SUMMARY:Surah Fatihah Workshop | Ustadh Ashir Kirk
DESCRIPTION:We all know Surah Fatiha like the backs of our hands. We can recite it in our sleep! However\, do we all recite it correctly? With proper tajwid? \nCome to this free two-hour workshop with your own Qur’an\, humility\, a sense of humor\, and an open mind. And bring a friend! \n10 a.m. to noon | Saturday\, September 10 | MCC Conference Room | No charge or RSVP needed to attend | Please register only if you want to join the post-workshop lunch from noon to 1 p.m. at mcceastbay.org/workshop-lunch \n**The workshop is free. Paid lunch only from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. after the program. Please purchase a lunch ticket only if you’d like to join Ustadh Ashir and other attendees for a meal after the workshop ends. Food provided by IniBurger (hamburger and fries). Purchase a lunch at mcceastbay.org/workshop-lunch \nJoin in person (much preferred) or watch virtually at mcceastbay.org/live \nIn this seminar\, Ust. Ashir Kirk will give us a letter by letter\, word by word\, and ayah by ayah breakdown of the tajweed of Surah Fatihah. This is an interactive\, engaging family event about the most important surah in the Quran. \nThis workshop\, part of the Surah Fatihah National Tour\, is sponsored by Measured Tones Institute of Quran and MCC East Bay \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \n“Indeed We have granted you [O Messenger] the Seven Frequently-Repeated [verses] and the Tremendous Recital.” (15:87) \nExperts in Qurʾanic commentary have explained that this verse is a reference to Sura al-Fatiha – due to it being repeated by believers multiple times a day in their prayers. They also say that the Tremendous Recital (al-Qurʾan al-ʿAẓīm) is also a reference to the same sura. Its greatness is such that Allah expressed what a great favor He had done to the Messenger of Allah\, Allah bless him and give him peace\, by referring to it with two great titles – as though each is a separate entity. \nHaving a deep understanding of this sura is essential for those wishing to imbue their prayers with deep devotion and a sense of presence with their Lord. One of the names of the sura is “The instruction of how to ask.” \nIn this free two-hour workshop\, Ustadh Ashir Kirk beautifully explains the rich\, nuanced meanings of this sura – connecting each point with the deeper meanings of living Islam and attaining closeness to Allah. It’s unmissable. \nOur learning outcomes:\n\n– Discuss the virtues and importance of the Fatiha.\n– Understand the rich\, nuanced meaning of this sura.\n– Apply the lessons in their daily lives.\n– Transform their prayers by reciting with reflection.\n– Acquire the tools necessary to attain presence in prayer.\n\nAbout the presenter:\nUstadh Ashir Kirk is the founder and Executive Director of Measured Tones Institute of Quran. Born to a Muslim convert mother\, he started studying Quran at the age of 10. At 16\, he dropped out of high school to pursue his Quranic studies in Damascus for 4 years and 2 years in Morocco\, before moving back to the States to continue studying. He received ‘ijaazah in both Hafs Shatibiyyah and Tayyibatun Nashr. \nUstadh Ashir received the Muhammad Ali scholarship to Bayan Theological Seminary in Chicago to pursue his Masters of Divinity with a concentration in Islamic Chaplaincy. When he’s not focused on MTI\, he divides his time between running two businesses\, working with nonprofits\, and his local masjid in Memphis\, TN. \nWhat: The Surah Fātihah National Tour is a highly engaging workshop that focuses solely on the tajweed of Surah Fātihah. Even though Surah Fātihah is the surah we all know the best\, there are many common tajweed hiccups that people make when reciting it. Some of the errors are major and result in changing the meaning of the surah while some are basic. In this workshop\, we hone in on all of them by addressing them one by one from start to finish. \nWhy: Surah Fātihah is the only surah in the entire Quran which is obligatory to recite for salah to be valid. Therefore\, most scholars have said that perfecting its recitation is an absolute necessity. \nWho: This workshop is intended for the whole family\, whether you are a revert or born Muslim. If you have Surah Fātihah memorized\, then it is for you. There is no age limit nor is there a specific target demographic. \nHow: \n\n\n\n– Brief intro to the noble science of tajweed\n– Conduct a thorough analysis of āyah 1 by identifying common errors\n– Correct each error one by one from start to finish\n– The audience engages and chimes in all throughout\n– Recite full aayah collectively\n– Open floor for volunteers to have recitation examined\n– Repeat for āyāt 2-7\n\nGoal: The primary goal is to work towards perfecting our recitation of Surah Fātihah while igniting a desire to correctly recite all of what we have memorized. In doing so\, we hope to further enhance the richness of our prayer as well as our love for Allaah’s Book. By the end of the workshop\, our view of Quranic recitation will be forever transformed\, insha’Allaah. \n\n\nSurah Al-Fatiha with English Subtitles | Qari Amar Bellaha: https://youtu.be/dptfgu2NW0s

SUMMARY:The Future of Islam | Author Haroon Moghul
