SUMMARY:Overdose Response Training Workshop | Yumna Battisha (Clinton Global Initiative (CGI))
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a life-saving training on opioid overdose awareness and response\, grounded in the Qur’anic reminder: “And whoever saves one [life]\, it is as if he had saved mankind entirely” (5:32). Overdoses often occur in public or shared spaces and are frequently witnessed by others\, making timely intervention critical. \nThis session will equip participants with the knowledge to prevent\, recognize\, and respond to an opioid overdose\, while also addressing the stigma surrounding addiction. Participants will gain the confidence to safely administer naloxone in an emergency and take meaningful action in critical moments. \nSaturday\, May 2\, 2026 | 11:30 a.m to 1:00 p.m. | MCC Conference Room | Free session; please RSVP at mcceastbay.org/overdose \nSponsored by The Clinton Foundation & MCC East Bay. \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org  \nAbout the Facilitator\, Yumna Battisha \nYumna Battisha is a UCLA graduate with a degree in Psychology\, currently working in overdose prevention and harm reduction. She serves as the Director of Public Relations at T.A.C.O. Inc. (Team Awareness Combatting Overdose)\, where she focuses on community outreach\, education\, and expanding access to life-saving resources such as naloxone and fentanyl test strips. She is also a fellow with The Clinton Foundation\, where she explores faith-based approaches to addressing substance use and the overdose crisis. Her work is centered on making harm reduction more accessible\, culturally relevant\, and stigma-free\, with a strong commitment to equipping communities with the knowledge and tools to save lives. \nWhy This Is Important\nThe U.S. overdose crisis is among the most pressing and indiscriminate health challenges of our time. More than 100\,000 Americans died from drug overdose during the 12-month period ending in April 2021\, up almost 30 percent from the same period a year earlier. One life lost due to overdose is one too many\, and more must be done to save lives. \nFaith leaders are a trusted source of support and information\, and can influence attitudes and practices at the individual\, household\, and community levels. Faith leaders can use their unique and powerful platform to shatter the stigma that all too often keeps addiction in the shadows and blocks access to supportive resources. When faith leaders know how to respond\, they become a vital part of the solution to ending addiction and the overdose crisis. \nWHAT IS THE EMPOWERING FAITH LEADERS PROGRAM?\nThe Clinton Foundation collaborates with state and local partners\, including Georgia’s Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities\, Savannah’s Interfaith Addiction and Recovery Coalition\, and the Georgia Council on Substance Abuse\, to train faith leaders to address addiction and the overdose crisis using evidence-informed\, compassionate approaches. The program is free of cost. \nFaith leaders who participate: \n\nBuild knowledge\, skills\, and confidence to address addiction and the overdose crisis.\nLearn about local prevention\, treatment\, and recovery\, and harm reduction resources.\nReceive $2\,000.00 in funding and technical support to plan and implement community-based engagement projects to raise awareness\, share resources\, and reduce stigma.\nExplore how different faith traditions view substance use\, addiction\, and recovery\, and build bridges across communities.\nJoin a state-wide and national network of faith leaders working to address the issues.\n\nCURRICULUM OVERVIEW \n\nMODULE 1: Overview of the Overdose Epidemic and Community-Based Needs Assessment\nMODULE 2: Introduction to Community-Based Engagement Projects and Program Evaluation\nMODULE 3: Science of Addiction and The Role of Faith Leaders\nMODULE 4: Interfaith Dialogue and Collaboration\nMODULE 5: Overdose Prevention and Naloxone Training\nMODULE 6: Addressing Stigma from the Pulpit and Beyond\nMODULE 7: Community-Based Engagement Project Planning\nMODULE 8: Evidence-Based Treatment for Substance Use Disorders\nMODULE 9: Recovery from Substance Use Disorders\nMODULE 10: Community-Based Engagement Project Outcomes and Sustainability Plans

