SUMMARY:The History and Heritage of Arabic Calligraphy | Master Calligrapher Khalid Casado
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an enlightening evening as we delve into an introduction to Islamic calligraphy art by a classically trained calligrapher (hattat) whose works of art are created through a unique combination of inspiration\, meditation\, and rigorous discipline. \nMaster Calligrapher Khalid Casado will also lead a full-day workshop on Saturday\, February 8. \n7 p.m. to 9 p.m. | Friday\, Feb. 7 | MCC Prayer Hall | Free | Join in person or watch virtually at mcceastbay.org/live  \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org  \nPlease also join us for one of the limited spots at a full-day workshop the following day: https://mcceastbay.org/event/calligraphy-workshop \nAbout the Speaker\n \nPablo Casado\, also known as Khalid\, was born in Madrid\, Spain\, where he has lived and developed personally and academically.  \nAlthough he always felt a unique attraction towards the shapes of Arabic calligraphy\, it was not until 2008 that he connected with the reed pen for the first time at a brief introductory course to nesih calligraphy. Only a few days of practicing this art were enough to awaken a deep interest in him\, and he soon felt the need to receive further instruction from an absolute master who could transmit this ancient knowledge. He then met Nuria García Masip\, the renowned calligrapher based in Paris and featured in Beauty in Solitude Part 3. Guided by her\, he traveled to Istanbul for the first time in 2009 and became acquainted with her masters. This is how he started writing his first lessons with her help and with the master calligrapher (hattat) Davut Bektas\, and always under the supervision of the master Hassan Çelebi. Two years later\, he began lessons with the master hattat Ferhat Kurlu\, who\, together with Nuria García\, became one of his strongest influences. \nIn 2014\, and after having devoted himself entirely to learning this art\, he received his icazet or calligraphy diploma in sülüs and nesih styles in IRCICA (Research Center for Islamic History Art and Culture)\, signed by the masters Hassan Çelebi\, Ferhat Kurlu\, and Nuria García. \nCurrently\, he continues to travel regularly to Istanbul and spend extended periods there in order not to lose contact with his masters and to continue learning and refining his work. \nTo view his work\, you can visit www.instagram.com/sacredlinesart or www.sacred-lines.com

Generally considered a moderately challenging route\, it takes an average of 2 h 23 min to complete. This is a popular trail for hiking\, horseback riding\, and mountain biking\, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. The best times to visit this trail are January through May. \nTrail Highlights: This challenge takes you near the very top of Brushy Peak and contains some fairly steep sections to enjoy along the way. The trails start with a grassy and relatively smooth incline. It then begins to pass through outcroppings of sandstone that add texture to the landscape\, and possible tripping hazards along the trail! When you reach the top of the climb\, you are rewarded with views of the rolling hills and ranchlands that surround the park. As temperatures heat up in the summer\, this trail is best when the grass – es are green during or just after the wet season. \nTrail Directions: From Laughlin Ranch Staging Area\, walk past the restrooms and information panel\, then slightly right to reach the Laughlin Ranch Loop Trail – head. After walking through the first gate\, turn left to follow Laughlin Ranch Loop Trail\, which merges Left into the Tamcan Trail. Follow for 1.11 miles\, until you reach the junction with Brushy Peak Loop Trail. Turn right onto the trail and continue for another 2.5 miles. Once you reach the junction with West Side Loop Trail\, turn left and continue for 0.93 miles\, to complete the loop. Make sure to keep right around the cattle pond\, as there are many branching\, small trails. Safely cross Laughlin Road to re-enter Laughlin Ranch Staging Area to finish your hike. \nPark Features: This parkland provides a pleasant get – away with active wildlife on the ground and in the sky. Brushy Peak is a 1\,702-foot landmark at the juncture of the San Francisco Bay Area\, the California Delta\, and the Central Valley. Many animals live in these hills and oak groves\, including meadowlarks\, coyotes\, rabbits\, and several species of hawks and reptiles.

