SUMMARY:US Geological Survey Meetings | San Jose State University
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. A.J. Faas and graduate student Gabbie Fall for a four-meeting Zoom discussion on how people are impacted by disasters and disruptions and will ask for your input on hazards and vulnerabilities in your communities. \n6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. | Saturday\, October 8 | Ages 18+ | Sign up at mcceastbay.org/SJSU-meetings \nJoin from PC\, Mac\, Linux\, iOS or Android: https://sjsu.zoom.us/j/83289706591 \nA group from San Jose State University is working on a large-scale project with the US Geological Survey to see how people are impacted by disasters and disruptions. This project has three parts but right now\, we are trying to start meetings with groups that are underrepresented in the current research to fill in any gaps. Dr. A.J. Faas and graduate student Gabbie Fall would like to start the first phase of this with MCC. It will be four meetings over about four months starting on Tuesday\, September 6. The meetings will introduce the project in more detail\, ask for your input on hazards and vulnerabilities in your communities\, and compare what you share with us to the research that the US Geological Survey has already done. The meetings will take place over Zoom and we would appreciate it if anyone willing to partner with us and attend these meetings could try to make all four but we understand that life happens and that is not always possible. If you have any questions\, you can email gabrielle.fall@sjsu.edu. We would really appreciate it if you could share your knowledge and experiences with us. \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \nThe U.S. Geological Survey is looking at the impact of a large earthquake on the Hayward Fault – specifically its effects on under-represented groups\, like Muslim-Americans living in the East Bay. They are looking at how underrepresented groups view disasters in general\, their perceived and actual preparedness\, and what vulnerabilities around them might differ from group to group.\n\nA team of Applied Anthropology graduate students at SJSU is working with the U.S. Geological Survey to get input from the East Bay Muslim community. They want to identify hazards and vulnerabilities and adjust their support/outreach to the Muslim community before the big one hits (May Allah protect us).\n\nThese grad students will hold four 2.5-hour virtual sessions with our community.\n\nThe second meeting is on Zoom at 6 p.m. this Saturday\, October 8. This session will introduce the project. You can then decide whether to be part of the following three sessions (ideally\, you will attend all four virtual sessions).\n\nIf you are willing to give your feedback and help our community be better prepared for a large earthquake\, please sign up at mcceastbay.org/SJSU-meetings
