SUMMARY:Domestic Violence in the American Muslim Community (+Community Dinner) | Imam Tahir Anwar
DESCRIPTION: \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nOctober is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  \nThis month\, and always\, we affirm that we will break the silence and empower women in the Muslim community so they are not forced to stay in marriages in which they are abused. \nLearn about the resources available to help our loved ones and how we can support our local organizations addressing this issue.  \nAll MCC Khutbahs on Friday\, October 4\, are also dedicated to this unspoken topic of forbidding domestic oppression. \nFriday\, Oct. 4 | 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. | MCC Prayer Hall | Join us in-person or watch live at mcceastbay.org/live \nSponsored by San Ramon Valley Islamic Center\, The Rahmah Foundation\, North American Islamic Shelter for the Abused (NISA) & MCC East Bay \nMCC proudly works with the North American Islamic Shelter for the Abused (NISA)\, which shelters women fleeing abuse and provides skills and resources to become self-sufficient. NISA staff and volunteers will be on hand during this event. \nSRVIC has generously offered to sponsor a post-program dinner for up to 200 guests. The program begins promptly at 7:15 p.m. Please arrive between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. to receive dinner tickets. Dinner will be served after the Isha prayers at 8:45 p.m. \nFamily Night Schedule \n\n6:52 pm: Maghrib congregational prayer\n7:15 pm:  Presentation by Sumera Siddiqui\, NISA\n7:30 pm:  Talk by a NISA Advocate\, Case Manager\n7:45 pm:  Take A Stand Against Domestic Violence | Imam Tahir Anwar\n8:15 to 8:45 pm: Q&A panel\n8:45 pm: Isha congregational prayer\n9 p.m.: Dinner served\n\n– More Imam Tahir: https://mcceastbay.org/tahir \n– Learn more about the NISA shelter: https://asknisa.org \n– More domestic violence talks at MCC: http://mcceastbay.org/nisa \n– More topics addressing community & social justice issues: http://mcceastbay.org/community \nIt’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month\, and let’s remember that Islam enjoins kindness and mercy and forbids oppression.  \nDomestic violence happens everywhere all the time and affects everyone. Women are the principal victims. Help us bring awareness.  \nDuring this Family Night and the four MCC Jumu’ah services\, MCC will invite various local Bay Area DV organizations to have a table alongside NISA. Our Khutbahs will also focus on raising awareness of domestic violence.  \nhttps://youtu.be/lilKZWT5Y68  \n \nThree to four million women are beaten annually\, and every 15 seconds\, a woman is abused in her home. Nationally\, domestic violence has become the number one cause of death among women. \nOne reaction from our community is\, “That’s a tragedy that doesn’t affect Muslim families.” But it does. While research on the prevalence of family violence among Muslims is just beginning\, Imams\, community leaders\, and social workers across North America confirm that Muslim women\, children\, and men are being affected by this devastating social problem. \nPhysical violence can lead to broken bones\, head injury\, vision loss\, and even death. Among victims\, emotional abuse leads to a broken spirit and feelings of hopelessness\, helplessness\, and oppression. \nDomestic abuse knows no boundaries. It occurs among well-known and little-known community members\, the rich\, the poor\, the well-educated and uneducated\, foreign-born and American-born\, and across all cultures\, races\, and religions. \nViolence against women is not an Islamic tradition. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed  us\, “I command you to be kind to women.” He said also\, “The best of you is the best to his family (wife). The Quran urges husbands to be kind and considerate to their wives. “Under no circumstances does the Quran encourage\, allow\, or condone family violence or physical abuse. Motherhood has the highest status in Islam. \nMarriage preparation education and premarital counseling can help future spouses learn skills that will assist them in developing a healthy\, violence-free family life. \nThis problem will not be eliminated unless we act. We must recognize the signs of spousal abuse and act to prevent it and work towards its elimination. We must encourage couples to seek spiritual and professional help. \nInsha-Allah (God willing)\, we must become partners against domestic violence. Spread the word and Stop the Hurt. \nWe end with a Muslim prayer for peace: \nO Allah\, You are As-Salaam – peace — and from You is all peace\, blessed are You\, O Possessor of majesty and honor.’

