Funeral expenses are traditionally settled from the deceased’s estate. However, when a deceased person does not have the financial means for burial, the MCC East Bay will always step in to fulfill our local community’s obligation (farḍ kifayah).
MCC provides financial assistance only to Muslim residents in the San Francisco Bay Area who need help meeting funeral expenses. The deceased must have been a Muslim while alive to qualify for our burial assistance.
In most cases, a family member should apply for burial assistance for the deceased. MCC will process an application only after death occurs. The only exception is if a medical doctor deems that death is imminent (generally within two days) and the family wishes to apply for burial assistance to streamline this difficult process preemptively.
After applying below, MCC’s Burial Administrator, Aminah Abdullah, will determine eligibility within 24 hours.
The MCC uses its dedicated Burial Fund and, at its discretion, uses its Sadaqah Fund to cover indigent Muslim’s final expenses. MCC will never use its Zakat funds for burial assistance.
MCC does not provide its funeral services. For family members who can pay for funeral and burial services, we recommend contacting one of the two local mosques mentioned on our funeral arrangements page.
Please also submit a dua request here so our congregation may pray at our weekly service for the sick or deceased.