We also highly encourage you to fast on that day and join us for a community Iftar in the evening. Join us in this annual commemoration of laylatul-bara’ah (the Night of Innocence). \n– Past talks commemorating Nisf Sha’ban: https://mcceastbay.org/shaban \nAbout Nisf Sha’ban\nThe month of Shaban is the eighth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The fifteenth night of this month is known as laylatul-bara’ah (the Night of Innocence) or Laylat un-Nisf min Shaban (the Middle Night of Shaban or shab-e-barat). \nIt has been narrated that the Messenger of Allah\, blessings and peace be upon him\, said: “There are five nights on which dua is not rejected: the first night of Rajab\, the fifteenth night of Sha‘ban\, Thursday night\, the night before Eid al Fitr and the night before Eid al Nahr (al Adha).” (al Suyuti) \nLocally\, for those who follow moonsighting\, the 15th night of Shaban starts on the evening of Thursday\, February 13. This is a special night for making dua and other acts of worship. Our faith also teaches us to fast on the 15th day of Shaban (Friday\, February 15) and the 16th day of Shaban (Saturday\, February 15) as recommended acts. \nFor more information\, see the following links: https://muwasala.org/2015/05/17/merits-of-shaban/ \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \n \nAllah (swt) forgives many of His servants on this night\nThe primary blessing of this night is that Allah pours His mercy and forgiveness upon the earth from Maghrib until Fajr. The Prophet (saw) described the extent of His forgiveness in powerful language in numerous narrations: \nThe Prophet (saw) said\, ′Allah gazes at His creation on the fifteenth night of Sha’ban and then forgives all His slaves except for two types of people: those who attribute partners to Allah and those who have rancor for their fellow Muslims’. [Ahmad] \n(In other narrations\, he (saw) mentioned more categories of people who wouldn’t be forgiven\, including those who severed the ties of kinship and those who disobeyed their parents\, among others). \nAishah (ra) also narrated that the Prophet (saw) once remained in Sajdah for so long during this night that she became scared and touched his foot to make sure he was still alive. He (saw) moved his foot\, and she heard him reciting the following du’a: \n \nThe Prophet (saw) also said to Aishah (ra)\, ′Allah descends on the night of the middle of Sha’ban to the lowest heaven\, and He forgives more than the numbers of hairs on the sheep of Banu Kalb (an Arab tribe renowned for their great flocks of sheep)’. [Ibn Majah and others] \nFinally\, the Prophet (saw) said that on this night\, from sunset until dawn\, Allah asks His servants\, ′Is there anyone seeking forgiveness from Me so that I may forgive him? Is there anyone seeking provision from Me so I may provide for him? Is there anyone suffering so I may relieve his suffering?′ [Ibn Majah] \nTherefore\, make du’a for forgiveness on the 15th night of Sha’ban. Increase your dhikr\, and ask Allah for forgiveness\, mercy\, relief from suffering\, and provision. Remember to forgive anyone you have a grudge against and resolve your problems with them\, especially if they are family members so that Allah will forgive you. \nFasting on 15th Sha’ban\nThere is only one weak hadith regarding fasting on the 15th day of Sha’ban. However\, it is from the Sunnah to fast the Bright Days (the 13th\, 14th and 15th) of every month anyway. (You can learn more on our blog about the Bright Days). \nFurthermore\, it is from the Sunnah of the Prophet (saw) to increase our voluntary fasts during Sha’ban\, as this is the month in which actions are raised to Allah: \nPrescribed prayers for this night\nAgain\, the hadith regarding prescribed prayers for this night – such as prayers of fourteen raka’at – are weak Hadith\, so it cannot be considered a Sunnah practice. However\, you can still perform nafl (voluntary) prayers tonight to benefit from its blessings. As Ibn Taymiyyah (rh) says\, ‘Some of the pious predecessors used to devote this night (15th Sha’ban) for Salah especially’. \nMoreover\, the Prophet (saw) always encouraged performing nafl prayers and making du’a at night\, particularly during the last third of the night. This is the case for any night in the year. \nIs this the Night of Destiny?