Shortly thereafter\, he traveled to Mauritania to pursue a full-time course of study where he was able to learn from one of Mauritania’s greatest scholars\, Murabit al-Hajj. Following an interim period of study in Damascus\, Syria\, Shaykh Yahya went on to spend the best part of seven years in Tarim\, in the Hadramawt Valley of Yemen. There\, he studied at the reputable school\, Dar al-Mustafa\, with the renowned scholars Habib Umar bin Hafiz and Habib Ali al-Jifri. \nSince that time\, Shaykh Yahya has been the official translator for Habib Umar and Habib Ali at various international speaking engagements\, including the Common Word Conference held at Yale University in 2008. Upon returning to the United States\, Shaykh Yahya served as a full-time instructor at Zaytuna College. He holds a B.A. in Near Eastern Studies from UC Berkeley\, an M.A. in Islamic Studies from the Graduate Theological Union\, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Cambridge\, England\, in collaboration with Dr. Tim Winter (Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad). \nHe is the Founding Director of al-Maqasid where he is a full-time scholar and teacher. Al-Maqasid’s mission is to cultivate holistic learning environments rooted in knowledge\, devotion\, and service by providing full-time\, part-time\, online\, and community programs. \nAbout Ustadh Amjad:\nUstadh Amjad Tarsin was born in Ann Arbor\, Michigan and spent his early childhood there. He has also lived in Malaysia and Saudi Arabia\, growing up within diverse cultures. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts at the University of Michigan in English Literature and Islamic Studies. It was during his university years that Amjad developed a deeper connection to his faith\, studying the Islamic sciences with teachers locally and internationally\, and became actively involved in community service and youth engagement. After spending a transformative year studying Islam abroad at Dar al-Mustafa\, Yemen\, Ustadh Amjad returned to America to start his studies at the University of Michigan Law School. Yearning to fulfill his calling to community building\, spiritual development\, and service\, Ustadh Amjad changed career paths and enrolled in Hartford Seminary’s Islamic Chaplaincy program. While completing his degree\, Ustadh Amjad worked as a part-time Muslim chaplain at Fairfield University\, Connecticut. In 2012\, Sidi Amjad was selected as the University of Toronto’s first full-time Muslim Chaplain. Ustadh Amjad continues to study and teach on a regular basis at SeekersHub Toronto. He currently resides with his wife and son in Toronto\, Canada. \nUstadh Hasan Petrus was born and raised north of the border in Montreal\, Canada. His pursuit of sacred Islamic knowledge has taken him to two continents to sit at the feet of those who still carry unbroken chains of sacred learning. During his stay in South Africa\, Ustadh Hasan focused primarily on Quranic Studies. He subsequently moved to Tarim\, Yemen\, to study at Dar al-Mustafa. During his time there\, he was able to study various  Islamic sciences\, benefiting directly from Habib Umar bin Hafiz\, Habib Muhammad bin Abdullah al-Aydarus\, Habib Hashim bin Aqil\, Shaykh Umar bin Husayn al-Khatib\, and others. \nHe returned from Tarim in 2015 to become a faculty member at Al-Maqasid\, where he leads the Classical Arabic Program. \nQuestions? events@mcceastbay.org \nAbout the Book Used in the Seminar (optional purchase): \nThe Mysteries of the Prayer and Its Important Elements\n Book 4 of Ihya’ ‘ulum al-din\, The Revival of the Religious Sciences\nby Imam al-Ghazali (Author)\, Michael Abdurrahman Fitzgerald (Translator) \n\nIn The Mysteries of the Prayer and Its Important Elements\, book four of the 40 books of the Revival of the Religious Sciences\, Abū Hāmid al-Ghazālī explains the inner and outer meanings of the prayer\, a central practice for Muslims. He explains the acts involved in the outward elements of the prayer and outlines which of these acts are obligatory and which are sunna. He then discusses the inward requisites of the prayer—the practices of the heart— and presents practical remedies for a distracted heart. He also discusses the annual prayers and the prayers and supplications related to events such as eclipses\, the prayer for rain\, guidance\, and need. This readable yet comprehensive work covers an array of issues from the essential outward aspects of how to pray\, to the inward aspects of the state of the heart during the prayer and how to humble oneself completely. As a practical\, yet profound book\, it is essential reading for Muslims who seek a deeper comprehension