SUMMARY:Miraaj Academy Tables @ MCC Jumu'ahs
DESCRIPTION:Shaykh Hamzah Abdul-Malik founded Miraaj Academy in 2017. Learn about how you can support their work to help provide scholarships for zakat-eligible Imams in training. \nA Dream Deferred: Transforming Young Lives Today\nFounded in 2017\, our academy is the realization of Imam Hamzah Abdul-Malik’s dream that began over two decades ago. Our founder\, a young teenager at the time\, aspired to win the Moroccan Qur’an recitation competition and use the prize – acres of land – to establish a Qur’an school for young American Muslims. Years later\, while reciting Qur’an at Muhammad Ali’s memorial\, Imam Hamzah Abdul-Malik was inspired to create a leadership academy where young Muslim boys could learn to apply the teachings of the Qur’an in their lives.  Miraaj Academy is committed to nurturing the hearts and minds of young Muslims\, providing them with the tools they need to succeed in all aspects of their lives Insha Allah. \nOur Mission\nAt Miraaj Academy\, we are committed to nurturing and guiding the next generation of young Muslims to become the torchbearers of their faith\, future scholars\, and leaders in their communities Insha Allah. As a dedicated institution to Islamic education in America\, we embrace the weighty yet fulfilling task of fostering an environment that instills deep-rooted traditional Islamic values and teaches student how to put their faith into practice through serving their community. \nInspired by Prophet Muhammad’s (SA) spiritual journey\, our mission is to seamlessly blend Islamic teachings with academic excellence\, guiding our youth towards virtuous\, knowledgeable\, and responsible adulthood. Through our holistic approach\, rooted in the fusion of Eastern and Western educational philosophies\, we foster growth and excellence in our students\, emphasizing mastery\, understanding\, teaching\, and implementation of essential sciences and skills. \nOur Vision\nOur vision at Miraaj Academy is to be recognized as a premier educational institution that embodies excellence in Islamic education and academic achievement. We aspire to cultivate a dynamic learning environment where students are inspired to explore their faith\, engage with diverse perspectives\, and pursue intellectual curiosity. \nGuided by the principles of Prophet Muhammad’s spiritual journey\, we envision a future where our graduates emerge as compassionate leaders\, empowered with the knowledge\, skills\, and moral fortitude to positively impact their communities and contribute to the betterment of society InSha Allah.

DESCRIPTION:Join us as we examine the history of philosophy “without any gaps” and explore the ideas\, lives\, and historical context of the major philosophers and lesser-known figures of the tradition. \n7 p.m. to 9 p.m. | Friday\, June 13 | MCC Conference Room | Join in person or watch virtually at mcceastbay.org/live \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \nAbout the Speaker: \nBhawana Mishra was born and raised in the Bay Area and attended college and graduate school. Her master’s thesis was “Toward a Single-Consciousness: Challenging ‘un-American-ness’ of People of Color.” She is most interested in political and legal philosophy\, particularly ideas around race\, social justice\, and equity. \nBhawana Mishra started teaching at Evergreen Valley College in 2011. She believes that Philosophy is something one should not simply learn\, but something one should learn to DO because philosophy and ideas can change oneself and the world! Her greatest hope is that students discover their ideas about some of the biggest questions and are willing to evolve. Outside work\, she loves being outdoors\, traveling\, doing logic and math puzzles\, reading\, and watching British period dramas. She is married to her best friend\, with whom she has two children. \nIslamic philosophy is a field of study that examines philosophical concepts and inquiries within the context of Islamic tradition and thought\, often seeking to reconcile faith and reason. It explores fundamental questions about existence\, knowledge\, morality\, and the divine\, drawing from the Quran\, Islamic teachings\, and various philosophical traditions\, including Greek philosophy.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKey Aspects of Islamic Philosophy:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReconciliation of Faith and Reason:\n\nA core aim of Islamic philosophy is to harmonize religious beliefs with rational inquiry\, exploring the relationship between revelation and reason.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInfluence of Greek Philosophy:\n\nIslamic philosophers\, particularly in the early Islamic Golden Age\, engaged with and adapted Greek philosophical concepts\, including Aristotelianism and Neoplatonism.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMajor Themes and Schools:\n\nIslamic philosophy encompasses a wide range of themes\, including metaphysics\, epistemology\, ethics\, and theology\, and has seen the emergence of various schools of thought\, such as Falsafa (using Aristotelian and Neoplatonic frameworks) and Kalam (dealing with theological debates).  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNotable Thinkers:\n\nKey figures in Islamic philosophy include Al-Kindi\, Al-Farabi\, Ibn Sina (Avicenna)\, Ibn Rushd (Averroes)\, Al-Ghazali\, Ibn Khaldun\, and others who have made significant contributions to philosophical discourse.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImpact and Legacy:\n\nIslamic philosophy has influenced various intellectual traditions\, including medieval scholasticism and modern European philosophy\, leaving a lasting impact on the development of philosophical thought.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn essence\, Islamic philosophy represents a unique intellectual endeavor that blends Islamic beliefs and practices with philosophical inquiry\, exploring the nature of reality\, knowledge\, and the divine through a lens informed by both faith and reason.

