dignity\, justice in America is not just for some\, but for all… We reject the scapegoating of our Muslims neighbors and we call on our elected leaders\, fellow faith leaders\, and all people of goodwill to stand shoulder to shoulder.” \nWe mourn with the community of the Islamic Center of San Diego and Muslim communities who are feeling this impact just days before Eid-al-Adha. Du’aa of Arafah The Prophet Muhammad\, peace be upon him\, said of the Day of Arafah dua: \n\n\n\n “The most excellent dua is the dua on the Day of Arafah\, and the best of what I and the prophets before me have said is “There is nothing that deserves to be worshipped in truth except Allah; he is Alone and has no partner\, to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise\, and He is All-Powerful over all things.'” (Muwatta) \n\n لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له ، له الملك ، وله الحمد ، وهو على كل شيء قدير \n\n\n\n3. Making Tahleel\, Takbeer\, Tahmeed and Tasbeeh It is a Sunnah of our Prophet (PBUH) to recite the Tahleel\, Takbeer\, and Tahmeed as many times as possible on the day of Arafah and also on the days of Tashreeq (11th\, 12th\, and 13th of Dhul Hijjah). \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTahleel is to say “Laa ilaaha il-lal-laah”\nTakbeer is to say “Allahu Akbar”\nTahmeed is to say “Alhamdulillaah”\nTasbeeh is to say “Subhanallaah”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n 4. Inspired by Dr. Mazen Atassi’s course\, Sacred Medicine: The Sacred Science of Alignment\, Balance\, and Right Relationship with God\, Creation\, and the Self\, the gathering invites participants to reimagine healing not simply as the treatment of illness\, but as the restoration of harmony between the soul\, body\, mind\, community\, and the Divine. \nRooted in vitalistic medicine\, Islamic spirituality\, and prophetic understandings of wellness\, the workshop will offer a grounded and embodied approach to holistic healing. Having embraced Islam at 19 in Santa Clara\, California\, he immediately began studying the Islamic sciences with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf and visiting Mauritanian scholars\, such as Shaykh Khatri Wuld Bayba and Shaykh Abd Allah Wuld Ahmadna. Shortly thereafter\, he traveled to Mauritania to pursue a full-time course of study where he could learn from one of Mauritania’s most outstanding scholars\, Murabit al-Hajj. Following an interim study period in Damascus\, Syria\, Shaykh Yahya spent the best part of seven years in Tarim\, in the Hadramawt Valley of Yemen. There\, he studied at the reputable school\, Dar al-Mustafa\, with the renowned scholars Habib Umar bin Hafiz and Habib Ali al-Jifri. Since then\, Shaykh Yahya has served as the official translator for Habib Umar and Habib Ali at various international speaking engagements\, including the Common Word Conference at Yale University in 2008. Upon returning to the United States\, Shaykh Yahya was a full-time instructor at Zaytuna College. He holds a B.A. in Near Eastern Studies from UC Berkeley and an M.A. in Islamic Studies from the Graduate Theological Union. He is pursuing a Ph.D. in Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Cambridge\, England\, in collaboration with Dr. Tim Winter (Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad). He is the Founding Director of al-Maqasid\, where he is a full-time scholar and teacher. At an early age\, he attended halaqas on Quranic recitation\, Tajweed\, Hadith\, and Aqida under prominent Syrian scholars\, including Dr. Mohammed Rateb al-Nabulsi and Shaykh Bassam Ajek of the Abu Nour Islamic Institute. After completing his undergraduate studies in engineering\, Mohammad moved to the United States to pursue a graduate degree. He has continued his Islamic studies abroad—focusing on the blessed Seerah\, Hadith collections\, and Hadith terminology—and has earned certificates under scholars such as Sheik Ghazwan Shurbaji and Sayydi Sheik Samer Alnass\, and is currently studying Hanafi Fiqh with Ustadh Tarif Arabi. \nAbout Circles of Light\nCircles of Light is a fledgling educational initiative focused on sharing sacred learnings and wisdom for the benefit of the community\, meant to assist in maximizing Dunya (this life) for our Deen (Faith). Born in London\, England\, he has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1983. After completing his religious studies\, Imam Tahir has served the Bay Area Muslim community since 2000. He also teaches Islamic Law at the renowned Zaytuna College\, America’s first Muslim liberal arts college\, located in Berkeley\, CA. In addition\, he is the founding board member of Averroes High School\, the Bay Area’s first Muslim high school. He is currently the chairman of the board of NISA\, the North American Islamic Shelter for the Abused\, an organization that works towards alleviating issues related to domestic violence. He has a passion for community service. He served on the Human Rights Commission for the City of San Jose for over 5 years and on the Human Relations Commission for the County of Santa Clara for one year. He also leads a group for Hajj each year. \nSidi Shaan Mukhtar \nSidi Shaan Mukhtar was born in the Bay Area and raised in the MCC community from a young age. Shaan has actively contributed to establishing MSAs at high schools and community colleges\, as well as youth halaqas\, at various mosques in the San Francisco Bay Area. Shaan holds a BA in Political Science from UC Davis and has pursued a passion for Islamic learning. He attended the Ilm Tree Homeschooling Cooperative during middle school\, where he studied Islamic Sciences under Shaykh Rami Nsour.   During college\, Shaan took a gap year to study Arabic in Jordan. He is currently pursuing his MA in Islamic Studies at the Islamic Seminary of America (TISA)\, where he studies alongside senior American Muslim scholars\, including Shaykh Yasir Qadhi\, Shaykha Tamara Gray\, and Dr. James Jones. Pray the pre-dawn prayer in congregation (6 a.m.)\, followed by recitations of Surah Yaseen and Al-Wird Al-Latif (booklets provided) in unison\, community dua\, and following sunup\, Salat al-Ishraq prayer in congregation. Qari Amar will also lead the Khatam (completion) of the Qur’an. Each month\, congregation members complete one Juz of the Holy Qur’an. Please finish your Juz by the first Sunday of each month.
