SUMMARY:Islamic Materials Collection Drive for Muslims Behind Bars
DESCRIPTION:We have already received nearly 1\,000 books\, Qur’ans DVDs\, prayer mats and more for about 325 Muslim inmates behind bars at two area prisons: 73 Muslims at Avenal State Prison and about 250 Muslims at California Medical Facility. Help us get more materials to them. \nThe MCC Prison Collection drive has been a great success. We will be collecting two additional days in August. Please come to the collection bin next to the metal roll-up door in the MCC parking lot: \n\nWednesday\, Aug. 26 noon to 8:30 p.m.\nFriday\, Aug. 28: noon to 6:30 p.m.\nSaturday\, Aug. 29: 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.\n\nNow more than ever\, area Muslim Prison Chaplains are trying to keep up to with the demand from Muslim inmates and those interested in Islam for faith-based literature. In quarantine in long stretches\, the inmates have more time to read and worship. \nThe MCC congregation is heeding the call and helping our hundreds of incarcerated brothers at two area prisons. We are asking our community members to scour your home for unused Qur’ans\, Islamic books and booklets\, prayer beads and prayer mats\, CDS\, cassettes and DVDs\, and kufis and thobes that are gathering dust and bring them to MCC so the Chaplains can distribute to the Muslims they serve each day. \nFaith Identity is More Important Than Ever\nDuring this COVID-19 pandemic\, faith has become a critical component for the inmates and these Islamic materials are essential items\, providing them an identity with their Islamic faith community. \nDuring shelter-in place\, the fleeting commodity we have a bit more of is time and this precious resource will be fast fleeting once we go back to a semblance of normalcy. For inmates\, time will remain the commodity they can leverage. Help them do that by donating new and used items. \nThrough this project\, we will be supporting the Muslim Chaplains at California Medical Facility in Vacaville\, Pelican Bay State Prison in Crescent City\, and Avenal State Prison. \nAn oft-neglected segment of our community\, Muslims prisoners face a host of daily challenges when it comes to practicing their faith. These challenges include the availability of halal food\, being able to wear religious head coverings\, having access to religious materials\, and even praying together.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStudies* have revealed that:\n\nMuslims only comprise about 1% of the U.S. population\, but they represent 9% of the prison population.\n90% of incarcerated Muslims are converts.\nSeveral prisons ban or severely restrict group religious activities.\nMuslim prisoners often have their religious property (such as prayer rugs\, beads\, and Qur’ans) mishandled or confiscated.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \n
