SUMMARY:Shaban: Preparing for Ramadan | Imam Zaid Shakir
DESCRIPTION:https://youtube.com/watch?v=VfLIh-HGTAo\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for an evening with Imam Zaid Shakir for spiritual and practical insights on what we can do now to honor the guest who comes just once a year and on what we can do this upcoming Ramadan for the maximum benefit of our Hereafter. \n\n\n\nAfter Isha (8 p.m.) – 9:30 p.m. | Friday\, Feb. 24 | MCC Prayer Hall | In-person only; recording will be posted later \n\n\n\n– More Imam Zaid: https://mcceastbay.org/zaid-shakir \n\n\n\n“Rajab is the month to sow the seeds. Sha’ban is the month to irrigate the crop\, and Ramadan is the month to reap the harvest.” – Imam Abu Bakr Al Warraq Al Balkhi (rahimahullah). \n\n\n\nQuestions? event@mcceastbay.org \n\n\n\nAbout Imam Zaid ShakirBorn in Berkeley\, California\, and raised in the Atlanta and Hartford projects alongside six other children\, Imam Zaid Shakir converted to Islam in 1977 and today is one of the foremost Islamic scholars in the West. \n\n\n\nHe found Islam while in the U.S. Air Force\, spending time reading and learning about various faiths and practices\, from Christianity to Transcendental meditation\, but says he chose Islam because of its social aspects: \n\n\n\n“Transcendental meditation gives you peace of mind…but it didn’t do anything for anybody else\, so I had to keep looking\,” Shakir explains at a recent lecture at a Brooklyn mosque. “I was literally searching for truth\, and I made various stops along the way\, and I found what I believed was the truth.” \n\n\n\nImam Zaid began his study in the United States\, earning a BA with honors in International Relations at American University and an MA in Political Science at Rutgers University\, but continued his education in the Middle East\, studying Arabic\, Islamic law\, Quranic studies\, and spirituality at Syria’s prestigious Abu Noor University. Yet he returned to the United States seven years later\, settling in Connecticut\, co-founding Masjid al-Islam\, serving as Imam\, the Tri-State Muslim Education Initiative\, and the Connecticut Muslim Coordinating Committee. \n\n\n\n“You have an American Muslim culture emerging\, which is very important because then you can get a unique understanding of the religion that would allow the American Muslim to take his or her rightful place amongst the various Muslim communities of the world.” \n\n\n\nIn 2003\, Shakir moved to Hayward\, California\, to serve as a scholar in residence and lecturer at Zaytuna Institute\, a non-profit educational institute focused on Islamic studies and surrounding topics. In 2005\, Zaytuna Institute published Shakir’s collection of essays\, SCATTERED PICTURES: REFLECTIONS OF AN AMERICAN MUSLIM. \n\n\n\nImam Zaid Shakir is a co-founder\, serves on its Board of Trustees\, and is a senior Faculty Member of Zaytuna College in Berkeley\, CA. He is amongst the most respected and influential Islamic scholars in the West. As an American Muslim who came of age during the civil rights struggles\, he has brought both sensitivity about race and poverty issues and scholarly discipline to his faith-based work. \n\n\n\nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org

In its 10th year\, World Hijab Day Organization has continued dismantling bias\, prejudice\, and discrimination against Muslim women through awareness\, education\, and empowerment. Taking part in this event and every bit of support means more victories for our sisters who are unfairly targeted and harassed for their choice of wearing hijab globally. World Hijab Day is a global campaign to promote religious tolerance\, cultural understanding\, and international solidarity. \n\n\n\nThe goal of this second-annual event is to provide sisters – both Hijabi and non-Hijabi – with an opportunity to: \n\n\n\n\nCelebrate the Hijab and promote pride in carrying on this noble tradition and campaign for a world where Muslimahs can proudly and freely practice her faith;\n\n\n\nCreate an environment where sisters feel empowered\, supported\, and inspired to wear hijab (particularly youth girls finding sorority and support)\n\n\n\nHost a bazaar where attendees can purchase modest clothing that supports Muslimah-run Islamic businesses and lunch from female-run food vendors.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker: \n\n\n\nSanaa Subhani holds a Master’s in Social Work and a bachelor’s in Human Development. She is the Founder and Executive Director at Wasilah Connections. She has served in the mental health field since 2007\, holding multiple roles\, from Residential Counselor for emotionally disturbed girls\, Activity Coordinator for Developmentally Disabled Adults\, Recovery Counselor for a Substance Abuse recovery home\, ABA Therapist\, and Medical Social Worker\, to current a Clinical Case Manager and a Crisis Specialist. \n\n\n\nHer internships include working with the low-income\, homeless population in single resident occupancy (SRO) homes and as a Clinical Therapist for a school with a behavioral and emotionally challenged population. Her volunteer work consists of being a minority