DESCRIPTION:For Elementary & Middle School Boys (Ages 8-13): Join us weekly in November for a Halaqa and hang-out session to help them make connections and bonds\, form a brotherhood\, and navigate school and social challenges as they grow into young men. \nThese sessions aim to craft our next generation of confident\, faithful Muslim men. These Halaqas are for only ages 8-13—no younger boys. The sessions are capped at 30 teens. He has also worked with the Yaqeen Institute on several projects\, including curriculum development. In addition to his extensive experience working with and mentoring Muslim youth\, he has completed Arabic studies at the Qasid Institute in Amman and studied Islamic sciences with traditional scholars based in Jordan and Turkey. \nSister Fouzia Alam\, a mother of three boys\, is collaborating to launch the Boys’ Halaqa. She has extensive experience and organized numerous Bay Area enrichment programs. \nAzmat Zeeshan Mukhtar is a local father and mentor from our community who enjoys sports and kids. He will organize the activities and bring on some other dads to help volunteer and make this a rewarding activity for our young Muslim boys. Brother Zeeshan Mukhtar has previously led similar sessions at his son’s school\, and in the past\, he coached flag football for boys at MCC.

DESCRIPTION:Stanford University Religious Studies Professor Rushain Abbasi will discuss his research on the relationship between “the rule of God” and current theories of human sovereignty. \n7 p.m. to 9 p.m. | Friday\, November 1\, 2024 | MCC Prayer Hall | Join us in person or virtually at mcceastbay.org/live \nThis presentation is based on Professor Abbasi’s treatise\, which studies the event of the Prophet Muhammad’s so-called conquest of Mecca and the Prophet’s general granting of amnesty to the “conquered” (placed in quotation marks because this group is referred to as the “released”) as a way of reflecting more broadly on the unique relationship between law and violence in Islam and the politics of “submission” (and not “sovereignty”) which made this moment in history possible. \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \nRushain Abbasi lives with his wife and two children in Hayward\, California. For his day job\, he teaches Islam\, philosophy\, and history classes in the Department of Religious Studies at Stanford University. He also teaches courses at Bay Area masjid on Islam and the West in the evenings. He is currently writing articles and books on secularism\, liberalism\, and its relationship to Islamic law\, the phenomenon of “Ummatic Amnesia\,” the uncanny presence of Islam in Western literature and history\, and the Hegelian differentiation of “abstraction” into its beautiful and evil forms. God willing\, the Opening of Mecca and the Closure of Violence is his first monograph\, which will be finished within the year.

He’s led advance care planning workshops for Muslims in mosques\, held talks on the Islamic perspective of end-of-life care in various settings\, including Al Balagh Academy\, and presented the Islamic bioethics on withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment at the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. His other projects include a study on the attitudes of Muslim chaplains on physician aid-in-dying and a review on Muslim and end-of-life care in non-Muslim majority nations. \nYaser Ali\, Esq\nIslamic Estate Planning Attorney \n\nYaser Ali is an estate planning attorney in Tempe\, Arizona\, specializing in personalized and efficient wealth transfer strategies.   Attorney Yaser holds a law degree from UC Berkeley\, a master’s degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education\, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida. An expert in Islamic estate planning\, Yaser is also the co-author of the American Bar Association’s Guide to Estate Planning for the Muslim Client and speaks frequently around the country to attorneys\, advisors\, and clients on how to incorporate religious preferences in the estate planning context.

He played sports on crutches for six years until he attended an elementary school specifically for children with disabilities\, where he received a leg made of wood and leather that didn’t bend\, which he had all through high school. At 20\, his athletic ability was completely redefined after receiving his first real running prosthetic.