Generally considered a moderately challenging route. This is a very popular area for fishing\, hiking\, and horseback riding\, so you’ll likely encounter other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. \nThis is a beautiful hiking area with both paved and dirt trails that are moderately steep and lovely views of the water. If desired\, you can avoid a large portion of the paved East Shore Trail by taking the southern Cameron Loop after crossing the Honker Bay bridge\, Ten Hills Trail\, and Indian Cove Trail\, leaving a very short paved section to the Marina. \nAccessibility: \nAccording to Access Northern California (https://accessnca.org/access-northern-california/explore/explore-detail-view/?site_id=238): Lake Chabot is a popular destination for families and bustles on weekends. Among the many amenities you can find are multiple picnic areas\, a grassy play area\, fishing\, an outdoor fitness zone with interactive exercise machines (one is designed for wheelchair access)\, and miles of lakefront trails. The Marina has a café\, tackle and bait shop\, rental boats\, and seasonal lake tours aboard the tour boat “Chabot Queen.” The ramp to the boats is accessible but quite steep. To board the tour boat\, a portable ramp is available. The paved West Shore and East Shore trails around the lake offer some access\, although their steep terrain may deter some with limited mobility. They are worth the effort if possible because it feels as though you’re far from the nearby bustling cities. Although paved\, the West Shore Trail has numerous steep grades throughout as it travels high above the lake\, passing in and out of shade provided by oaks\, bay laurel\, willow\, and cottonwood trees. Poison oak is plentiful\, as well as vetch\, blackberries\, and blue-eyed grass. A few interpretive panels about the dam’s history are towards the end of this 2-mile route. Benches are scattered throughout\, although most have a steep grade to reach them.

