SUMMARY:Post-Taraweeh Khatira | Badr: When the Impossible Became Possible | Imam Zaid Shakir
DESCRIPTION:The People’s Imam returns after long last to MCC this Ramadan! Imam Zaid will speak after the 20 rakat of Taraweeh ends. His visit coincides with the historic Battle of Badr\, which took place on the 17th of Ramadan. Imam Zaid will impart lessons from this battle when the impossible became possible. \n\n\n\n11:15 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. | Thursday\, March 28 | MCC Prayer Hall | Join in person or watch online at mcceastbay.org/live \n\n\n\nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \n\n\n\nThe historic Battle of Badr took place on the 17th of Ramadan. \n\n\n\nAs we commemorate the Battle of Badr (17th of Ramadan)\, we reignite our trust\, love\, and connection to Allah\, who made the seemingly impossible possible by granting Muslims victory and aiding them with Divine assistance. As Muslims in our Ummah struggle in different aspects of our lives\, it is Allah ﷻ again who can assist us in times of need and make what we feel to be insurmountable a true victory for this life and the Next. \n\n\n\nJoin us or tune in to reignite our Badr inspiration in our lives! This was when only 313 Muslims heroically fought on the battlefield at Badr against seemingly insurmountable odds; this night in 2024 is especially relevant given the struggles of our Palestinian brothers and sisters. \n\n\n\nOn the 17th of Ramadan\, our Beloved Prophet ﷺ courageously led 313 Muslims into their first major battle against their adversaries. \n\n\n\nThe Qurayshi Meccans\, with their 1\,000-strong army\, stood as formidable opponents against the believers. As the two sides clashed on the battlefield\, the Quraysh were taken by surprise and retreated in fear. \n\n\n\nAngels descended upon the battlefield\, turning the tide in favor of the Muslims. This victory marked their success in the first battle fought against the disbelievers. \n\n\n\nThe Muslim community faced further challenges\, with some resulting in less favorable outcomes. However\, the fledgling ummah persevered despite these setbacks\, paving the way for the continued dissemination of the Prophet’s message. \n\n\n\nThanks to the brave sacrifices of our predecessors 1400 years ago\, we are honored to continue spreading the uplifting message of Islam.

And in the Islamic Tradition\, the Prophet Muhammad PBUH said\, “The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer.” (Sahih Muslim) \n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers \n\n\n\nAnse Sawsan Imady \n\n\n\nUstadha Anse is the author of the forthcoming “Raising a Spiritual Child” manual and a leading scholar. We were honored to host a scholar of her caliber at our community center. Ustadha Anse Sawsan Imady is also a teacher to our own Ustadha Dr. Rania Awaad. Ustadha Anse inspired the Young Muslimah Mentorship program Dr. Rania inaugurated at MCC through The Rahmah Foundation. \n\n\n\nUstadha Rania Awaad \n\n\n\nDr. Rania Awaad\, M.D.\, is a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Stanford University School of Medicine. She is the Director of the Muslim Mental Health Lab and Wellness Program and the Director of the Diversity Clinic. She pursued her psychiatric residency training at Stanford and completed a postdoctoral clinical research fellowship with the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Her research and clinical work are focused on the mental health needs of Muslims. Her courses at Stanford range from teaching a pioneering study on Islamic Psychology\, instructing medical students and residents on implicit bias\, and integrating culture and religion into medical care to teaching undergraduate and graduate students the psychology of xenophobia. Her most recent academic publications include an edited volume on “Islamophobia and Psychiatry” (Springer\, 2019)\, Islamic Psychology (Routledge\, 2020)\, and an upcoming text on Muslim Mental Health. She has also produced a toolkit\, fact sheet\, CME course and is now editing a clinical textbook on Muslim mental health for the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Awaad is particularly passionate about uncovering