DESCRIPTION:Join a ten-week calligraphy session with Calligrapher Zubair Simab for beginner & intermediate students. The class is designed to learn the popular Thuluth style of writing. Students will learn the: \n\n\n\n\nUnderstanding of pen\, paper\, and ink\n\n\n\nPreparing the traditional calligraphy pen\n\n\n\nTechnically analyzing alphabet letters in Thuluth style\n\n\n\nIntroduction to fundamentals of composition\n\n\n\n\nTuesdays | 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. | Sept. 5 to Nov. 7 | $150.00/student. He is an active traditional arts practitioner and teacher in his local community. Zubair has exhibited\, lectured\, and demonstrated throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. His initial passion for calligraphy was sparked in his birthplace of Kabul\, Afghanistan\, where he began his training in the art of calligraphy as a young boy. Twenty-five years ago\, Zubair returned to the serious study and practice of traditional calligraphy. Zubair is influenced by the Afghan and Turkish master calligraphers. One of her main areas of focus is to help create a strong sisterhood for the women in the community by leading halaqas (spiritual study circles) and support groups whilst offering individual spiritual counseling and mentoring. She noted that many of the spiritual problems encountered were actually reflective of the community’s deep and complicated mental health issues and would be better served by focusing on mental health. Thus\, along with her cousin Dr. Nafisa Sekandari\, they co-founded a website called Mental Health 4 Muslims (www.mentalhealth4muslims.com).
