SUMMARY:Quarterly Red Cross Blood Drive @ MCC Jumu’ahs
DESCRIPTION:As people of faith\, it is in our blood to help. With a 15-minute blood donation\, you can be part of a lifesaving journey that could save up to three lives. \n\n\n\nThe MCC community has saved nearly 375 lives! This is our 30th blood drive during Jumu’ah\, and each has always been fully booked! \n\n\n\nLet’s continue that trajectory at this blood drive and keep all our American Red Cross guests busy when they set up in our Banquet Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on three Fridays in 2025. Sign up at: HTTP://mcceastbay.org/blood-drive \nHere are the Jumu’ah Friday prayer service times: HTTP://mcceastbay.org/prayer \n\n\n\nIn 2025\, MCC will proudly host these quarterly blood drives during Jumuah services from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with our friends at the American Red Cross: \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday\, February 21\, 2025 (Stanford Blood Center)\nFriday\, May 23\, 2025 (American Red Cross)\nFriday\, September 26\, 2025 (American Red Cross)\nFriday\, December 5\, 2025 (American Red Cross)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Power Red donation targets O-\, O+\, A-\, and B—only. It takes 20-30 minutes because donors give two units of concentrated Red Blood Cells\, and platelets and plasma are returned. Blood diversity is essential. Now more than ever\, the American Red Cross needs the help of black blood donors. \n\n\n\nBlood donors report feeling a sense of great satisfaction after making their blood donation. Why? Because helping others in need feels good. \n\n\n\nIf you have visited India\, Pakistan\, or another high-risk malaria country and returned within the last 12 months\, you are not eligible to donate blood. See the latest travel-related restrictions to blood donation eligibility. \n\n\n\nEvery person who donates blood at MCC will receive a voucher for a free meal at iniBurger—Gourmet Burgers in Pleasanton. MCC congregation members Leeza and Abdullah Popal\, who own these establishments\, generously donate these vouchers to encourage community and congregation participation. \n\n\n\nMCC Youth: If you are 16 to 18\, here are the donor requirements and parental authorization form link. \n\n\n\nOn the morning of the blood drive\, please complete the Rapid Pass online and bring the print-off to speed up the check-in process. Complete at https://mcceastbay.org/rapid

SUMMARY:American Muslims: A History Revealed (Untold Stories of Muslims in USA)
DESCRIPTION:The history of the United States is far more complex and storied than commonly understood or conveyed in standard U.S. History textbooks or courses of study. Often overlooked in most renderings of U.S. history are the histories of Muslims in America. American Muslims: A History Revealed addresses that knowledge gap by exploring significant moments in U.S. history through the lived experiences of American Muslims as told through archival sources\, historic sites\, and scholarly research. \n7 p.m. to 9 p.m. | Friday\, May 23 | MCC Conference Room | Join in person or watch virtually at mcceastbay.org/live \nAdnan Dawood\, a longtime MCC congregation member\, will moderate the discussion. We will watch two episodes of this PBS series in the community: Little Mosque on the Prairie and How Islam Influenced Black Americans in 1920s Chicago. \nAs the Muslim holy month of Ramadan ends\, we’re excited to share American Muslims: A History Revealed\, a powerful PBS series that uncovers 200 years of Muslim American history. From enslaved African Muslims to pioneering\, diverse immigrant communities\, this series offers vital stories perfect for reflection. It is hosted by Amna Nawaz from PBS. \nThis PBS series moves beyond inclusion by exploring the histories of Muslims whose lives have been well documented in the archives. Rather than attempting to fit Muslim stories into an already established American historical narrative\, the series seeks to expand the frame of that narrative to reveal that America has always been much more than any singular\, narrow story about it. Further\, the stories here are not intended to be a chronicle of accomplishments or contributions\, of what Muslims have “given” to America\, but how Muslims as Americans have transformed America as much as they have been transformed. These are not just stories of how Muslims become American\, but of America’s becoming\, an ongoing process that includes everyone\, not just American Muslims. The episodes in this series thus offer a way to expand\, deepen\, pluralize\, and complicate commonly held ideas about the stories of Muslims in America\, and more significantly\, of America itself. \n\n– Watch the entire series at https://maestro.tv/picturemotion/american-muslims\n– Discussion guide: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JxwrZ7taljwW4ej4Flf8VVs7EZ6nvJNA/view\n\nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org

Generally considered a moderately challenging route\, it takes an average of 3 h 41 min to complete. This is a very popular area for hiking and running\, so you’ll likely encounter other people while exploring. The best times to visit this trail are January through April. \nPark Features: Deep in a valley framed by oak-covered hills\, with sailboats and sailboards skimming over its waters\, Del Valle is like a lakeside resort only 10 miles south of Livermore. 5\,000 acre Del Valle Regional Park features two swim beaches\, a boat launch\, family and group camping (by reservation) and excellent\, stocked fishing.  \nTrail Highlights: This hike around the northern part of the lake is removed from the busy swim beaches in the southern part of the lake; enjoy the wilderness feel and explore a part of Del Valle you may not have seen before. The contrast in scenery from the ridge of East Shore Trail and the lakeside Heron Bay Trail provides a diverse recreational experience. This hike features several steep climbs and descents and is recommended for those with a good level of fitness. There is a drinking fountain but no restrooms at the trailhead. Be sure to carry plenty of water on your hike.

