SUMMARY:Day Of Ashura Program & Community Iftar Dinner | Shaykh Talal Ahdab
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, June 26th\, marks the first day of the Islamic month of Muharram\, the first month of the Islamic Calendar Year. The blessed day of ‘Ashura is on Saturday\, July 5\, 2025. \nPlease calendar now to fast on the 10th of this month and either the day before or after (so the 9th or 11th of Muharram). The 10th of Muharram is likely to fall on Saturday\, July 5\, 2025. Therefore\, please fast either Friday and Saturday or Saturday and Sunday\, insha’Allah. MCC will host a community Iftar on Saturday\, July 5\, 2025. \n7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. | Saturday\, July 5 | $5/person for Iftar dinner | Registration required; RSVP at mcceastbay.org/fast-ashura | Watch the program virtually at mcceastbay.org/live \n\n– More talks & sermons on Muharram: https://mcceastbay.org/muharram\n– More Shaykh Talal: http://mcceastbay.org/talal\n– For more information about the Day of Ashura\, see https://seekersguidance.org/articles/the-day-of-ashura\n\nAshura Program\n\n6:30 p.m. – Asr prayer (Prayer Hall)\n7 p.m. – Program “Lessons From Ashura” begins with Sh. Talal Ahdab and Qari Amar Bellaha (Conference Room)\n8:36 p.m. – Maghrib prayer (Prayer Hall)\n8:50 p.m. – Iftar Dinner (women in Banquet Hall & men in Kindergarten classrooms – Please RSVP at mcceastbay.org/fast-ashura)\n10:15 p.m. – Isha prayer (Prayer Hall)\n\n– Dua for the Day of Ashura: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1eDyBp2nvN1W9nqnjrmpmsl2-UWuSRu-b/view?usp=drive_link \nMCC follows the traditional moon-sighting method\, which relies on regional\, verifiable naked-eye sightings of the new crescent moon to determine the start of all Hijri months. Please see this video to understand this practice. MCC honors the variation at the beginning of each Islamic month based on the new moon being sighted on different days in different places\, and some communities do moon calculations. All are valid. Please observe with your community. \nThursday\, June 26th\, marks the first day of the Islamic month of Muharram\, the first month of the Islamic Calendar Year. It is considered special by all Muslims and is one of the four sacred months. During this month is the Day of Ashura\, or the “Tenth day” of the month\, which will be Saturday\, July 5th. Fasting is recommended (with or without the addition of a day before or after). Imam Muslim reported that the Prophet PBUH said\, “The best of fasts after the month of Ramadan are in the Month of Allah\, which you call Muharram. And the best of prayer after the obligatory prayer is the night prayer.” \nWhile Ashura is primarily associated with the story of Moses (peace be upon him)\, it is also the day on which another profound event occurred—the martyrdom of Hussein\, the beloved grandson of the Prophet (peace be upon him). May God be pleased with him. \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \nWhat is the Day of Ashura?\nAshura marks the day when Moses and the Israelites were saved from Pharaoh by God parting the Red Sea\, and is the Islamic equivalent to Yom Kippur. In Sunni Islam\, Ashura follows the traditions of Judaism with a day of fasting\, commemorating the parting of the Red Sea for Moses and his followers as they escaped Pharaoh. The Prophet Muhammad thought this tradition was worth following\, so he fasted and encouraged his followers to do the same. On this day\, Muslims fast and celebrate by reflecting\, showing respect\, and giving thanks. Is fasting required? Fasting is not compulsory during Ashura\, but some Muslims choose to fast for one or two days. This is because the Prophet Muhammad was said to have fasted on the day of Ashura. \nWhen is Ashura 2025?\nAshura falls on the tenth day of Muharram (the first month of the Islamic year) in the Muslim calendar\, which this year is Saturday\, July 5\, 2025. Islamic religious dates are tabular: they begin at sunset on the first evening and end at sunset on the second evening. The date changes each year because the calendar used by Muslims\, the Hijri calendar\, is 10 to 12 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar. Questions? events@mcceastbay.org \n\n– More talks & sermons on Muharram: https://mcceastbay.org/muharram\n\nThe month of Muharram is considered special by all Muslims and is one of the four sacred months of the year\, which brings with it the day of Ashura\, or the “Tenth day” of the month\, when fasting is recommended (with or without the addition of a day prior or after). Following the Prophetic tradition\, MCC invites all East Bay residents to observe a day of fasting on the day of Ashura. \nThe first is the Hijrah\, the migration of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD. The birth of a pluralistic Muslim community marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar and served as the key turning point for the first Muslims and the future of Islam. \nThe Hijrah also marks the start of a new chapter for humanity\, where freedom of faith and justice for all became the cardinal principles of the newly founded