\nMost scholars agree that the night of 15th Sha’ban is not mentioned in the Qur’an. \nSome commentators have said that the night of 15th Sha’ban is mentioned in Surah Ad-Dukhan – ‘Indeed\, We sent it [the Book] down during a blessed night. Indeed\, We were to warn [mankind]. On that night\, every precise matter is made distinct. [The Noble Qur’an\, 44:3-4] \nHowever\, most scholars agree that this ayah refers to Laylat al-Qadr. The opinion that 15th Sha’ban is ‘the Night of Destiny’ – i.e. the night on which your provision and time of death is named – is not strong. And Allah knows best. \nWhether mentioned in the Qur’an or not\, it is still a blessed night. Umar bin Abd al-Aziz (rh) and others have said\, ′Do not neglect four nights in the year\, because on those nights Allah pours His mercy upon His slaves: the first night of Rajab\, the fifteenth night of Sha’ban\, the night before Eid al-Fitr and the night before Eid al-Adha’. \nThus\, we should try to increase our ’ibadah and ask for Allah’s mercy and forgiveness on this night. We should also strive to remove from our hearts any hatred or grudges for our fellow Muslims to receive Allah’s forgiveness on this night. \nRemember: Sha’ban is the month in which our annual deeds are raised to Allah – and the night of the 15th Sha’ban is the perfect opportunity to enter Ramadan with our sins forgiven\, in that Allah! \nPreparing for Ramadan\nSha’ban is a special month\, and we shouldn’t neglect its blessings. It is a time when our actions are raised to Allah\, where our love for the Prophet (saw) increases\, and where we should prepare for the blessed month of Ramadan. \nSource: https://muslimhands.org.uk/latest/2019/04/the-importance-of-15th-shaban-night \nThe blessed Sha’ban is a month loved and honored by our Prophet ﷺ. Usamah ibn Zayd\, may Allah be pleased with him\, asked\, “Ya Rasulallah\, I haven’t seen you [voluntarily] fast in a month as much as you fast during Sha’ban.” The Messenger ﷺ replied\, “People neglect that month between Rajab and Ramadan. It is a month in which deeds are raised to the Lord of the Worlds\, and I like that my deeds be raised while I am fasting.” (Ahmad and Nasa’i) \nIt has been narrated that the Messenger of Allah\, blessings and peace be upon him\, said: “There are five nights on which dua is not rejected: the first night of Rajab\, the fifteenth night of Sha‘ban\, Thursday night\, the night before Eid al Fitr and the night before Eid al Nahr (al Adha).” (al Suyuti) \nFor more information\, see the following links: \n– https://seekersguidance.org/tag/15th-shaban\n– https://muwasala.org/2015/05/17/merits-of-shaban \nAbout Qari Amar: \nRaised in Morocco\, Qari Amar Bellaha memorized the Qur’an at 17 from Madrasat Imam Nafia. He has ijaza for the Hafs and Warsh forms of Qur’anic recitation. In 1994 and 1995\, he was awarded top prizes in the National Moroccan Tajweed competition. He is recognized for his recitation’s beauty\, clarity\, and excellence and is one of the Bay area’s foremost Qur’an teachers. \n \nIn his Majmu’\, Imam Nawawi quoted from Imam al Shafi’i’s Kitab al-Umm that there are 5 nights when du’as (supplications) are answered\, one of them being the night of the 15th of Sha`ban.

