SUMMARY:"Islamicate Impressionism" | Artist Safia Latif
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\n\n\nJoin us for an afternoon exploring breathtaking and inspiring Islamic art with artist Safia Latif\, unraveling their meanings and how she is using art to recreate Islamic narrative. \n\n\n\n12 p.m. to 1 p.m. | Saturday\, July 22 | Conference Room | Join in person or watch live at mcceastbay.org/live | Free; no registration requiredSafia Latif is an oil painter based in California. Her work creatively reimagines Islamic narratives and concepts using visible brushwork and an emphasis on light and color. Latif has pioneered the practice of “Islamicate Impressionism\,” a novel style that is recognizably painterly and conceptually draws on the social and cultural phenomena associated with the Muslim world from Morocco to Indonesia. Latif’s work emerges as a departure from traditional Islamic art known for hyperdetailed miniature paintings and calligraphic and arabesque designs. Instead\, she focuses on visual sensations of Islamic themes\, highlighting the inherently cosmopolitan nature of Islam and conveying a sense of wonder and beauty. \n\n\n\nLatif earned an MA in Middle Eastern Studies and began a Ph.D. in religion\, focusing on the notion of piety as a form of social capital for Muslim women in the medieval world. Though she enjoyed academia\, she was always drawn to art and decided instead to use her knowledge of Islamic history to inform a meaningful body of work. Her paintings reflect a personal openness to faith\, likely owing to her diasporic background as the daughter of an American Russian Jewish convert to Islam and a Pakistani Muslim immigrant. \n\n\n\nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Weeklong Girls Camp | Sr. Maryam Awwal
DESCRIPTION:For girls ages 13-18\, join us for an intensive week of spiritual renewal\, where we go over Imam al-Haddad’s work\, The Lives of Man\, and connect ourselves to our Creator by learning the five stages of human life. \n\n\n\nMonday – Friday\,  July 24 – July 28 | 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. | Register required at mcceastbay.org/youth-intensive \n\n\n\nAbout the book \n\n\n\nA dramatic exposition of the classical Muslim division of human life into five stages: before conception\, life in the world\, life in the grave\, the resurrection\, and heaven or hell. Extensive Qur’anic and Hadith references explain the condition of the soul at each stage.Based on the Qu’ran and Hadith\, in this fascinating book\, Imam al-Haddad explains that every human being passes through several “lives:” before conception\, life in the world\, life in the grave\, the Resurrection\, and finally\, the Garden or the Fire. A complete Muslim must be aware of each of these if he is to be sufficiently prepared for eternal life. \n\n\n\nWhat happens after Death? Who are “Munkar and Nakir?” What will Heaven and Hell be like? What signs should we expect before the day of Judgement? Who is the Dajjal? When will the Mahdi appear? \n\n\n\nThese and many other questions are answered\, on the basis of the Qu’ran and Hadith\, in this fascinating book. Imam al-Haddad explains that every human being passes through the “lives:” before conception\, life in the world\, life in the grave\, the Resurrection\, and finally\, the Garden of the Fire. A complete Muslim must be aware of each of these if he is to be sufficiently prepared for eternal life. \n\n\n\nAbout the author \n\n\n\nImam Abdallah Ibn-Alawi Al-Haddad lived in Tarim in the Hadramant Valley between Yemen and Oman\, and is widely held to have been the ‘renewer’ of twelfth Islamic century. He was a noted authority on the Shafi’i school of jurisprudence\, and a writer on devotional matters\, both in poetry and prose. His works have been translated into many languages. Imam al-Haddad died in 1132 A.H. having spent his life bringing people to their Lord through his oral and written teaching\, and his exemplary life. SUMMARY:Fast On the Day Of Ashura
DESCRIPTION:We are now in Muharram\, which is the first month of the Islamic new year. The blessed day of ‘Ashura is this Friday\, July 28. \n\n\n\nPlease calendar now to fast on the 10th of this month and either the day before or after (so the 9th or 11th of Muharram). \n\n\n\nThe 10th of Muharram is on Friday\, July 28\, so let’s please fast either Thursday and Friday or Friday and Saturday\, inshaAllah. MCC will host a community Iftar on Friday\, July 28. \n\n\n\n\n– Shaykh Rami Nsour will also give a talk about this particular time on the day of Ashura: https://mcceastbay.org/event/ashura-program-iftar\n\n\n\n– More talks & sermons on Muharram: https://mcceastbay.org/muharram\n\n\n\n– For more information about the Day of Ashura\, see https://seekersguidance.org/articles/the-day-of-ashura\n\n\n\n\nWhat is the Day of Ashura?\n\n\n\nAshura marks the day that Moses and the Israelites were saved from Pharaoh by God creating a path in the Sea and is the Islamic equivalent to Yom Kippur. In Sunni Islam\, Ashura follows the traditions of Judaism with a day of fasting – commemorating the parting of the Red Sea for Moses and his followers to escape Pharaoh. The Prophet Muhammad thought this tradition was worth following\, so he fasted and encouraged his followers to do the same. On this day\, Muslims fast and celebrate by reflecting\, showing respect\, and thanks. Is fasting required? Fasting is not compulsory during Ashura\, but some Muslims choose to fast for one or two days. This is because the Prophet Muhammad was said to have fasted on the day of Ashura. \n\n\n\nWhen is Ashura 2022?\n\n\n\nAshura falls on the tenth day of Muharram (the first month of the Islamic year) in the Muslim calendar – which this year is Monday\, August 8. \n\n\n\nIn 2022\, the day is commemorated\, beginning on Sunday evening and ending on the evening of Monday\, August 8. Islamic religious dates are tabular: they begin at sunset on the first evening and end at sunset on the second evening. The date changes each year as the calendar used by Muslims – the Hijri calendar – is ten to 12 days shorter than the Gregorian. \n\n\n\nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \n\n\n\n\n– More talks & sermons on Muharram: https://mcceastbay.org/muharram\n\n\n\n\nThe month of Muharram is considered special by all Muslims and is one of the four sacred months of the year\, which brings with it the day of Ashura\, or the “Tenth day” of the month when fasting is recommended (with or without the addition of a day prior or after). \n\n\n\nFollowing the Prophetic tradition\, MCC invites all East Bay residents to fast on the day of Ashura\, which starts on the evening of Sunday\, August 7\, and during the day of Monday\, August 8. \n\n\n\nThe first is the Hijrah\, the migration of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD. This birth of a pluralistic Muslim community marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar and served as the key turning point for the first Muslims and the future of Islam. The Hijrah also marks the beginning of a new chapter for humanity\, where freedom of faith and justice for all became the cardinal principles of the newly founded society and a model for us to aspire to. \n\n\n\nThe other two historical events took place on the 10th day of Muharram\, called Ashura\, and after completing the migration to Medina\, the Prophet witnessed the Jews of Medina fasting to celebrate the victory of Prophet Musa (PBUH) and his people over the Egyptian Pharaoh. Prophet Muhammad then asked his companions to join this fasting tradition to express their gratitude to Allah for saving Musa and his people. \n\n\n\nOn the same day\, just six decades later\, the Prophet’s grandson Husayn ibn Ali was martyred in the Battle of Karbala. This was one of the saddest and most heartbreaking events in the history of Islam\, which we continue to mourn today. As we commemorate Ashura\, for Prophet Musa and Imam Husayn\, we are called to re-commit to our struggle against all forms of tyranny and oppression and to seek liberty and justice for all. Following the Prophet Muhammad tradition\, MCC invites you all to fast on the day of Ashura. \n\n\n\nLet us take this day to continue the practice of our beloved Prophet and pray for the unity of our ummah (community).
