SUMMARY:Dua for our Brothers & Sisters | Qari Amar Bellaha & Dr. Asaad Traina
DESCRIPTION:“The parable of the believers in their affection\, mercy\, and compassion for each other is that of a body. When any limb aches\, the whole body reacts with sleeplessness and fever.” Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) \n\n\n\nJoin us to supplicate for our brothers and sisters in Palestine on Thursday and Friday evenings. Dr. Asaad Traina will lead with a short talk after the Isha Prayers (8 p.m.) followed by Salawaat & Dua Al-Nasri (Prayers of the Oppressed) by Qari Amar Bellaha. \n\n\n\n8 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. | Thursday\, Oct. 26 | Prayer Hall | Join in person or watch live at https://mcceastbay.org/liveIn the enormity of this moment\, MCC is responding to our sisters and brothers in Palestine by: \n\n\n\n\n– Our Jumu’ahs are dedicated to our sisters and brothers. Our Khateebs will make dua and encourage worshipers to give generously for humanitarian relief efforts in Gaza. MCC will absorb the credit card processing fees and send collected funds to Islamic Relief & UNRWA. Donate at https://mcceastbay.org/palestine\n\n\n\n– Our MCC youth are baking goods and selling in the MCC lobby during the Jumu’ahs for humanitarian relief efforts during Jumu’ah.\n\n\n\n\nMCC will cover the credit card processing fees so that 100 percent of our community’s donations go to two reputable organizations providing on-the-ground relief efforts in Gaza. Donate: mcceastbay.org/palestine \n\n\n\nThe Nasiri Dua is from the pen of the renowned Sufi Shaykh ibn Nasir ad Dari Rahimahullah of the Shadhiliyya Tariqa. Faced with the military power of France\, who were bombing villages in Morocco\, the Shaykh Rahimahullah wrote this Dua\, which was recited in every Masjid in the Maghrib in various different styles. This Dua had such an effect that the French President issued a law banning its recitation. Due to the barakah of this beautiful Dua\, Morocco gained independence from France. \n\n\n\nThe power of this Dua of Imam Muhammad ibn Nasir al-Dar’i lies in its simplicity\, its purity\, and its sincere supplication. It is essentially a plea to Allah that our transgressions be overlooked\, that divine mercy be bestowed upon us\, that social justice be restored in spite of us\, that wrongs be righted\, and that righteousness reigns once again in our lands so that the destitute may no longer be in need\, the young may be educated\, the animals’ purpose fulfilled\, rain restored\, and bounties poured forth. It is a plea to be freed from the aggression of foreigners in lands over which they have no right – a plea much needed in our modern world\, rampant as it is with invasions and territorial occupations. Ultimately\, it asks not to destroy our enemies but simply to halt their plots and the harm they cause. Its essence is mercy\, which in turn is the essence of the Messenger of Allah\, Muhammad\, peace and blessings be upon him: “And We have only sent you as a mercy to all the worlds.” \n\n\n\nPDF copy of the Nasiri Dua \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nhttps://youtu.be/rLvq6nyi_w8?si=v6s6IXqHsMZtqOKr

SUMMARY:Merits of the Plague: An Islamic Take on Pandemics | Dr. Mairaj Syed
DESCRIPTION:Islamic thinkers of the past had a surprisingly modern take on pandemics. \n\n\n\nIn the era of coronavirus\, join us for this much-needed Islamic perspective from 600 years – a preeminent meditation on plagues and pandemics from the Islamic world\, newly translated into English for the first time. \n\n\n\n7 p.m. to 9 p.m. | Friday\, November 3 | MCC Prayer Hall | Join us in person or watch virtually at mcceastbay.org/live \n\n\n\nPurchase limited copies of this book at the author’s event or pre-purchase (you will receive a guaranteed copy at the event for signing by the author) at mcceastbay.org/plague \n\n\n\nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \n\n\n\nNewly translated\, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani’s unique\, non-Western medieval perspective on the Black Death and pandemics in general is a landmark work of history and religious thought. \n\n\n\nThis spiritual/metaphysical guidance book deals with disease and suffering and is a powerful historical account of the plague in the Muslim world. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER & TRANSLATOR \n\n\n\nMairaj U. Syed is an associate professor at the University of California\, Davis\, specializing in religious studies and Middle East/South Asia studies. He has published extensively on Islamic law\, theology\, ethics\, and hadith literature\, including a book published by Oxford examining the relationship between reason and tradition in Islamic Thought\, titled Coercion and Responsibility in Islam. His current research includes computational methods to analyze hadith literature\, and he has received numerous grants for his work. He holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in Religion from Princeton University. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE BOOK Merits of the Plague By Ibn Hajar al-AsqalaniSix hundred years ago\, the author of this landmark work of history and religious thought—an esteemed judge\, poet\, and scholar in Cairo—survived the bubonic plague\, which took the lives of three of his children\, not to mention tens of millions of others throughout the medieval world. Holding up an eerie mirror to our own time\, he reflects on the origins of plagues—from those of the Prophet Muhammad’s era to the Black Death of his own—and what it means that such catastrophes could have been willed by God\, while also chronicling the fear\, isolation\, scapegoating\, economic tumult\, political failures\, and crises of faith that he lived through. But in considering the meaning of suffering and mass death\, he also offers a message of radical hope. Weaving together accounts of evil jinn\, religious stories\, medical manuals\, death count registers\, poetry\, and the author’s personal anecdotes\, Merits of the Plague is a profound reminder that with tragedy comes one of the noblest expressions of our humanity: the practice of compassion\, patience\, and care for those around us.Translated and introduced with notes by Joel Blecher and Mairaj Syed. Published by Penguin Classics. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHORIbn Hajar al-ʿAsqalani (d. 1449) was a medieval polymath—an innovative religious commentator\, a historian and biographer\, a judge on the highest court in Cairo\, an author of spiritual poetry\, and a textile trader from a powerful family of spice merchants. His masterpiece is a twelve-volume commentary on prophetic traditions called Fath al-Bari (Unlocking the Divine Wisdom)\, parts of which he incorporated into Merits of the Plague.PRAISE“Remarkable . . . A landmark work of history and religious thought . . . Surprisingly modern and has a lot to say to us in the era of coronavirus.” —History Unplugged Podcast“A valuable addition to our understanding of the pandemic and how people reacted to it . . . This book offers a much-needed perspective from the Islamic world.” —Medievalists.net“A unique\, non-Western medieval perspective on the Black Death and pandemics in general.” —Jara News