The Qur’an also reminds us: “Remember Allah during the appointed days.” \nIn the hadith\, we find The Prophet ﷺ mention: “There are no days greater and more beloved to Allah than these ten days of Dhul Hijjah\, so increase in them your declaration of the oneness of Allah (tahleel)\, your exaltation of him (takbeer)\, and your praise of Him (tahmeed).” \nThe scholars remind us to spend these sacred days by increasing in worship\, specifically: \n\nFast for the first 9 days\, or at least on Day of ‘Arafah (9th of Dhul-Hijjah) — which is on Friday\, July 8.\nIncrease in your recitation of the Qur’an – at least Surah Yaseen after Fajr\, Surah Waqi’ah & Mulk anytime after Maghrib.\nIncrease in Sadaqah — aim to give a small amount every day.\nIncrease in supererogatory (nawafil) prayers — maintain all your sunnah prayers & aim to wake for tahajjud.\nIncrease in Istighfar (seeking forgiveness) — aim for 100X a day.\nReach out to your relatives\, forgive & forget the past.\nSignificantly increase your Salawaat upon the Prophet (ﷺ) — aim for 100X a day.\n\nMake Du’a and talk to Allah as much as you can. \nJazakAllah Khayr\nImam Tahir Anwar

So\, don’t miss the reward of fasting it\, and join the community iftars at Masjid Annoor and the Qur’an Center on that day. \n\n\n\nAlso\, increase your dhikr\, recitation of the Qur’an\, good deeds\, and duas before the morning of Eid. Don’t forget to include in your duaas your family\, friends\, relatives\, neighbors\, MCC community\, and the wider Ummah\, and make a special dua for our brothers in Gaza/Palestine on this special day. \n\n\nhttps://youtu.be/Lx4aHJeOews?si=NvuEESL67dOF-Xsd\n\n\n  \n\n  \n\nThings to Do on the Day of Arafah\n\n\n\n1. Fasting on the Day of Arafah \nThe Day of Arafah fasting is highly encouraged and recommended for those not going on Hajj. \n\n\n\n “Fasting on the Day of Arafah expiates the sins of the past year and the coming year.” (Muslim) \n\n\n\n2. Du’aa of Arafah The Prophet Muhammad\, peace be upon him\, said of the Day of Arafah dua: \n\n\n\n “The most excellent dua is the dua on the Day of Arafah\, and the best of what I and the prophets before me have said is “There is nothing that deserves to be worshipped in truth except Allah; he is Alone and has no partner\, to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise\, and He is All-Powerful over all things.'” (Muwatta) \n\n لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له ، له الملك ، وله الحمد ، وهو على كل شيء قدير \n\n\n\n3. Making Tahleel\, Takbeer\, Tahmeed and Tasbeeh It is a Sunnah of our Prophet (PBUH) to recite the Tahleel\, Takbeer\, and Tahmeed as many times as possible on the day of Arafah and also on the days of Tashreeq (11th\, 12th\, and 13th of Dhul Hijjah). \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTahleel is to say “Laa ilaaha il-lal-laah”\nTakbeer is to say “Allahu Akbar”\nTahmeed is to say “Alhamdulillaah”\nTasbeeh is to say “Subhanallaah”\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n 4. Seek forgiveness from Almighty Allah The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: \n\n “On this day\, Allah\, the most Exalted\, descends to the nearest heaven\, and He is proud of His servants on the earth and says to those in heavens\, look at My servants\, they have come from far and near\, with hair dishevelled and faces covered with dust\, to seek my Mercy. Even if their sins are as much the sand or the froth of the sea\, I shall forgive them.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org