the historical roots of mental health care in the Islamic intellectual heritage. Through her outreach work at Stanford\, she is also the Clinical Director of the San Francisco Bay Area branches of the Khalil Center\, a spiritual wellness center pioneering the application of traditional Islamic spiritual healing methods to modern clinical psychology. She has been the recipient of several awards and grants for her work. Before studying medicine\, she pursued classical Islamic studies in Damascus\, Syria\, and held certifications (ijaza) in the Qur’an\, Islamic Law\, and other Islamic science branches. Dr. Awaad has also served as the first female Professor of Islamic Law at Zaytuna College\, a Muslim Liberal Arts College in Berkeley\, CA\, where she taught courses on Shafi’i Fiqh and Women’s Fiqh and Qur’anic sciences for nearly a decade. In addition\, she serves as the Director of The Rahmah Foundation\, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating Muslim women and girls. At Rahmah\, she oversees the Murbiyyah spiritual mentoring program for girls. Dr. Awaad is a nationally recognized speaker\, award-winning teacher\, researcher\, and author in the Islamic and medical sciences. Follow her on I/T: Dr.RaniaAwaad \n\n\n\n– More from Dr. Rania: https://mcceastbay.org/rania \n\n\n\nUstadha Shamira Chothia Ahmed \n\n\n\nBorn and raised in California’s Central Valley\, Shamira is passionate about educating and empowering Muslim women to reach their highest spiritual potential through acquiring sacred knowledge.  \n\n\n\nAfter graduating as a Valedictorian from her large public high school\, Shamira’s studies led her — following a brief soul-searching stint at Georgetown University — to seek sacred knowledge from scholars on three continents — Africa\, Europe\, and Asia. \n\n\n\nAfter completing her intensive Alimah studies in South Africa and England and further studies in Damascus\, Syria\, Shamira received various licenses (ijazas) to teach the sacred sciences. \n\n\n\nIn 2005\, Ustadha Shamira taught Hanafi fiqh to women at the Zaytuna Institute in California and\, since then\, has led various Islamic sciences in venues across North America. In 2008\, she earned a Master’s Degree in Demographics and Social Analysis from the University of California at Irvine\, focusing on the identity formation of the Muslim-American population. \n\n\n\nIn 2013\, Ustadha Shamira specialized in the detailed rulings of menstruation\, lochia\, and abnormal discharge under Dr. Mufti Abdur Rahman Ibn Yusuf Mangera’s direction and assisted in compiling Imam Abu Hanifa’s Al-Fiqh al-Akbar Explained. \n\n\n\nIn 2008\, she earned a Master’s Degree in Demographics and Social Analysis from the University of California at Irvine \n\n\n\nUstadha Shamira is a co-founder of The Rahmah Foundation and is currently a teacher for Nur Al-Iman\, a full-time online shariah program teaching the fardh Al ayn and more to young women.  \n\n\n\nShe has passionately advocated for a natural birth\, infusing her natural birth classes with Islamic spirituality since 2009. She is also a certified lactation counselor\, a virtual birth doula\, and a birth consultant. \n\n\n\nYou can find Ustadha Shamira hiking\, playing\, or exploring with her husband and five children in sunny California. \n\n\n\nUstadha Hosai Mojaddidi \n\n\n\nUstadha Hosai Mojaddidi was born in Afghanistan and moved to the United States with her family at age two. She credits her Islamic journey to 1996\, when she began attending Islamic classes in Hayward\, California. Since then\, her teacher and mentor has been Shaykh Hamza Yusuf. \n\n\n\nOne of her main areas of focus is to help create a strong sisterhood for women in the community by leading halaqas (spiritual study circles) and support groups while offering individual spiritual counseling and mentoring. She noted that many of the spiritual problems encountered were actually reflective of the deep and complicated mental health issues of the community and would be better served by focusing on mental health. Thus\, along with her cousin Dr. Nafisa Sekandari\, they co-founded a website called Mental Health 4 Muslims (www.mentalhealth4muslims.com). \n\n\n\nUstadha Hosai is also a freelance writer and editor and lectures on various Islamic/spiritual topics. \n\n\n\n– More Ustadha Hosai: http://mcceastbay.org/hosai \n\n\n\nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org

