SUMMARY:Zakat & Fasting for Children
DESCRIPTION:Children’s Author Aisha Gray Henry\, the charismatic founder of the Ghazali’s Children Project\, talks to our children about the timeless teachings of Al Ghazali in this two-part pre-Ramadan workshop series: \n\nApril 2: the special things about fasting that you never knew\nApril 9: a surprise story about how children can participate in Zakat (charity)\n\nSundays | 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. | Free | Register at mcceastbay.org/ghazali \nSponsored by Fons Vitae and MCC \nWatch: ‘Polishing the Heart’ – a major new documentary on the Ghazali Children’s Project documentary and Muslim children’s education. \n\nTrailer:  (2 mins) YouTube.com/watch?v=Czwvo-pERRk\nDocumentary:  (29 mins) https://conta.cc/3bHoUh2\nhttps://youtu.be/Sly38fCkeb0\nMore Sister Virginia Gray Henry: https://mcceastbay.org/aisha\n\nParents are encouraged to join with their children. Children of any age may join. The sessions are especially recommended for children 6 to 9. Sr. Aisha also highly encourages parents to have “The Book of Knowledge for Children” on hand during these sessions. Purchase the series here. \nShaykh Hamza Yusuf says about this book: “This work can help our Muslim children have a more humane and universal understanding of the ethics and teachings of Islam through Imam al-Ghazali. I believe the work is highly relevant and very likely life-altering for those who will be exposed to it early.” \n\nWatch Sister Aisha’s visit to the MCC Sunday School here.\n\nAbout the Author\nAisha Gray-Henry is the Founder and Director of the charitable foundation and publishing company Fons Vitae. Fons Vitae is currently engaged in the monumental task of bringing out Ghazali’s Ihya in readable English for parents and teachers as well as adapting it to accommodate children’s workbooks\, school curricula\, and an instructional DVD. The Book of Knowledge and The Principles of the Creed educational sets are available and in use internationally with Purity and Prayer nearing completion. Included is a children’s interactive website www.GhazaliChildren.org\, a pilot school project and prison program. Translations into Urdu\, Arabic\, and Malay are underway. The Fons Vitae Ghazali Project has been launched with great acclaim in Morocco\, Canada\, Indonesia\, England\, and the USA so far. \nWho is Al Ghazali?\nAn alchemist is a person who can create gold from base metals. It is a quest as old as legend. The truth is that alchemy exists\, but not of base metals\, but of the human heart. \nImam al-Ghazali (1058-1111 CE) is probably one of the greatest alchemists of all time. And in an epoch where the human condition is in its direst straits\, never more has there been a need for the chemistry of Imam al-Ghazali. \nA theologian\, jurist\, philosopher\, mystic and polymath\, Abu Hamid Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Ghazali is not only ranked amongst Islam’s finest scholars\, but is one of mankind’s finest students of the human condition. Known as Algazel to the mediaeval world\, he was born in Tus\, the Khorasan province of ancient Persia. \nWhen he had the academic world at his feet in his early thirties\, he spurned fame and fortune to go into a mode of self-denial and spiritual seclusion that lasted for many years. \nAlready an acknowledged master of Holy Law\, he re-entered society a practiced Sufi – a true gnostic. A genius\, Imam al-Ghazali was fully proficient in Greek and Roman philosophy\, and he debunked its central tenets\, proving that Revelation was always going to be superior to human reason. Human thinking could never evolve\, he wrote\, in an existential vacuum. \nIt was all of this that prompted him to write his magnus-opus\, the Ihya ‘Ulumad-Din (the Revival of the Religious Sciences). It is today regarded as one of the classic works on the human psyche. In the Ihya the author explains step-by-step how to turn one’s base instincts and desires into the golden ideal. \nToday’s modern world – devolved of spirituality and fraught with destructive ills such as materialism\, multi-national greed and violence – is in need of people like Imam al-Ghazali. This is because Imam al-Ghazali teaches a way to balance the body and the soul\, thus allowing us to reconcile modernity with spirituality in its very broadest\, and most universal\, sense. This event is for both men and women. \nSr Hosai’s wealth of knowledge runs deep\, as an mental health advocate and relationships\, and someone who has been working within the Islamic community for over 25 years\, mashaa’Allah!\n \nParenting is undeniably one of the most rewarding and simultaneously challenging experiences in this life. It is both a gift with unmeasured benefits\, as well as an immense understanding and responsibility from God. Islamic parenting is centered in devotion to God and predicated entirely on Qur’anic and Prophetic guidance – both of which are universal and timeless. Understanding parenting beyond commercialization\, and seeing it as an act of worship for the sake of Allah. Seeking refuge in Allah often to align one’s intentions as a parent with God-consciousness and reliance on Him. \nLesson 2: Prophetic Parenting\nThe importance of parents actively learning the seerah/sunnah and how to model their behavior after the Beloved. Creating a family culture devoted to every member of the family developing a strong character based on the prophetic model. Learning healthy communication skills from the prophetic model\, which are designed to prevent miscommunication\, hostility\, and disrespect. \nLesson 3: Balanced & Active Parenting\nThe importance of parents understanding what Islamic parental authority is defined by. Knowing the difference between authoritative vs. authoritarian parenting\, as well as negligent parenting where children are overly coddled\, excessively spoiled\, or have little to no oversight. \nThe importance of parents understanding that they must always be vigilant\, steadfast\, and\, no matter what challenges they endure\, must put their trust in Allah and practice perpetual gratitude. Understand that trials and tribulations are part and parcel of this world. Parents must be focused\, proactive\, and resourceful – shepherds tending to the flock – at all times. \nAbout Your Instructor\n\nUstadha Hosai Mojaddidi has been serving the American Muslim community for over 25 years as a teacher\, public speaker\, author/writer\, spiritual counselor and mental health advocate. SUMMARY:Garden Of Wisdom: Reflections From Sa’di’s ‘Gulistan