of prayer\, and for all those interested in understanding the meaning and place of prayer in Islam. \nImam al-Ghazali (1058–1111 CE) of Tus in Iran was one of the greatest scholars in the history of Islamic thought. He made outstanding contributions in logic\, philosophy\, jurisprudence\, legal theory\, and mysticism. \n \n\n  \n \n  \nExcellence in Prayer\nAn Abridged Seminar on Book 4 of the Iḥyā’ ‘Ulūm al-Dīn \nSession 1: The Merit of Prayer \n\n• The merit of the adhan\n• The merit of the obligatory prayers\n• The merit of the congregational prayer\n• The merit of prayer in the mosque\n• The merit of prostration\nSession 2: The Inner States of Prayer \n• Presence of heart (ḥuḍūr al-qalb)\n• Understanding (tafahhum)\n• Exaltation (ta‘ẓīm)\n• Awe (hayba)\n• Hope (rajā’)\n• Shame (ḥayā’) \nSession 3: Reverence (Khushū‘) and Presence of Heart (Ḥuḍūr al-Qalb) \n• The merit of reverence (khushū‘)\n• Outward distractions and their treatment\n• Inward distractions and their treatment\n• Cutting down the tree of desires \nSession 4: The Inner Meanings of Prayer \n• Adhan\n• Purification\n• Cleaning impurities from the body\, clothes\, and place of prayer\n• Covering the body\n• Facing the qibla\n• Iqāma\n• Standing\n• Intention\n• Takbīra al-iḥrām (saying “Allāhu Abkar”)\n• Opening supplication (du‘ā’ al-istiftāḥ)\n• Ta‘awwudh (saying “I take refuge in Allah from the accursed Devil”)\n• Recitation of the Fātiḥa\n• Recitation of Quran\n• Rukū‘ (bowing)\n• Straightening up (‘itidāl)\n• 1st sujūd (prostration)\n• Sitting between the two prostrations\n• 2nd sujūd (prostration)\n• Tashahhud (testification of faith)\nSending ه’لprayers upon the Prophet (PBUH)\n• Supplication\n• Taslīm (saying “as-salāmu ‘alaykum”)\n• After the Prayer

The full text of the proclamation is below.\n\nAmerican Muslim Appreciation Month\nCity of San Ramon\n\n\n\n\nWHEREAS\, Freedom of religion holds distinction as a cherished and essential right and a fundamental value upon which this nation was founded; and  \nWHEREAS\, Muslims have been part of U.S. history from the beginning and have contributed to the production of wealth and construction of the nation; they are also part of the rich history of the civil rights movement; and \nWHEREAS\, Muslims are teachers\, lawyers\, doctors\, social workers\, tech workers\, nurses\, and business owners among numerous other valued professions\, as well as peace builders\, activists\, entrepreneurs\, and politicians; and \nWHEREAS\, there is a thriving community of 250\,000 Muslims in the Bay Area and over 100 mosques and religious centers; and Muslims pursue diverse professions and make rich contributions to the social\, cultural\, and economic vibrancy of the United States\, and have distinguished themselves by fostering greater respect and understanding among all people through faith and services; and  \nWHEREAS\, the shelter-in-place order due to the COVID-19 outbreak forced the temporary closure of Muslim nonprofits\, community centers\, mosques\, schools\, businesses\, and other establishments. Mosques and community organizations have provided online programming and sermons along with small group prayers outside. They have answered the call for help by donating funds\, distributing food\, by sewing masks\, and by serving on the front lines as healthcare and service workers; and they have educated their congregations about social distancing guidelines and practices to keep the community safe; and \nWHEREAS\, the San Ramon Valley Islamic Center (SRVIC) in partnership with Support Life Foundation and 47 other Bay Area mosques and organizations have packed and distributed over 100\,000 lbs. of food staples and masks to at-risk communities in the Bay Area through their “You Are Not Alone” program.  SRVIC has held blood drives with the American Red Cross\, and is one of the largest donors to the “Contra Costa Food Bank” donating $25\,000-30\,000 every year\, in addition to the estimated $150\,000 in donations to community members in need; and \nWHEREAS\, it is appropriate to acknowledge and promote awareness of the myriad of invaluable contributions of Muslims in California and across the country\, and extend to them the respect and camaraderie every person deserves. \nNow\, therefore\, be it resolved\, the City of San Ramon does hereby recognize the California State Designation of August 2021 as Muslim Appreciation and Awareness Month (HR 58)  to acknowledge the rich history\, contributions\, and guiding virtues of Muslims and to commend all Muslim communities in California for the lasting positive impact they have made toward the advancement of our city and country. \nCitations:\n1.