Children of any age may join. The sessions are especially recommended for children 5 to 12. Sr. Aisha also highly encourages parents to have “The Book of Knowledge for Children” on hand during these sessions. Purchase the series here. \n\n\n\nShaykh Hamza Yusuf says about this book: “This work can help our Muslim children have a more humane and universal understanding of the ethics and teachings of Islam through Imam al-Ghazali. I believe the work is highly relevant and very likely life-altering for those who will be exposed to it early.” \n\n\n\n\nWatch Sister Aisha’s visit to the MCC Sunday School here.\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Author\n\n\n\nAisha Gray-Henry is the Founder and Director of the charitable foundation and publishing company Fons Vitae. Fons Vitae is currently engaged in the monumental task of bringing out Ghazali’s Ihya in readable English for parents and teachers and adapting it to accommodate children’s workbooks\, school curricula\, and an instructional DVD. The Book of Knowledge and The Principles of the Creed educational sets are available and used internationally\, with Purity and Prayer nearing completion. Included is a children’s interactive website\, HTTP://GhazaliChildren.org\, a pilot school project\, and a prison program. Translations into Urdu\, Arabic\, and Malay are underway. The Fons Vitae Ghazali Project has been launched with great acclaim in Morocco\, Canada\, Indonesia\, England\, and the USA. \n\n\n\nWho is Al Ghazali?\n\n\n\nAn alchemist is a person who can create gold from base metals. It is a quest as old as legend. The truth is that alchemy exists\, but not of base metals\, but of the human heart. \n\n\n\nImam al-Ghazali (1058-1111 CE) is probably one of the greatest alchemists ever. And in an epoch where the human condition is in its direst straits\, never more has there been a need for the chemistry of Imam al-Ghazali. \n\n\n\nA theologian\, jurist\, philosopher\, mystic\, and polymath\, Abu Hamid Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Ghazali is not only ranked amongst Islam’s finest scholars but is one of mankind’s finest students of the human condition. Known as Algazel to the medieval world\, he was born in Tus\, the Khorasan province of ancient Persia. \n\n\n\nWhen he had the academic world at his feet in his early thirties\, he spurned fame and fortune to go into a mode of self-denial and spiritual seclusion that lasted for many years. \n\n\n\nAlready an acknowledged master of Holy Law\, he re-entered society as a practiced Sufi – a true gnostic. A genius\, Imam al-Ghazali was fully proficient in Greek and Roman philosophy\, and he debunked its central tenets\, proving that Revelation was always going to be superior to human reason. Human thinking could never evolve\, he wrote\, in an existential vacuum. \n\n\n\nAll this prompted him to write his magnum opus\, the Ihya ‘Ulumad-Din (the Revival of the Religious Sciences). Today\, it is regarded as one of the classic works on the human psyche. In the Ihya the author explains how to turn one’s base instincts and desires into the golden ideal. \n\n\n\nToday’s modern world – devolved of spirituality and fraught with destructive ills such as materialism\, multi-national greed\, and violence – needs people like Imam al-Ghazali. This is because Imam al-Ghazali teaches a way to balance the body and soul\, thus allowing us to reconcile modernity with spirituality in its broadest and most universal sense. The Muslim Student Association (MSA) at California High School in San Ramon curated this series. \n\n\n\n\n– Watch the recitation on YouTube at mcceastbay.org/live\n\n\n\n– Watch the recitation on Facebook at mcceastbay.org/facebook\n\n\n\n– Mic Check Youth Qur’anic recitations at https://mcceastbay.org/mic-check\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \n\n\n\nReciters in Ramadan ’24: \n\n\n\n\n– March 15: Zidan Khan\n\n\n\n– March 22: Sidi Umair Shafi\n\n\n\n– March 29:\n\n\n\n– April 