This recognition enlightens us and deepens our knowledge of his teachings. \n\n– Past mawlid celebrations at MCC: http://mcceastbay.org/mawlid\n\nAbout the Book\, “The Kingdom of the Heart”\n“Within every human being is a Kingdom. The heart is the ruler of this Kingdom\, and the rest of the body are its subjects. If the heart rules with justice and excellence\, the body will perform good actions\, and the Kingdom will flourish. If\, however\, the heart neglects its duties\, the body will disobey Allah s and the entire Kingdom will suffer the consequences. Allah ﷻ made this Kingdom so crucial that through it the eternal and everlasting dominion of the next life is either gained or lost.” The Kingdom of the Heart by Habib ‘Umar Bin Hafiz gives the reader a deeper understanding of the importance of cultivating the spiritual kingdom of the heart. Readers will gain a deeper appreciation into how outward actions have spiritual consequences. Some of the topics covered are: • The Tongue & Its Effects • Looking at Creation with Love & Mercy • The Impact of Shaking Hands • Attending to the Ending of Our Lives • The Impact of Intention This book uniquely shows the direct correlation between outward actions and the heart\, giving us insights into how various actions impact the state of our hearts. Ultimately\, it gives us a way to internalize the wisdom and purpose of acts of devotion\, resulting in the purification of the heart and nearness to Allah ﷻ. \nAbout the Author\nHabib Umar bin Hafiz (Arabic: حبيب عمر بن حفيظ\, romanized: Ḥabīb ʿUmar bin Ḥafīẓ; Arabic pronunciation: [ħabiːb ʕumar bin ħafiːðˤ]; born 27 May 1963) is a Yemeni Sunni and Sufi Islamic scholar\, teacher\, and founder and dean of Dar al-Mustafa Islamic seminary.[3] He is also a Supreme Advisory Council member for the Tabah Foundation in Abu Dhabi. \nUstadh Tariq Samady\nUstadh Tariq Samady is a native of the Bay Area with roots hailing from the ancient city of Kabul. He is a lifelong seeker of Islamic knowledge\, learning from a wide range of Muslim scholars – local and international. With blessings from his teachers\, he has contributed to various educational programs and gatherings of dhikr. \nHis research and editing interests span Qur’an and Hadith commentaries\, Philology\, Spirituality\, and Persian Poetry. Tariq is the founder of Circles of Light (حلق النور)\, a fledgling educational initiative focused on sharing sacred learnings and wisdom for the benefit of the community. He studied Computer Science at California State University – East Bay and has over ten years of experience as a Developer and Analytics QA Engineer. \nAbout Circles of Light\nCircles of Light is a fledgling educational initiative focused on sharing sacred learnings and wisdom for the benefit of the community\, meant to assist in maximizing Dunya (this life) for our Deen (Faith). He gives wisdom to whomever He wills. Whoever is given wisdom has been given much good. But none pays heed except those with insight. (Quran). We are motivated by the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); the most beloved people to Allah are those most beneficial to the people. (Hadith). We seek to achieve this aim through our in-person educational programs and publications. \nAlmighty Allah ﷻ directs us in Sūratul Aḥzāb\, “Verily\, Allah and His Angels send blessings on the Messenger of Allah. You who believe invoke blessings on him and salute him with a worthy salutation.” Our purpose of invoking blessings upon the Beloved ﷺ leads to proximity to Almighty Allah ﷻ by obeying this command while simultaneously fulfilling our rights upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. It is crystal clear how vital the invocation of Ṣalawāt is for the believer\, and it is a Mercy of Almighty Allah ﷻ for its rewards to be multitudinous. Abundant Ṣalawāt upon the Beloved ﷺ leads to loving him and knowing his beautiful qualities. By that virtue\, degrees of purity are realized. From the signs of the people of the Sunnah is sending Ṣalawāt upon him\, for the key to all goodness is Ṣalawāt upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. \n\n– More Sidi Tariq Samady: http://mcceastbay.org/tariq\n– More Tri-Valley and East Bay Mawlid celebrations: https://mcceastbay.org/mawlid\n– More about celebrating the Prophet (peace be upon him)’s day of birth: https://seekersguidance.org/answers/general-counsel/innovation-bida-and-celebrating-the-prophets-birthday-mawlid\n– More sessions about “The Kingdom of the Heart”: http://mcceastbay.org/kingdom

SUMMARY:Report Back from Palestine | Reverend Michael Yoshii
