His first formal studies were in the Fine Arts which he studied in the 1960s in Berkeley where his expertise ranged from graphic arts to theater\, cinema\, and ethnomusicology. He studied homeopathy and apprenticed in London in the early 1970s. Thereafter\, he continued his studies in the Middle East\, England\, and North Africa in the mid-1970s and in Pakistan in the late 1970s\, where he earned the title of “Hakim”. Returning to the Americas in 1980\, he began teaching students privately and established a family practice clinic in Santa Barbara\, California. Today he lectures and teaches classes and workshops nationally and internationally on Islamic Medicine\, Somatic Experiencing\, and trauma therapy. \nHe has worked within the healing arts profession for over forty years. His interest in natural medicine\, the body\, and God’s Creation began as a young child. Previous\, formal studies were in Fine Arts\, graphic arts\, cinema\, theatre\, and ethnomusicology. \nAfter becoming Muslim he began the study of homeopathy with John Damonte in London\, was invited to study traditional Unani medicine in the manner of the Hakims by Hakim Muhammad Said of the Hamdard foundation\, and did so with various Hakims (traditional Islamic Doctors) his primary teacher being Hakim Taqiuddin Ahmad in Karachi where he also learned traditional pharmacy and was supported by grants from The Bawani Trust. \nReturning to the United States he began practicing what he had learned\, set up a family practice clinic in Santa Barbara California\, began teaching students and acting as a counselor\, taught science at the high school level for many years and ran many homeopathic study groups for professionals and laypersons. He began to travel and teach counseling\, and lecturing for many years at such institutions as UC Berkeley\, Harvard\, George Washington University\, Columbia\, Yale\, Wellesley\, Stanford\, University of Pennsylvania\, Oxford\, and many others as well as in communities across the country and the world. \nHe has students and patients across the world\, writes\, reads\, and organizes poetry readings\, he addressed and led the New Mexico State Legislature in prayer following 9/11 and more recently began to focus on trauma\, was trained in the methods of Dr. Peter Levine and others and does training in these principles and is developing these methods\, with students and colleagues\, within the foundations of our Islamic traditions. \nHe lives with his wife and son in the mountains of New Mexico. He works a great deal via the internet and travels often for workshops and lectures.

Shortly thereafter\, he traveled to Mauritania to pursue a full-time course of study where he was able to learn from one of Mauritania’s greatest scholars\, Murabit al-Hajj. Following an interim period of study in Damascus\, Syria\, Shaykh Yahya went on to spend the best part of seven years in Tarim\, in the Hadramawt Valley of Yemen. There\, he studied at the reputable school\, Dar al-Mustafa\, with the renowned scholars Habib Umar bin Hafiz and Habib Ali al-Jifri. \nSince that time\, Shaykh Yahya has been the official translator for Habib Umar and Habib Ali at various international speaking engagements\, including the Common Word Conference held at Yale University in 2008. Upon returning to the United States\, Shaykh Yahya served as a full-time instructor at Zaytuna College. He holds a B.A. in Near Eastern Studies from UC Berkeley\, an M.A. in Islamic Studies from the Graduate Theological Union\, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Cambridge\, England\, in collaboration with Dr. Tim Winter (Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad). \nHe is the Founding Director of al-Maqasid where he is a full-time scholar and teacher. Al-Maqasid’s mission is to cultivate holistic learning environments rooted in knowledge\, devotion\, and service by providing full-time\, part-time\, online\, and community programs. \nAbout Ustadh Amjad:\nUstadh Amjad Tarsin was born in Ann Arbor\, Michigan and spent his early childhood there. He has also lived in Malaysia and Saudi Arabia\, growing up within diverse cultures. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts at the University of Michigan in English Literature and Islamic Studies. It was during his university years that Amjad developed a deeper connection to his faith\, studying the Islamic sciences with teachers locally and internationally\, and became actively involved in community service and youth engagement. After spending a transformative year studying Islam abroad at Dar al-Mustafa\, Yemen\, Ustadh Amjad returned to America to start his studies at the University of Michigan Law School. Yearning to fulfill his calling to community building\, spiritual development\, and service\, Ustadh Amjad changed career paths and enrolled in Hartford Seminary’s Islamic Chaplaincy program. While completing his degree\, Ustadh Amjad worked as a part-time Muslim chaplain at Fairfield University\, Connecticut. In 2012\, Sidi Amjad was selected as the University of Toronto’s first full-time Muslim Chaplain. Ustadh Amjad continues to study and teach on a regular basis at SeekersHub Toronto. He currently resides with his wife and son in Toronto\, Canada. \nUstadh Hasan Petrus was born and raised north of the border in Montreal\, Canada. His pursuit of sacred Islamic knowledge has taken him to two continents to sit at the feet of those who still carry unbroken chains of sacred learning. During his stay in South Africa\, Ustadh Hasan focused primarily on Quranic Studies. He subsequently moved to Tarim\, Yemen\, to study at Dar al-Mustafa.