Please see this video to understand this practice. MCC honors the variation at the beginning of each Islamic month based on the new moon being sighted on different days in different places\, and some communities do moon calculations. All are valid. Please observe with your community. \nThursday\, June 26th\, marks the first day of the Islamic month of Muharram\, the first month of the Islamic Calendar Year. It is considered special by all Muslims and is one of the four sacred months. During this month is the Day of Ashura\, or the “Tenth day” of the month\, which will be Saturday\, July 5th. Fasting is recommended (with or without the addition of a day before or after). Imam Muslim reported that the Prophet PBUH said\, “The best of fasts after the month of Ramadan are in the Month of Allah\, which you call Muharram. And the best of prayer after the obligatory prayer is the night prayer.” \nWhile Ashura is primarily associated with the story of Moses (peace be upon him)\, it is also the day on which another profound event occurred—the martyrdom of Hussein\, the beloved grandson of the Prophet (peace be upon him). May God be pleased with him. \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \nWhat is the Day of Ashura?\nAshura marks the day when Moses and the Israelites were saved from Pharaoh by God parting the Red Sea\, and is the Islamic equivalent to Yom Kippur. In Sunni Islam\, Ashura follows the traditions of Judaism with a day of fasting\, commemorating the parting of the Red Sea for Moses and his followers as they escaped Pharaoh. The Prophet Muhammad thought this tradition was worth following\, so he fasted and encouraged his followers to do the same. On this day\, Muslims fast and celebrate by reflecting\, showing respect\, and giving thanks. Is fasting required? Fasting is not compulsory during Ashura\, but some Muslims choose to fast for one or two days. This is because the Prophet Muhammad was said to have fasted on the day of Ashura. \nWhen is Ashura 2025?\nAshura falls on the tenth day of Muharram (the first month of the Islamic year) in the Muslim calendar\, which this year is Saturday\, July 5\, 2025. Islamic religious dates are tabular: they begin at sunset on the first evening and end at sunset on the second evening. The date changes each year because the calendar used by Muslims\, the Hijri calendar\, is 10 to 12 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar. Questions? events@mcceastbay.org \n\n– More talks & sermons on Muharram: https://mcceastbay.org/muharram\n\nThe month of Muharram is considered special by all Muslims and is one of the four sacred months of the year\, which brings with it the day of Ashura\, or the “Tenth day” of the month\, when fasting is recommended (with or without the addition of a day prior or after). Following the Prophetic tradition\, MCC invites all East Bay residents to observe a day of fasting on the day of Ashura. \nThe first is the Hijrah\, the migration of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD. The birth of a pluralistic Muslim community marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar and served as the key turning point for the first Muslims and the future of Islam. \nThe Hijrah also marks the start of a new chapter for humanity\, where freedom of faith and justice for all became the cardinal principles of the newly founded society and a model for us to aspire to. \nThe other two historical events took place on the 10th day of Muharram\, known as Ashura. After completing the migration to Medina\, the Prophet witnessed the Jews of Medina fasting to commemorate the victory of Prophet Musa (PBUH) and his people over the Egyptian Pharaoh. Prophet Muhammad then asked his companions to join this fasting tradition as a way to express their gratitude to Allah for saving Musa and his people. On the same day\, just six decades later\, the Prophet’s grandson Husayn ibn Ali was martyred in the Battle of Karbala. This was one of the saddest and most heartbreaking events in the history of Islam\, which we continue to mourn today. \nAs we commemorate Ashura\, for Prophet Musa and Imam Husayn\, we are called to re-commit to our struggle against all forms of tyranny and oppression and to seek liberty and justice for all. Following the Prophet Muhammad’s tradition\, MCC invites you all to observe the fast of Ashura. \nLet us take this day to continue the practice of our beloved Prophet and pray for the unity of our ummah (community). \n\n\nSeekers Guidance article: https://seekersguidance.org/articles/the-day-of-ashura/\nFor a quick read\, here are some infographics from SeekersGuidance: https://www.facebook.com/47051192317/posts/pfbid0S8QCwXfGGV6TcKLKQHEjNnRmDjLnWZqAd7XjQ1GNSqVSayyNMRJnidqTreYSzytpl/\n\nAbout Shaykh Talal \nShaykh Talal Ahdab holds licenses to teach the classical Islamic sciences. Some of his field specialties include Islamic theology\, epistemology\, language\, jurisprudence\, and legal theory. He has over twenty years of experience teaching a multitude of Islamic disciplines to scholars and professors. This day marks the beginning of the Hijrah (migration)\, when the Prophet (PBUH) travelled from Makkah to Madinah in 622 AD. \nAs we enter this blessed month\, with so much uncertainty and hardship around the world\, we are reminded that the Hijrah was more than a journey; it was a turning point for our Ummah. It is an invitation for all of us to reflect\, renew our intentions\, and recommit to living lives rooted in faith\, purpose\, and justice. \nWe ask Allah (SWT) to bring great good to the Ummah in this new year\, rectify its affairs\, and bring relief to those who are suffering. Peace and blessings be upon the one whose Hijrah marks the beginning of our calendar\, our Prophet Muhammad\, and his blessed family and Companions\, and all those that follow him until the last day.