DESCRIPTION:Reverend Michael Yoshii and four others from the U.S. recently returned from a weeklong stay in Wadi Foquin\, a small village in the West Bank rapidly being filled in by surrounding illegal Israeli settlements. \nThe brief presence of Americans inside Palestinian families slackened ongoing nighttime IDF raids\, demolition of homes\, settler harassment\, and the looming threat of land confiscation to build an apartheid road. \n6 p.m. to 7 p.m. | Monday\, February 17 (President’s Day) | MCC Conference Room | Join in person or watch virtually at mcceastbay.org/live \nSponsored by Asbury United Methodist Church\, Jewish Voices for Peace Bay Area\, Friends of Wadi Foquin\, Mount Diablo Peace and Justice Center\, Soul of My Soul Exhibit & MCC East Bay. \n\n– More talks about Palestine: http://mcceastbay.org/palestinian\n\nRightfully so\, our attention has been on the genocide in Gaza. Learn also about the current climate in the West Bank\, which remains under attack. \nReverend Michael Yoshii is a retired United Methodist minister and co-chair of the Friends of Wadi Foquin\, an official committee of the United Methodist Church. He will present a report on a recent Protective Presence trip to the West Bank Muslim village of Wadi Foquin.  \nAbout the Speaker\nReverend Michael Yoshii is a retired pastor of 30 years at Buena Vista United Methodist Church. He understands the profound impact of such injustices from the firsthand experiences of his former congregation and his parents. This historical and generational trauma\, in part\, fuels Yoshii’s solidarity within his community as well as with other marginalized groups\, most notably for him\, Palestinians facing apartheid. \nFriends of Wadi Foquin was created in 2009 with a small amount of fundraising to build beehives in the village. This helped offset the significant damage inflicted on agricultural life by nearby Israeli settlements\, whose roads are prohibited to Palestinians. Through projects like reclaiming a dilapidated building for a community center or building a soccer field on Palestinian land threatened by the occupation\, Friends of Wadi Foquin sent a powerful message that life and dignity will not be denied. This powerful alliance reminds us that the movement for justice anywhere reinforces the struggle for justice everywhere. \nYoshii spoke about the first time he visited Palestine in 2006: “The thing is you’re there in person and physically\, viscerally\, your body is experiencing the occupation and you’re in the presence of other people who are trying to tell their stories. And the couple of things that hit me\, I think that were very central to my identity as a Japanese American. The first thing was about people sharing their stories and their history. I mean\, history is essentially being censored\, particularly when we went on some of our exposure trips and met people from the North and heard their stories of their families and villages\, which are being basically dismantled and demolished\, people are losing their homes. There’s a resonance for me as a Japanese American because we went through the same struggle. I can’t say it’s anything in comparison to Palestinians\, but the similar thread is that we went through the struggle of needing to tell our story too.” Source

SUMMARY:"Almost Sunset" Author's Event for Muslim Children with Graphic Novelist Wahab Algarmi
DESCRIPTION:Join us with the author of Almost Sunset to hear the story of a young Muslim American boy during Ramadan as he finds the balance between his family traditions and his secular middle school life. \n3 p.m. to 4 p.m. (immediately after the 2:30 p.m. Jumu’ah ends) | MCC Conference Room | Join us in person or watch virtually at mcceastbay.org/live \nAlmost Sunset follows a young Muslim American boy during Ramadan as he finds the balance between his family traditions and his secular middle school life. \nSponsored by Towne Center Books Pleasanton & MCC East Bay. \nWe are excited to host author of Almost Sunset Wahab Algarmi in conversation with author of Raised by Ghosts\, Briana Loewinsohn on Thursday\, February 20th at 4 pm (Pleasanton location\, 555 Main St).  Join us for a lively discussion about their books and how they became authors/artists. \nIn a contemporary middle grade graphic novel debut that Gene Luen Yang calls “funny\, endearing\, and an intimate look at a Muslim family\,” Almost Sunset follows a young Muslim American boy during Ramadan as he finds the balance between his family traditions and his secular middle school life. Perfect for fans of Swim Team and Chunky. \nWahab Algarmi is a writer and comic artist. He has been creating comics and a community space for other artists in the San Francisco Bay Area for years. Some of his past comic work includes The Society of Unordinary Young Ladies. \nSet in the author’s own teenage years\, Raised By Ghosts begins in 1991 with semi-autobiographical