Raised and educated in Al Beheira governorate\, he went on to study medicine at the University of Alexandria\, where he later served as Vice Director of both the University Children’s Hospital and the Therapeutic Institution — a distinguished career culminating in a Master’s and Doctorate in Pediatrics. \nDr. Nuaina mastered the Ten Qira’at under Shaykh Ahmad Al-Shawa and Sheikha Umm Sa’d of Alexandria — a blind scholar who was among the great transmitters of the classical recitation tradition. His mastery\, spiritual presence\, and adherence to the classical tradition of tilawah place him in a unique and honored position within the history of modern Quran recitation. \nOn October 14\, 2025\, he was appointed Egypt’s Chief Qari — a prestigious recognition of his skill and decades of dedication. His voice\, luminous and soul-stirring\, has graced stages across the globe: from mosques in Houston\, Virginia\, and Milwaukee in the United States\, to London and Ilford in the UK\, to Scotland and Cape Town\, South Africa — drawing thousands who come simply to sit in the presence of the Quran recited as it was meant to be heard. \nIn addition to reciting the Quran around the world\, Shaykh Nuaina has recited at the historic Al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo — one of the oldest and most revered centers of Islamic learning in the world — as well as the beloved Masjid al-Imam al-Hussain\, where crowds of worshippers would travel from every corner of Cairo simply to hear him recite. \nAcross continents and generations\, his voice has moved millions of hearts — a timeless reminder of the boundless power of the Word of Allah. \nThe Tanzeel Initiative: \nA US-based organization dedicated to reviving the timeless message of the Quran through education\, reflection\, and community-focused programs is proud to be arranging Shaykh Nuaina’s upcoming tour across the United States\, bringing this once-in-a-generation voice to Muslim communities nationwide. \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \n \n \nJoin us at the Muslim Community Center (East Bay) on Sunday\, May 3rd\, for an evening with the Chief Qari of Egypt\, reflecting on what it means to live by the Quran and how to inculcate its guidance in our lives. \nIn collaboration w/ Lafayette Masjid\, MCC East Bay\, SRVIC\, and Tanzil Institute. \nRSVP REQUIRED: tanzeelinitiative.org/events \n\nQari Ahmad Nuaina\nShaykh Zaki Ali\nQari Amar Bellaha\nQari Zian Ibrahim\nImam Yaseen Mahmoud\nUstadh Nakheel Dabbagh\n\nRefreshments will be served!

SUMMARY:Sacred Medicine: The Sacred Science of Alignment\, Balance\, and Right Relationship with God\, Creation\, and the Self
DESCRIPTION:This immersive full-day workshop explores sacred healing\, balance\, and spiritual alignment through the lens of the Islamic tradition of Hikma. Inspired by Dr. Mazen Atassi’s course\, Sacred Medicine: The Sacred Science of Alignment\, Balance\, and Right Relationship with God\, Creation\, and the Self\, the gathering invites participants to reimagine healing not simply as the treatment of illness\, but as the restoration of harmony between the soul\, body\, mind\, community\, and the Divine. \nRooted in vitalistic medicine\, Islamic spirituality\, and prophetic understandings of wellness\, the workshop will offer a grounded and embodied approach to holistic healing. Through lectures\, guided reflection\, somatic practices\, and interactive discussion\, attendees will explore themes including sacred medicine\, trauma healing\, fitra\, embodied presence\, and the integration of traditional Islamic wisdom with contemporary approaches to health and psychology. \nDesigned for both current and former students of Dr. Mazen’s programs at Cambridge Muslim College and The Hikma Academy — as well as new seekers interested in Islamic approaches to healing and spirituality — this gathering aims to cultivate meaningful learning\, reflection\, and community connection in an accessible\, transformative environment. \nHe will also be doing the Jumu’ah Khutbah at 2:30 p.m. at MCC East Bay on Friday\, June 5\, 2026. \nSunday June 7th | 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. | MCC Conference Room | Register at mcceastbay.org/sacred | In person $25 and Online $10 | Lunch option $12 \nAll materials are provided with the workshop. \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org  \nSchedule of events:  \nDr. Mazen Atassi \nDr. Mazen is also a student of Sidi Hakim Archuletta and has studied Arabic at Qasid Institute in Jordan\, alongside traditional studies in kalam\, fiqh\, seerah\, tajwid\, and tasawwuf both abroad and domestically.
