SUMMARY:The Wheelchair Muslim Experience
DESCRIPTION:Understanding and compassion to the disabled is not just a fine idea. It is an imperative. \nJoin two wheelchair-bound disability advocates to learn about how American Muslims can meet both the spiritual and personal needs of Muslims living with disabilities in our community. \nAbdullah Mojaddedi and Ahmed Alkubaisi became wheelchair bound at a young age.\n \nTheir experiences in the Muslim community\, their different-abled life brimming with daily opportunities and struggles will give us an insightful community conversation on how to show true brotherhood & sisterhood in a way that keeps dignity and shows respect and how we can work towards masjids and Islamic communities of Ihsan (excellence). \n7 p.m. to 8 p.m. | Friday\, December 10 | MCC Prayer Hall \n\n\n\n– More Muhsen co-sponsored events at MCC: https://mcceastbay.org/muhsen\n\nSponsored by Muslims Understanding & Helping Special Education Needs (Muhsen) and MCC East Bay \n\n\nMCC is a proud to be a certified special-needs friendly masjid. See how we support our special needs families. Learn more about how we are privileged to accommodate our special needs community: https://mcceastbay.org/accommodating-disabilities \nAbdullah Mojaddidi graduated at San Jose State University with a BA degree in psychology and a minor in business in 2018 His Spinal Cord injury occurred on October 22\, 2006. In 2015\, his first job after his spinal cord injury was a part time job working with Bay Area and Recreational Program\, that advocates people with disabilities in recreational activities. He currently now has two part-time jobs: one at a nonprofit Agency for 4 years as an advocate for Afghan refugees and since October 2021\, a recent new hire at Apple. \nIn 2007\, Ahmed Al Kubaisi was walking past an American base in his hometown of Fallujah\, Iraq. He was on the way to the local market when he was allegedly shot by an American sniper. Al Kubaisi\, then 15 years old\, was paralyzed from the waist down. In 2013\, the U.N. Refugee Agency resettled him in the Bay Area and once he arrived he was hospitalized for 14 months receiving proper care and rehab. Predictably\, he has complicated feelings to navigate about America—having suffered greatly during the U.S. invasion of Iraq\, but also finding treatment and making friends upon moving. Ahmed has been in and out of hospital and treatment centers over the past decade. He’s unable to use his lower body and legs and continues to suffer from life threatening bed sore wounds that weren’t properly treated. In 2016\, he enrolled in adult school and received his GED and shortly thereafter had a one-year internship in the Human Resource department at East Bay Municipal Utility District. He has given presentation to physical therapy students at Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts. Kubaisi has been through many challenges physically and culturally while adjusting to life in America\, including not speaking English when arrived here nearly a decade ago. He looks forward to continuing his education and staying healthy. More about him here and here. \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org

SUMMARY:Disability & Islam
DESCRIPTION:Join Disability Advocate Joohi Tahir to learn about how American Muslims can meet both the spiritual and personal needs of Muslims living with disabilities in our community. \nSr. Joohi is cofounder of the national organization of the Muslims Understanding & Helping Special Education Needs (MUHSEN). She will talk about disability and Islam\, the stigma of disability in the American Muslim community and give the perspective of a special-needs parent and caregiver on how to design masjids and Islamic communities of Ihsan. \n7 p.m. to 8 p.m. | Tuesday\, Oct. 26 | MCC Conference Room \n\n\n\n– More Muhsen co-sponsored events at MCC: https://mcceastbay.org/muhsen\n\nSponsored by Muslims Understanding & Helping Special Education Needs (Muhsen)\, Muslim Community Association and MCC East Bay \n\n\nMCC is a proud to be a certified special-needs friendly masjid. See how we support our special needs families. Learn more about how we are privileged to accommodate our special needs community: https://mcceastbay.org/accommodating-disabilities \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \nMuhsen is a non-profit umbrella organization serving the community to establish a more inclusive “Special Friendly” environment for people of all Disabilities. Muhsen will advocate\, educate\, train and implement programs and services nationwide\, specifically to improve access for those with Disabilities in a faith based setting serving these Special Needs individuals as well as creating acceptance and inclusion by the community in all aspects. The organization was founded by Joohi Tahir and Dr. Omar Suleiman. Learn more at muhsen.org \nAbout the Speaker\nJoohi Tahir is Executive Director of a revolutionary nonprofit organization founded by Shaykh Omar Suleiman called MUHSEN (Muslims Understanding and Helping Special Education Needs). With her own family and daughter being affected by disability\, she started with small community initiatives\, talks\, and support groups\, leading up to speaking to our Scholars about the need for our communities to be more aware and be made more accessible for our loved ones with Disabilities. Muhsen’s goal is to provide a “Special Friendly” environment and build “Masjids of Ihsan” which will be welcoming environments for all. Whether physical\, neurological or cognitive disability\, we are collectively responsible for caring for these individuals. As a leader of this organization\, Joohi advocates and markets the needs for which MUHSEN builds programs and services across N. America. With these efforts\, MUHSEN strives to eventually re-mosque so many families who have become un-mosqued through Awareness\, Accommodation and Acceptance for all\, now serving a very underserved new market and being their voice. Joohi lives outside Chicago\, IL with a very supportive husband and is the busy mother of three daughters.