Some scholars may have viewed it as obligatory. However\, most see it as a voluntary (sunnah/mustahab) act. For those who wish to do Qurbani\, it is mustahab (or voluntary sunnah) to avoid cutting hair and nails until the Qurbani is slaughtered. However\, if you cut any hair or nails\, your Qurbani is accepted and does not affect the validity. \n\n\n\nDeeds of the Day of Arafah \n\n\n\nThe Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Fasting the day of Arafah expiates the sins of two years: the past one and the coming one.” (Muslim). The sighting of the moon determines the start and end of Ramadan and Eid. \nAccording to the regional moonsighting\, Eid Al Adha ’24 will be celebrated on Friday\, June 6. MCC follows the traditional moon-sighting method\, which relies on regional\, verifiable naked-eye sightings of the new crescent moon to determine the start of all Hijri months. Please see this video to understand this practice. MCC honors the variation at the beginning of each Islamic month based on the new moon being sighted on different days in different places\, and some communities do moon calculations. All are valid. Please observe with your community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMCC follows the traditional moon-sighting method\, which relies on regional\, verifiable naked-eye sightings of the new crescent moon to determine the start of all Hijri months. SUMMARY:Miraaj Academy Tables @ MCC Jumu'ahs
DESCRIPTION:Shaykh Hamzah Abdul-Malik founded Miraaj Academy in 2017. Learn about how you can support their work to help provide scholarships for zakat-eligible Imams in training. \nA Dream Deferred: Transforming Young Lives Today\nFounded in 2017\, our academy is the realization of Imam Hamzah Abdul-Malik’s dream that began over two decades ago. Our founder\, a young teenager at the time\, aspired to win the Moroccan Qur’an recitation competition and use the prize – acres of land – to establish a Qur’an school for young American Muslims. Years later\, while reciting Qur’an at Muhammad Ali’s memorial\, Imam Hamzah Abdul-Malik was inspired to create a leadership academy where young Muslim boys could learn to apply the teachings of the Qur’an in their lives.  Miraaj Academy is committed to nurturing the hearts and minds of young Muslims\, providing them with the tools they need to succeed in all aspects of their lives Insha Allah. \nOur Mission\nAt Miraaj Academy\, we are committed to nurturing and guiding the next generation of young Muslims to become the torchbearers of their faith\, future scholars\, and leaders in their communities Insha Allah. As a dedicated institution to Islamic education in America\, we embrace the weighty yet fulfilling task of fostering an environment that instills deep-rooted traditional Islamic values and teaches student how to put their faith into practice through serving their community. \nInspired by Prophet Muhammad’s (SA) spiritual journey\, our mission is to seamlessly blend Islamic teachings with academic excellence\, guiding our youth towards virtuous\, knowledgeable\, and responsible adulthood. Through our holistic approach\, rooted in the fusion of Eastern and Western educational philosophies\, we foster growth and excellence in our students\, emphasizing mastery\, understanding\, teaching\, and implementation of essential sciences and skills. \nOur Vision\nOur vision at Miraaj Academy is to be recognized as a premier educational institution that embodies excellence in Islamic education and academic achievement. We aspire to cultivate a dynamic learning environment where students are inspired to explore their faith\, engage with diverse perspectives\, and pursue intellectual curiosity. \nGuided by the principles of Prophet Muhammad’s spiritual journey\, we envision a future where our graduates emerge as compassionate leaders\, empowered with the knowledge\, skills\, and moral fortitude to positively impact their communities and contribute to the betterment of society InSha Allah.

SUMMARY:What is Islamic Philosophy? | Bhawana Mishra
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we examine the history of philosophy “without any gaps” and explore the ideas\, lives\, and historical context of the major philosophers and lesser-known figures of the tradition. \n7 p.m. to 9 p.m. | Friday\, June 13 | MCC Conference Room | Join in person or watch virtually at mcceastbay.org/live \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \nAbout the Speaker: \nBhawana Mishra was born and raised in the Bay Area and attended college and graduate school. Her master’s thesis was “Toward a Single-Consciousness: Challenging ‘un-American-ness’ of People of Color.” She is most interested in political and legal philosophy\, particularly ideas around race\, social justice\, and equity. \nBhawana Mishra started teaching at Evergreen Valley College in 2011. She believes that Philosophy is something one should not simply learn\, but something one should learn to DO because philosophy and ideas can change oneself and the world! Her greatest hope is that students discover their ideas about some of the biggest questions and are willing to evolve. Outside work\, she loves being outdoors\, traveling\, doing logic and math puzzles\, reading\, and watching British period dramas. She is married to her best friend\, with whom she has two children. \nIslamic philosophy is a field of study that examines philosophical concepts and inquiries within the context of Islamic tradition and thought\, often seeking to reconcile faith and reason. It explores fundamental questions about existence\, knowledge\, morality\, and the divine\, drawing from the Quran\, Islamic teachings\, and various philosophical traditions\, including Greek philosophy.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKey Aspects of Islamic Philosophy:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReconciliation of Faith and Reason:\n\nA core aim of Islamic philosophy is to harmonize religious beliefs with rational inquiry\, exploring the relationship between revelation and reason.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInfluence of Greek Philosophy:\n\nIslamic philosophers\, particularly in the early Islamic Golden Age\, engaged with and adapted Greek philosophical concepts\, including Aristotelianism and Neoplatonism.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMajor Themes and Schools:\n\nIslamic philosophy encompasses a wide range of themes\, including metaphysics\, epistemology\, ethics\, and theology\, and has seen the emergence of various schools of thought\, such as Falsafa (using Aristotelian and Neoplatonic frameworks) and Kalam (dealing with theological debates).  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNotable Thinkers:\n\nKey figures in Islamic philosophy include Al-Kindi\, Al-Farabi\, Ibn Sina (Avicenna)\, Ibn Rushd (Averroes)\, Al-Ghazali\, Ibn Khaldun\, and others who have made significant contributions to philosophical discourse.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImpact and Legacy:\n\nIslamic philosophy has influenced various intellectual traditions\, including medieval scholasticism and modern European philosophy\, leaving a lasting impact on the development of philosophical thought.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn essence\, Islamic philosophy represents a unique intellectual endeavor that blends Islamic beliefs and practices with philosophical inquiry\, exploring the nature of reality\, knowledge\, and the divine through a lens informed by both faith and reason.