society and a model for us to aspire to. \nThe other two historical events took place on the 10th day of Muharram\, known as Ashura. After completing the migration to Medina\, the Prophet witnessed the Jews of Medina fasting to commemorate the victory of Prophet Musa (PBUH) and his people over the Egyptian Pharaoh. Prophet Muhammad then asked his companions to join this fasting tradition as a way to express their gratitude to Allah for saving Musa and his people. On the same day\, just six decades later\, the Prophet’s grandson Husayn ibn Ali was martyred in the Battle of Karbala. This was one of the saddest and most heartbreaking events in the history of Islam\, which we continue to mourn today. \nAs we commemorate Ashura\, for Prophet Musa and Imam Husayn\, we are called to re-commit to our struggle against all forms of tyranny and oppression and to seek liberty and justice for all. Following the Prophet Muhammad’s tradition\, MCC invites you all to observe the fast of Ashura. \nLet us take this day to continue the practice of our beloved Prophet and pray for the unity of our ummah (community). \n\n\nSeekers Guidance article: https://seekersguidance.org/articles/the-day-of-ashura/\nFor a quick read\, here are some infographics from SeekersGuidance: https://www.facebook.com/47051192317/posts/pfbid0S8QCwXfGGV6TcKLKQHEjNnRmDjLnWZqAd7XjQ1GNSqVSayyNMRJnidqTreYSzytpl/\n\nAbout Shaykh Talal \nShaykh Talal Ahdab holds licenses to teach the classical Islamic sciences. Some of his field specialties include Islamic theology\, epistemology\, language\, jurisprudence\, and legal theory. He has over twenty years of experience teaching a multitude of Islamic disciplines to scholars and professors. Shaykh Talal’s long-term research interests include developing solutions to modern challenges through the purview of Islam’s expansive and dynamic scholarly tradition. At Zaytuna College\, Shaykh Talal has taught courses in Islamic jurisprudence\, legal theory\, and kalam theology. Shaykh Talal is fluent in Arabic. Shaykh Talal joined the Zaytuna College faculty in Fall 2017.  \n\n– More Sheikh Talal Ahdab: http://mcceastbay.org/talal\n\n\n \nToday is the first day of Muharram\, one of the four sacred months in the Islamic calendar\, as mentioned in the Quran\, marking the start of a new Islamic calendar year\, 1447. This day marks the beginning of the Hijrah (migration)\, when the Prophet (PBUH) travelled from Makkah to Madinah in 622 AD. \nAs we enter this blessed month\, with so much uncertainty and hardship around the world\, we are reminded that the Hijrah was more than a journey; it was a turning point for our Ummah. It is an invitation for all of us to reflect\, renew our intentions\, and recommit to living lives rooted in faith\, purpose\, and justice. \nWe ask Allah (SWT) to bring great good to the Ummah in this new year\, rectify its affairs\, and bring relief to those who are suffering. Peace and blessings be upon the one whose Hijrah marks the beginning of our calendar\, our Prophet Muhammad\, and his blessed family and Companions\, and all those that follow him until the last day.

SUMMARY:Author's Event: Fatima al-Samarqandi Female Muslim Hero From The 12th Century
DESCRIPTION:Inspire young Muslims to take pride in their history.  \nFatima al-Samarqandi is an inspiring story about a female Muslim hero from the 12th century\, a scholar\, jurist\, and advisor to a king. The book will be available for purchase after the author’s event. \n6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. | Friday\, July 11 | MCC Conference Room | Join us in person or watch virtually at mcceastbay.org/live \nAfter the event\, you can purchase the book “Fatima Al-Samarqandi: Inspiring Story of a Female Muslim Hero from the 12th Century” for $27. \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \nIn today’s world\, our children grow up reading about the stories of courage\, brilliance\, and leadership that shaped the world. But there is a gap. We do not have enough stories that reflect the rich legacy of Muslim heroes\, especially Muslim women. \nThis book bridges that gap by: \n\nIt presents an engaging and empowering story of the 12th-century female scholar Fatima Samarqandi\, with vibrant illustrations that bring 12th-century Samarkand to life.\n– The story instills pride in the rich tapestry of Islamic heritage \n\nAbout the Author:\nFarhatjahan Saiyed is a Homeschooling Mother\, Educator\, Entrepreneur\, and Environmentalist. She profoundly believes that empowering our children with the legacy of Muslim heroes is one of the best ways to nurture confidence in their Muslim identity. Sharing the stories of remarkable individuals who led successful and pious lives while uncovering the forgotten treasures of Islamic history inspires young minds to grow with purpose. As a parent and advocate for meaningful and mindful education\, she felt inspired to create a book that encourages children to explore\, question\, and celebrate their rich heritage with pride and curiosity. \nWhy This Book Matters:\nIn today’s world\, stories about historical figures like Fatima al-Samarqandi are largely untold. Most children grow up without learning about the inspiring contributions of Muslim scholars\, especially women\, in shaping history. \nThis book bridges that gap by:\n📖 Presenting a fun\, engaging\, and empowering story for children aged 7+.