DESCRIPTION:Haroon Moghul\, author of 2Billion Caliphs and How to be a Muslim\, will speak as part of MCC’s Friday Night Family Series. \nMaghrib to Isha (7:06 p.m. to 9 p.m.) | Friday\, September 23 | MCC Prayer Hall or watch virtually mcceastbay.org/live \nLimited dinner box sales from 6:15 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Banquet Hall. \nSidi Haroon will speak about a vision of a Muslim future. He will explain the attraction of Muslims to their faith\, discusses the challenges contemporary Islam confronts\, and how we might imagine an Islamic theology and identity ready to face tomorrow as well as why Muslims often fail to acknowledge that our internal pluralism isn’t a flaw so much as it’s an embracing design feature of Islam. \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \nEach month\, MCC invites insightful American Muslims who are making a positive impact on our community to speak at its Friday Family Night speaker series. \n\n– More from our Friday Night Series: https://mcceastbay.org/friday-night\n\nHaroon Moghul is an author\, essayist\, and Friday sermon preacher. An award-winning journalist and opinion columnist\, his articles have been featured by The New York Times\, NPR’s Fresh Air\, CNN\, TIME\, Foreign Policy\, and The Guardian\, among many others. He’s also appeared on all major US news networks and many international channels like the BBC and Al-Jazeera as an expert commentator on Islam and Muslim communities. Haroon is the author of several books\, including How to be a Muslim: An American Story (2017)\, which was glowingly reviewed by The Washington Post and NPR’s Fresh Air\, as well as Two Billion Caliphs: A Vision of a Muslim Future (2022)\, which argues for more dynamic and egalitarian Muslim communities. He has served as an expert guide to the Islamic heritage and legacy of Muslim Spain\, Turkey\, and Bosnia. Haroon has spoken about his faith at universities\, houses of worship\, and conferences on five continents. Raised in a family of religious scholars\, he played a formative role in the development of the Islamic Center at New York University. After completing his undergraduate studies in Philosophy and Middle Eastern Studies at that institution\, he continued with a focus on Islamic thought in colonial South Asia at Columbia University\, supplemented by extensive research and learning in Egypt and Pakistan. After spending much of his life in the American northeast\, he recently moved to Ohio\, where he’s become a stepfather. He writes about the challenges and joys of raising Muslim kids at a new Substack called Sunday Schooled. Learn more about him at https://www.haroonmoghul.com \nHaroon Moghul’s many books include My First Police State\, The Order of Light\, and How to Be Muslim: An American Story\, a “profound and intimate” (The Washington Post) memoir about life in the United States during the immediate aftermath of 9/11. A former member of the cohort of the Muslim Leadership Initiative\, a fellow in Jewish-Muslim Relations at the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America\, a Friday preacher\, and public speaker\, Moghul’s writing investigates the topics of pop culture\, faith\, futurism\, and philosophy. He has contributed essays to The New York Times\, The Guardian\, CNN\, Foreign Policy\, and NPR’s Fresh Air\, among several other media outlets. In Two Billion Caliphs\, Moghul uses his Muslim perspective to answer some of life’s biggest questions and to address Islam’s misunderstood past\, its present challenges\, and the hope it can offer for the future. \nAbout the Book\, Two Billion Caliphs: A Vision of a Muslim Future\nExplains the attraction of Muslims to their faith\, discusses the challenges contemporary Islam confronts\, and how we might imagine an Islamic theology and identity ready to face tomorrow. \nIslam is often associated with and limited to the worst of the world—extremism\, obscurantism\, misogyny\, bigotry. So why would so many people associate with such a fundamentalist faith? Two Billion Caliphs advocates for a way of being Muslim in the world\, ready for today and prepared for tomorrow. Unlike stale summaries\, which restrict themselves to facts and figures\, Haroon Moghul presents a deeply Muslim perspective on the world\, providing Islamic answers to universal questions: Who are we? What are we doing here? What happens to us when we die? And from description\, Moghul moves to prescription\, aspiring to something outrageous and audacious. Two Billion Caliphs describes what Islam has been and what it is\, who its heroes are\, what its big ideas are\, but not only to tell you about the past or the present\, but to speak to the future. \nTwo Billion Caliphs finds that Islam was a religion of intimacy\, a faith rooted in and reaching for love\, and that it could be and should be again. Fulfilling that destiny depends on the efforts of Muslims to reclaim their faith\, rebuild their strength\, and reimagine their future\, on their own terms. Two Billion Caliphs offers Muslim thoughts for the age ahead\, to create an interpretation Islam of and for days to come\, the kind of religion the world’s Muslims deserve\, with echoes of the confident faith Muslims once had. The destiny of Islam\, then\, is not\, as so many prefer to argue\, a reformation. It is a counter-reformation. A restoration of what once was. \n\n\n\n\nHaroon Moghul is an author\, public speaker\, and occasional Friday preacher\, who is passionate about the role of faith in building a better human future. A one-time stand up comic in New York City (literally\, just that one time) and award-winning journalist and opinion columnist\, his essays have been featured by The New York Times\, NPR’s Fresh Air\, CNN\, The Washington Post\, Foreign Policy\, NBC\, TIME\, Newsweek\, Haaretz\, and The Guardian\, among many others. \nHe’s appeared on all major US news networks as an expert commentator on Islam and the West’s relationship with Muslim communities and countries. He’s also the author of several books\, including How to be a Muslim: An American Story (2017) and his latest\, Two Billion Caliphs: A Vision of a Muslim Future. Previously\, Haroon was the Fellow in the National Security Studies Program at the New America Foundation\, a Fellow at the Center on National Security at Fordham Law School. \nHe has dedicated years to building bridges between faith communities across America and the world. His latest project is a Substack\, Sunday Schooled\, which helps Muslim parents and other parents of faith raise kids who love and live their values.