affairs officer on her Community College Student body of government and as a Northern California Events Coordinator for MSA WEST. \n\n\n\nSanaa continues to work with the community on an ongoing basis helping all those in need. She has initiated support groups and is consistently networking with like-minded individuals to create resources and programs that cater to the community’s needs. \n\n\n\nWHERE IT ALL BEGANNazma Khan immigrated to New York City from Bangladesh at a young age. Not knowing the culture or the language\, Nazma was the only one wearing the hijab (headscarf) in middle school\, where she was constantly bullied. This constant discrimination followed her throughout high school and college. After 9/11\, her situation got even worse. Now\, she was being chased down the street and labeled a ‘terrorist’ for being visibly Muslim. She realized that many women in hijab in different parts of the world were encountering similar discrimination. She wanted to do something to address the stereotypes and improve circumstances. Therefore\, she invited women from all ethnic backgrounds to wear the hijab for a day to foster religious tolerance and cultural understanding. She called this global event ‘World Hijab Day.’ This event is commemorated in over 150 countries every February 1st. https://websitewww.worldhijabday.org \n\n\n\nThis event is commemorated in over 150 countries every February. SUMMARY:Quarterly Blood Drive @ Jumu'ah
DESCRIPTION:As people of faith\, it is in our blood to help. Be part of a lifesaving journey to save up to three lives with a 15-minute blood donation. \nThe MCC community has saved nearly 350 lives! This is our 22nd blood drive during Jumu’ah. Each blood drive has always been fully booked or near-fully booked! \nLet’s continue that trajectory at this blood drive and keep all our American Red Cross guests busy when they set up in our Banquet Hall from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on a Friday. Sign up at: https://mcceastbay.org/blood-drive \nIn 2023\, MCC will proudly host these quarterly blood drives during Jumuah services from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with our friends at the American Red Cross: \n\nFriday\, March 3\, 2023\nFriday\, June 2\, 2023\nFriday\, September 1\, 2023\nFriday\, December 1\, 2023\n\n[fusion_button link=”https://mcceastbay.org/blood-drive” text_transform=”” title=”” target=”_self” link_attributes=”” alignment=”” modal=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility\,medium-visibility\,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” color=”default” button_gradient_top_color=”” button_gradient_bottom_color=”” button_gradient_top_color_hover=”” button_gradient_bottom_color_hover=”” accent_color=”” accent_hover_color=”” type=”” bevel_color=”” border_width=”” size=”” stretch=”default” shape=”” icon=”” icon_position=”left” icon_divider=”no” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=””]Book An Appointment[/fusion_button] \nA Power Red donation targets O-\, O+\, A-\, and B- only. The donation process takes an additional 20-30 minutes because donors give two units of concentrated Red Blood Cells\, and your platelets and plasma are returned. \nBlood donors report feeling a sense of great satisfaction after making their blood donation. Why? Because helping others in need just feels good. \nIf you have visited India\, Pakistan\, or another high-risk malaria country and returned within the last 12 months\, you are not eligible to donate blood. \nEvery person who donates blood at MCC in 2023 will receive a voucher for a free meal at iniBurger – Gourmet Burgers in Pleasanton. These vouchers are generously donated by MCC congregation members Leeza and Abdullah Popal\, who own these establishments\, to encourage community and congregation participation. \nMCC Youth: If you are 16 to 18\, here is the donor requirements and parental authorization form link. \nOn the morning of the blood drive\, please complete the Rapid Pass online and bring the print-off to speed up the check-in process. After graduating from American High School and Chabot College he attended San Francisco State University where he majored in history. He grew up in a household with a deep love and reverence for poetry. At the age of five he began to memorize poems by Rumi and other great poets. His love of poetry continued to grow and eventually developed into a passion and calling that would allow him to teach regular classes on Rumi throughout California\, the U.S.\, U.K.\, Canada\, Australia\, Malaysia\, Germany and even as far as Konya\, Turkey\, where Mawlana Rumi is laid to rest. The nuances of the Farsi language\, in which he is fluent\, allows him the unique ability to bring Rumi’s poetry to life and to help listeners recognize Rumi’s essential message of peace\, love\, coexistence\, and connection with the Divine. He is the author and performer of “Layla & Majnun” play produced by Performing Lines in Perth Australia. Ustadh Feraidoon spends his free time reading\, studying\, and lecturing on many topics including Rumi and a wide collection of Farsi poetry\, spirituality\, and self-development.
