Understanding Addiction: An Islamic & Clinical Perspective
Join Maristan for a two-part Learning Circle exploring substance use and addiction through both Islamic and clinical perspectives. We are pleased to welcome Dr. Amer Raheemullah, MD, as our guest speaker for this special session.
This Learning Circle will provide foundational education to help community members better understand addiction as both a health concern and a spiritual challenge. Participants will explore how Islamic teachings and clinical perspectives can inform compassionate and informed responses to individuals and families affected by substance use and addiction.

About Our Guest Speaker
Dr. Amer Raheemullah, MD, is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University and Director of Stanford Hospital Addiction Services. He initially launched Stanford’s addiction services at a single site and, after demonstrating significant improvements in patient outcomes, led its expansion across Stanford’s multiple hospital sites.
Dr. Raheemullah also holds an MA in Islamic Texts from Zaytuna College and teaches through MadinaHouse.org. His work brings together clinical expertise and Islamic scholarship, offering a valuable perspective on substance use, addiction, and recovery.
