SUMMARY:Better Endings: Islamic Perspective on End-of-Life Care
DESCRIPTION:Did you know 63% of U.S. adults haven’t completed an advance directive? This means most Americans will leave critical end-of-life decisions to healthcare workers they’ve never met or family members who may not have clear guidance on their wishes. \nHow can we and our loved ones experience compassionate\, dignified care that honors Islamic values at life’s end? \nJoin us on this Zoom session for a thoughtful and supportive webinar on end-of-life care questions. \n2 p.m. to 3 p.m. | Saturday\, November 2\, 2024\, | Virtual only; register for the Zoom link at mcceastbay.org/directive \nSponsored by Yaser Ali Law & MCC East Bay. \nYaser Ali\, an attorney specializing in Islamic estate planning\, and Dr. Ramy Salah\, a hospice and palliative care physician\, will help you navigate the choices we all face as we approach end-of-life care. This session will cover how to make medical and spiritual decisions reflecting personal and religious values\, allowing us to approach our care—and that of our loved ones—with confidence\, compassion\, and respect. \nWhether you are thinking about your future care\, preparing for family members\, or simply seeking a better understanding of Islamic bioethics in end-of-life care\, this discussion will provide practical and meaningful guidance for these critical moments. \nAbout the speakers \nDr. Ramy Salah\nHospice and Palliative Care Physician \n\nRamy Salah\, MD\, is a practicing outpatient/home-based palliative care physician in the San Francisco Bay Area and the medical director of palliative care at a community hospital\, where he co-chairs the hospital bioethics committee. Dr. Salah completed medical school\, a residency in internal medicine at UCLA\, and a fellowship at UCSF in hospice and palliative care. He’s led advance care planning workshops for Muslims in mosques\, held talks on the Islamic perspective of end-of-life care in various settings\, including Al Balagh Academy\, and presented the Islamic bioethics on withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment at the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. His other projects include a study on the attitudes of Muslim chaplains on physician aid-in-dying and a review on Muslim and end-of-life care in non-Muslim majority nations. \nYaser Ali\, Esq\nIslamic Estate Planning Attorney \n\nYaser Ali is an estate planning attorney in Tempe\, Arizona\, specializing in personalized and efficient wealth transfer strategies.   Attorney Yaser holds a law degree from UC Berkeley\, a master’s degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education\, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida. An expert in Islamic estate planning\, Yaser is also the co-author of the American Bar Association’s Guide to Estate Planning for the Muslim Client and speaks frequently around the country to attorneys\, advisors\, and clients on how to incorporate religious preferences in the estate planning context.