5: \n\n\n\n\nReciters in Ramadan ’23: \n\n\n\n\n– March 24: Muhammed Constantino\n\n\n\n– March 31: Muhammad Rasyiid Prihardono\n\n\n\n– April 7: Muhriz Munir\n\n\n\n– April 14: Ahmad Prihardono\n\n\n\n\nReciters in Ramadan ’22: \n\n\n\n\n– Rayhan Ali: https://youtu.be/b8aPeterrE0\n\n\n\n– Haanee Badal: https://youtu.be/gVMDtxrfIlw\n\n\n\n– Umair Shafi: https://youtu.be/JwRnFcdJ6LM\n\n\n\n– Zacharia Hamze: https://youtu.be/BUSLlXwlx3g\n\n\n\n\nReciters in Ramadan ’21: \n\n\n\n\n– Omar Ali: https://youtu.be/bcAnFhVm1w4\n\n\n\n– Ahmed Hussayni: https://youtu.be/6_56HU_Ngow\n\n\n\n– Yusra Constantino: https://youtu.be/EIn59jQibTM\n\n\n\n– Taha Abdullah: https://youtu.be/eU4K3EKB6cE\n\n\n\n\nSurah al-Kahf (Arabic: الكهف\, meaning: The Cave) is the 18th chapter (sūrah) of the Quran with 110 verses (āyāt). SUMMARY:Congregational Prayer During Solar Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:Help us revive a Sunnah by joining us at 9:18 a.m. for worship and the congregational solar eclipse prayer (Salat al-Kusoof) led by Qari Amar Bellaha. The Prophet (PBUH) would engage in worship in the masjid during this unique event. \n\n\n\nAccording to NASA\, though the solar eclipse will begin at about 8:05 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.\, we will perform the congregational four cycles of Salat al-Kusoof; the maximum eclipse is anticipated at 9:18 a.m. We welcome you and your family to come early and stay afterward to perform additional worship. \n\n\n\nSaturday\, Oct. 14 | 9:18 a.m. to 9:22 a.m. | Prayer Hall | Join in-person \n\n\n\nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \n\n\n\nFor how to perform this prayer\, see here. \n\n\n\nThe Saturday\, Oct. 14\, 2023\, annular solar eclipse will cross North\, Central\, and South America. It will be visible in parts of the United States\, Mexico\, and many countries in South and Central America. \n\n\n\nIn Pleasanton\, the eclipse will start at 8:05 a.m.\, with the maximum eclipse anticipated at 9:18 a.m. to 9:22 a.m. It will be over by 10:45 a.m. According to NASA\, we will witness a partial solar eclipse with the moon obscuring about 80 percent of the sun at the maximum eclipse point in the Tri-Valley. \n\n\n\nWhen the sun was eclipsed at the time of the Messenger of Allah\, he rushed nervously to the mosque\, dragging his cloak behind him and leading the people in prayer. \n\n\n\nHe told them that the eclipse was one of the signs of Allah\, with which Allah makes His slaves afraid\, and that it may be the cause of punishment coming upon the people. \n\n\n\nHe commanded them to do that which could prevent the punishment\, so he commanded them to pray when an eclipse happens and to make du’aa’\, seek His forgiveness\, give charity\, free slaves\, and do other righteous deeds so that the punishment would go away and not befall the people. \n\n\n\n“The sun and moon are two signs of Allah(ﷻ)\, and they do not become eclipsed for the death or birth of anyone. If you see that\, then pray until it (the eclipse) is over.” – Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) \n\n\n\nAccording to another hadeeth: “Call on Allah and pray until [the eclipse] is over.” \n\n\n\nSalat Al-Kusuf is a recommended Sunnah (Sunnah Muakkada). It is better to perform in congregation but can also be done individually. In Salatul Kusuf\, there is no athan or iqama. It is two rakats. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, it can be one long prayer until the eclipse is finished\, or it can be done in multiple prayers throughout the eclipse. \n\n\n\nSteps of Salatul Kusuf – The Solar Eclipse Prayer: \n\n\n\n\n1. Takbeerat Al-Ihram\n\n\n\n2. Recite Fatiha and long surah\n\n\n\n3. First Extended Ruku\n\n\n\n4. Stand up from Ruku – Read Fatiha (optional) followed by long surah\n\n\n\n5. Second Extended Ruku\n\n\n\n6. Stand up from Ruku\n\n\n\n7. Two Extended Sujoods\n\n\n\n8. Stand up for 2nd Rakat and Repeat Steps 1-7\n\n\n\n9. Salaam on both sides. If the eclipse is not finished\, you may do an additional two rakats or more in the same format until it is complete.\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0DbCbpR4Vg\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