\n🎨 Featuring vibrant illustrations that bring 12th-century Samarkand to life.\n🌍 Inspiring coming generations by instilling pride in the rich tapestry of Islamic heritage and its commitment to learning. \n“Fatima al Samarqandi’s legacy doesn’t just benefit our daughters\, but also our sons at a time when confusion of roles and gender may create an inferiority complex. This book is more than just a story—it’s a tool to empower the next generation with the legacy of true character\, intellect\, resilience and light…” \n– Ustadha Shamira Chothia (Scholar\, Co-Founder- The Rahma Foundation\, Public Speaker) \n“In an age when many Muslim voices are being silenced\, it is important to have our voices heard and our narrative reclaimed. Sister Farhat is part of this vital endeavor by bringing to light the work and life of an important female contributor to Islam.”\n Ustadh Abu Ayyub Marulanda\nFounder\, In the Shade of the Minaret

Because of their ease and convenience\, we often make use of whatever is available without a second thought. Smartphones\, social media\, apps\, internet\, video games…If it’s new\, easier\, and faster\, it must be better\, right? Have we stopped to ask what are the benefits and harms of these devices? As we spend more and more time on screens\, what does this mean for us spiritually\, psychologically\, socially\, and even physically? Knowing the answers to these questions can help us make better choices. Digital Deceptions explains the proven harms behind those seemingly free and convenient devices and services\, and shows us a liberating\, practical\, and more balanced way to live\, worship\, and parent in this digital age using the timeless spiritual and rational principles of Islam. “…comprehensively addresses a critical need of our time.” Shaykh Riad Saloojee\, Al-Madina Institute Suhba Seminary \nAbout SageTree Foundation: \nSageTree Foundation is dedicated to reviving the light and wisdom of the prophets and sages to help seekers in the modern world navigate the confusion and darkness that have permeated all aspects of life. While the enemies of humanity are many\, the light is one. The Light of God is the source of light for His Final Messenger\, the prophets\, sages\, righteous\, and ultimately the source of light for all those who travel their path today.

Her passion for holistic education has driven her 20+ year career as a private and public school teacher\, turned parent homeschooler\, and education consultant to families (through Kinza Academy) and private schools\, such as Northstar\, Peace Terrace\, Garden of Knowledge\, and the Islamic School of Miami. Along with her certifications in Teaching English as a Second Language and Early Childhood Education\, her Master’s in Education\, with an emphasis on Curriculum and Instruction\, furthered her understanding of educational pedagogy and strengthened her resolve to work toward a more holistic approach to education. Shaheen Rasheed is an Instructional Designer for a technical training academy. She blogs and lectures about homeschooling\, parenting\, and alternative education. She is a founding member of the East Bay Muslim Homeschoolers group and an advisor to the Bay Area’s Silicon Valley Muslim Homeschoolers group. She has been published in various online and print magazines. She taught part-time at a local community college and taught many online classes. She strongly advocates changing the current education system to foster a holistic child through the revival of the traditional educational model. As an educational consultant\, she runs the website Soulful Studies: http://www.soulfulstudies.com  \nRooya Ayubi is a storyteller\, life coach\, wife\, and mother. An immigrant woman who walked across the desert from Afghanistan to Pakistan when she was only 6 years old\, Rooya is a survivor of trauma. Because of this\, Rooya grew up with a deep sense of unworthiness\, which led to a decade of depression. After embarking on a major self-healing journey\, she emerged strong and healthy. Her dream and mission now is to guide women who have felt beaten down by life’s challenges in reawakening hope\, reclaiming their power\, and beginning to live a life of honor. Her work combines a vast array of diverse skills\, including Powerful Non-Defensive Communication\, Storytelling\, Way of Joy Qigong\, contemplative breathing methods\, and Zhikr (remembrance)\, which focuses on the heart\, to help her clients make the necessary shift to embrace a life worth living. She has also been an administrator for the East Bay Muslim Homeschooling group for nearly a decade. She frequently hosts workshops titled “Chasing The Dunya Effect” and other seminars on self-worth. \nHana Khatib is a veteran homeschool educator and the creator of Pepper and Pine\, a widely loved platform dedicated to Waldorf-inspired homeschooling. Since 2015\, she has shared hundreds of videos