Ongoing Campaign to Free Imam Jamil Al-Amin

The Islamic Shura Council, a member of the U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO), joins their campaign to free Imam Jamil Al-Amin who is serving a life sentence for a crime he did not commit for the last 21 years. Imam Al-Amin, now 77 years old, has gone blind due to being denied cataract surgery where he is incarcerated at the United States Penitentiary in Tucson, Arizona away from his family and attorneys.

Currently, his case is under review by the Fulton County Conviction Integrity Unit, in Georgia. There is no evidence placing Imam Jamil at the scene of the crime: no fingerprints, no gun residue, no DNA. In fact, Otis Jackson has been consistent in his confession of the crime for which Imam Jamil is serving a life sentence (giving multiple written sworn statements and testifying in another trial under oath), and evidence corroborates Otis Jackson’s confession.

Help Sahaba Initiative start Mobile Food Pantry

Islamic Shura Council member, Sahaba Initiative, needs your help to raise funds for a mobile food pantry before August 31st, to alleviate hunger in the Inland Empire, a region historically difficult for low-income families to obtain food. The mobile pantry will travel to different locations (grocery stores, community centers, schools, homeless shelters, etc.) to deliver fresh fruit, vegetables, and other groceries.

Over the past year, we had to rapidly expand our ability to distribute food! We added new approaches to getting food out to the people in need, including drive-thru distributions where thousands of cars drove through and picked up a bag of food and we began to deliver food to select communities such as the schools, community centers, and senior homes that could not reach us.

Click here to support Sahaba Initiative’s mobile food pantry for the underserved in the Inland Empire.

State of CA Rental Assistance

The Islamic Shura Council is pleased to announce the State of California’s updated COVID-19 rental and utility assistance.

Whether it’s a health-related event or a significant financial hardship, COVID-19 has affected us all. As our state continues to recover, we are committed to keeping families housed and recognize that California renters and landlords have enough to worry about. We want to make sure that rent and utilities aren’t on that list of worries.

The CA COVID-19 Rent Relief program helps income-eligible households with rent and utilities, both for past due and future payments. The federal Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 provides tenant (renter) protection laws and funding to support this program and was signed by Governor Newsom in January 2021.

Depending on the address of your rental property, you may be eligible for a local program. Apply Now to determine which program is right for you.