SUMMARY:Gender Roles: The Intersection of Culture & Islam | Ustadha Hosai Mojaddidi & Imam Ahmad Deeb
DESCRIPTION:Join this interactive community conversation with Ustadha Hosai Mojaddidi & Imam Ahmad Deeb\, examining the generational differences in gender expectations. We will discuss what Muslim women and men expect from one another and the origin of those expectations.Ustadha Hosai Mojaddidi is a public speaker\, teacher\, writer\, spiritual counselor\, mentor\, and Mental Health Advocate. Imam Ahmad Deeb is an Imam\, counselor\, and Certified Coach Outreach Ambassador for Bayan Islamic Graduate School.  \n\n\n\n6 p.m. to 8 p.m. (Maghrib to Isha) | Friday\, December 30 | MCC Conference Room | In person or watch online at mcceastbay.org/live \n\n\n\nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org   \n\n\n\nSponsored by Bayan Islamic Graduate School\, West Valley Muslim Association and MCC East BayUstadha Hosai Mojaddidi was born in Afghanistan and moved to the United States with her family at age two. She credited her Islamic journey to 1996 when she began attending Islamic classes in Hayward\, California. These classes were taught by her teacher and mentor since then\, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf. \n\n\n\nOne of her main areas of focus is to help create a strong sisterhood for the women in the community by leading halaqas (spiritual study circles) and support groups while offering individual spiritual counseling and mentoring. She noted that many spiritual problems reflected the community’s deep and complicated mental health issues and would be better served by focusing on mental health. Thus\, along with her cousin\, Dr. Nafisa Sekandari\, co-founded a website called Mental Health 4 Muslims (www.mentalhealth4muslims.com). \n\n\n\nImam Ahmad Deeb \n\n\n\nHis grandfather Dr. Sheikh Ramadan Deeb\, one of the oldest living scholars in Damascus\, is a renowned Syrian scholar who built important bridges between western and eastern scholarship. He grew up watching his father\, Shaykh Abdallah Deeb\, lead a Muslim community in Orlando\, Florida. \n\n\n\nBut\, even though he was born into a family of Muslim scholars\, Imam Ahmad Deeb struggled as a teenager seeking answers to fundamental questions about religion. \n\n\n\nIt wasn’t until University\, when he began attending a local halaqa and listening online to Shaykh Hamza Yusuf\, that Imam Deeb felt his mind and his heart begins to find a connection to Islam. Upon graduation\, he turned his focus to seeking knowledge at a higher level. \n\n\n\nShaykh Muhammad bin Yahya al-Husayni al-Ninowy\, a family friend\, invited him to join a Madina Institute pilot program he was starting in South Africa. Imam Ahmad Deeb spent a year at the Madina Institute in Cape Town. When he returned\, he continued studying with local scholars\, including his father and began a Master’s in Islamic Studies at Bayan Islamic Graduate School in Claremont\, California. \n\n\n\nToday\, Imam Ahmad Deeb is the Imam at the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo\, located in one of the oldest Muslim communities in North America. He is the co-founder of Pillars Seminary alongside Shaykh Ismail Bowers\, which focuses on teaching the foundational Islamic sciences to busy professionals\, as well as the co-founder of Itqaan Institute\, dedicated to developing a love of God through a relationship and mastery of reciting the Qur’an\, with his father as the primary teacher and leader. \n\n\n\nHis story intersects with many familiar names: Shaykh Ramadan Deeb\, Shaykh Muhammad bin Yahya al-Ninowy\, Shaykh Abdallah Deeb\, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf\, Dr. Sherman Jackson\, Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad / Timothy J. Winter\, Shaykh Jihad Hashim Brown\, Shaykh Ismail Bowers\, Ustadh Arthur Richards Jr.\, Dr. Ali Shahata\, Imam Mohamed Masri. \n\n\n\n\nGender Roles Symposium