and resources across YouTube\, Instagram\, and Facebook\, offering families insight\, inspiration\, and practical tools for homeschooling. \nHer journey began in 2003 with two young children and minimal resources. At the time\, homeschooling\, especially within the Waldorf tradition\, was a solitary path\, with few accessible materials and little community support. Determined to build a nurturing and creative educational environment for her growing family\, Hana spent years curating and adapting curriculum to fit her family’s evolving needs. \nWhat started as a personal project blossomed into a global community. Through Pepper and Pine\, Hana has connected with thousands of families\, offering transparency and encouragement through every season of homeschooling\, from early childhood to college preparation. \nToday\, she continues her mission by developing an original curriculum rooted in her decades of experience\, aiming to make homeschooling more beautiful\, accessible\, and fulfilling for others. Her work reflects a deep commitment to faith\, intentional living\, and empowering others on their educational journey.  \nUstadha Leila Fakira was born and raised in the US. Leila Fakira has lived most of her life in California. After an inspiring first trip to the Holy Lands\, Leila left her job as a Business Systems Analyst\, having spent more than 14 years in accounting\, to focus more intently on her Islamic Studies and be more involved in her children’s education.  Allah blessed her with a yearning to learn her deen\, and Allah granted her tawfeeq by guiding her to Zaytuna Institute\, where she studied Arabic\, Shafi’ Fiqh\, Shamail\, Seerah\, and more. \nLeila has a strong background in Shafi’i Fiqh and was encouraged to teach by Imam Zaid Shakir\, Dr. Rania Awad\, and Shaykh Yahya Rhodus after studying “Reliance of the Traveler\,“ “Fiqh Al-Ibaddat\,” and “Safinat Al-Nijah\,“ respectively. She also studied Rislat Al-Jamia’a with Shaykh Abdur Karim Yahya\, Abu Shuja with Imam Jamal Hysaw\, and other Shafi’i teachers\, male and female\, online. \nLeila studied and completed the Tajweed reading of the Qur’an several times with Ustadha Noha and Ustadha Aya from Egypt. Additionally\, she undertook her initial reading of the Qur’an with Ustadha Nawar Taleb-Agha and was subsequently permitted to teach basic Qur’an reading and basic tajweed. \nLeila has studied Arabic with Imam Zaid Shakir\, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus\, Ustadha Aya (from Egypt)\, and Ustadh Usama Canon\, Seerah & Shama’il with Shaykh Yahya Rhodus & Almaqasid\, and Tafsir and Inner Sciences with Imam Zaid Shakir\, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus\, and Habib Hussain (online).  She continues to study online with various teachers overseas to further her Arabic studies and explore the Inner Sciences. \n \nMuslim parents are increasingly turning to full-time Islamic schools or homeschooling as a haven for their children from public schools that are antagonistic to their values. As waitlists grow at Islamic schools\, frustrated parents are unsure of what to do next. \nWhat is Homeschooling?\nHomeschooling is an educational approach where parents or guardians choose to educate their children at home instead of sending them to a traditional public or private school. It involves providing a comprehensive education to children within the comfort of their own homes. \nIn homeschooling\, parents typically take on the role of primary educators. They develop or choose a curriculum\, create lesson plans\, and teach the material to their children. Parents can also choose to outsource the teaching to qualified tutors and resources to help with teaching their children. Homeschooling can be tailored to meet every child’s unique needs\, interests\, and learning styles. \nWhy Homeschool?\nThe reasons for homeschooling vary from family to family. Some common motivations include a desire for religious or moral education\, a more personalized approach to teaching\, concerns about the school environment or curriculum\, the child’s unique needs\, the family’s financial situation\, or the need for flexibility in scheduling. \nIs Homeschooling legal?\nThe legality of homeschooling depends on the country and sometimes the specific region within a country. Laws and regulations regarding homeschooling can vary significantly. \nIn many countries\, homeschooling is legal and recognized as a legitimate educational option. Some countries have specific homeschooling laws that outline the requirements and procedures parents must follow. These laws may include provisions such as mandatory notifications to educational authorities\, periodic assessments\, curriculum standards\, or teacher qualifications. \nIt is crucial for parents considering homeschooling to research the laws and regulations in their specific country\, state\, or region to ensure compliance with local requirements. Local homeschooling organizations\, support groups\, or Education consultants\, such as Soulful Studies\, can provide valuable information and guidance regarding the legal aspects of homeschooling in a particular area.