Briana in middle school. Classes are a bummer\, but lunches are worse; either spent alone\, or being teased. Traditionally a good student\, Briana is not doing well in her academics\, but keeps it a secret. Her parents (divorced) are a mess\, and largely absent. She spends a lot of time by herself. By high school\, she makes friends\, and those connections are her only source of happiness as they help each other navigate adolescence. But life at home with each parent remains fraught. When her relationships at school begin to falter\, she has no one to turn to\, forcing Briana to grapple with her sense of self-worth\, her longing for belonging\, and her desire for authenticity in her relationships. \nBriana Loewinsohn is a cartoonist living in Oakland\, CA. These days she teaches high school art and draws comic books. If she doesn’t text you back\, she is probably gardening. \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org

SUMMARY:*Virtual Only* Ramadan Game Plan: A Seminar on Preparing the Heart\, Mind\, and Soul | Sidi Shahryar Abbasi

SUMMARY:Skygazing for Ramadan Moon
DESCRIPTION:Revive the Sunnah to go outside and look for the new crescent moon in the evening sky that will mark the beginning of Ramadan. \n\n\n\nJoin us in the MCC parking lot after Maghrib sunset prayers (6:04 p.m.) on Friday\, February 28\, and join in the excitement when the young crescent moon (hilal) ushers in the Holy Month of Ramadan. The Tri-Valley Stargazers will be in the parking lot (weather permitting) with high-visibility telescopes\, allowing us to peer into the night sky at 6 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n523 Southern Halal BBQ food truck will sell dinners\, and Habibi’s Falooda provide dessert from 5 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. \n\n\n\nMCC adheres to the traditional principle that Islamic lunar months begin and end based on confirmed\, verified naked-eye sightings of the new crescent moon globally. MCC will confirm the start of Ramadan on the evening of February 28 in its newsletter (subscribe at https://mcceastbay.org/newsletter). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n– If the moon is sighted (likely)\, the first night of Taraweeh will be after Isha (8 p.m.) on Friday\, February 28\, 2025\, and the first day of fasting will be Saturday\, March 1\, 2025.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n– If the moon is not sighted (unlikely)\, the first night of Taraweeh will be after Isha (8 p.m.) on Saturday\, March 1\, 2025\, and the first day of fasting will be Sunday\, March 2\, 2025.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe MCC website (mcceastbay.org) and the MCC’s automated phone menu (925-485-1786) will announce the start of Ramadan by about 7:15 p.m. on Friday\, February 28. \n\n\n\nSince sunset will be at 6:04\, we will likely be able to see the new moon by about 6:35 p.m. \n\n\n\nMCC observes the beginning and end of lunar months following the sighting of the crescent moon. Please watch this video to explain. \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \n\n\n\nThe du’a to recite if the crescent is sighted: \n\n\n\nاللَّهُمَّ أَهِلَّهُ عَلَيْنَا بِالأَمْنِ وَالإِيمَانِ، والسَّلامَةِ والإِسْلامِ، وَالتَّوْفِيقِ لِمَا تُحِبُّ وَتَرْضَى، رَبُّنَا وَرَبُّكَ اللهُ \n\n\n\nAllaahumma ahillahu ‛alaynaa bil-amni wal-eemaani\, was-salaamati wal-islaami\, wat-tawfeeqi limaa tuḥibbu watarḍaa\, rabunaa wa rabbuk-allaahu- \n\n\n \nO Allah\, let the crescent loom above us in peace and faith\, safety and Islam\, and in agreement with all that You love and pleases You. Our Lord and your Lord is Allah. \n\n\n \n(Source: Sunan Al- Tirmidhi) \n\n\n\nQari Amar Bellaha will also be in the Hayward Hills this Wednesday evening to see the crescent moon. If sighted\, he will read the special dua from high atop the hills and head down to lead the Taraweeh prayers on Wednesday at 9 p.m. He will be live streaming his moonsighting atop the Hayward Hills at https://mcceastbay.org/live \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n

She is passionate about empowering women in their childbearing years to gain closeness to their Lord through her spiritual birth consultations and virtual doula services. \nUstadha Shamira is a co-founder of the Rahmah Foundation and currently teaches for Nur al-Iman\, a full-time girls’ shariah program with Ustadha Mona Elzankaly based in the Bay Area. \nUstadha Dr. Rania Awaad\nShaykah Dr. Rania Awaad M.D. is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Stanford University School of Medicine\, where she is the Director of the Stanford Muslim Mental Health & Islamic Psychology Lab as well as Stanford University’s Affiliate Chaplain and Affiliate Professor of Islamic Studies.