DESCRIPTION:Join Ustadh Feraidoon Mojadedi as he shares reflections from select sections of the acclaimed Gulistan during the month of Ramadan\, the month in which we hope our hearts and minds are able to embody the best of traits. \nSaturdays in Ramadan (April 9\, 16\, 23\, & 30) | 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. | Join in person in Conference Room or watch virtually at mcceastbay.org/live \n\n– More Sidi Feraidoon: https://mcceastbay.org/feraidoon\n– More Ramadan workshops: https://mcceastbay.org/ramadan-workshops\n\nThis event will also be live-streamed to Miftaah Institute‘s Ramadan Immersion program. \nFew works in traditional poetry and prose have gained prominence in the way Sa’di’s Gulistan has. Having spent a significant part of his life in the suhbah of scholars\, rulers\, and the righteous\, Sa’di decided to gather the most impactful stories and poems that would help the believer in internalizing the most important principles needed to navigate this Dunya. \nOBJECTIVES \nWhat will you learn? \n\n– A brief overview of the life and times of Sa’di and his legacy\n– Readings of select sections of the Gulistan\n– Reflections on the readings with a focus on the principle being presented\n– Discussions on practical methods to instill the principles in our lives during Ramadan and onwards\n\nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \nAbout the Speaker:\nUstadh Feraidoon Mojadedi is one of the most well-known and respected community leaders\, lecturers\, and entrepreneurs in the Bay Area – California. He was born in Herat\, Afghanistan and immigrated with his family to America during the Russian invasion of Afghanistan in 1985. After graduating from American High School and Chabot College he attended San Francisco State University where he majored in history. \nHe grew up in a household with a deep love and reverence for poetry. At the age of five\, he began to memorize poems by Rumi and other great poets. His love of poetry continued to grow and eventually developed into a passion and calling that would allow him to teach regular classes on Rumi throughout California\, the U.S.\, U.K.\, Canada\, Australia\, Malaysia\, Germany and even as far as Konya\, Turkey\, where Mawlana Rumi is laid to rest. The nuances of the Farsi language\, in which he is fluent\, allow him the unique ability to bring Rumi’s poetry to life and to help listeners recognize Rumi’s essential message of peace\, love\, coexistence\, and connection with the Divine. He is the author and performer of “Layla & Majnun\,” a play produced by Performing Lines in Perth Australia. \nUstadh Feraidoon spends his free time reading\, studying\, and lecturing on many topics including Rumi and a wide collection of Farsi poetry\, spirituality\, and self-development. He currently lives with his wife and two children in Dublin\, California. \nAbout the book:\nGulistān (Persian: گُلِستان\, romanized: Golestān\, lit. ‘The Flower Garden’; [golestɒːn])\, sometimes spelled Golestan\, is a landmark of Persian literature\, perhaps its single most influential work of prose. Written in 1258 CE\, it is one of two major works of the Persian poet Sa’di\, considered one of the greatest medieval Persian poets. It is also one of his most popular books\, and has proved deeply influential in the West as well as the East. The Golestan is a collection of poems and stories\, just as a flower-garden is a collection of flowers. It is widely quoted as a source of wisdom. The well-known aphorism still frequently repeated in the western world\, about being sad because one has no shoes until one meets the man who has no feet “whereupon I thanked Providence for its bounty to myself” is from the Golestan. \nThe minimalist plots of the Golestan’s stories are expressed with precise language and psychological insight\, creating a “poetry of ideas” with the concision of mathematical formulas. The book explores virtually every major issue faced by humankind\, with both an optimistic and a subtly satirical tone. There is much advice for rulers\, in this way coming within the mirror for princes genre. But as Eastwick comments in his introduction to the work\, there is a common saying in Persian\, “Each word of Sa’di has seventy-two meanings”\, and the stories\, alongside their entertainment value and practical and moral dimension\, frequently focus on the conduct of dervishes and are said to contain Sufi teachings. Idries Shah elaborates further. “The place won by the Golestan as a book of moral uplift invariably given to the literate young has had the effect of establishing a basic Sufic potential in the minds of its readers.”

In this three-part series\, we will cover some of the sunnah\, and relate them to the most common and relevant parenting challenges of our time. \nThe course will run every Sunday for the next three weeks\, at 11:30 a.m. PST. Each class will be two hour\, with a Q&A afterwards. It is free and it will be recorded and is available for viewing afterwards at https://mcceastbay.org/parenting\n \nLesson 1: Intentional Parenting\nThe importance of preparedness and education before marriage and parenthood.
