Jumu’ah Services @ MCC & Dublin Library

For MCC’s Jumu’ah services on Friday, Aug. 18:

Dawood spent five summers teaching Arabic language at the Zaytuna Summer Arabic Intensive. Dawood has worked with colleagues to establish “Learning Outside of the Classroom” program at Zaytuna College, which includes service learning trips and a revival of traditional athletics found in swimming, archery and horseback riding. Prior to Zaytuna College, at Dartmouth College Dawood provided spiritual and religious support, offered educational seminars, and led congregational prayers for Muslim students, and residents of the greater Hanover area. Dawood also worked to foster understanding and dialogue among diverse campus groups by building and maintaining interfaith relations. During his residence in South Africa, Dawood converted to Islam and then spent five years in Damascus studying Arabic, Islam, and spirituality. Upon completion of his studies, he relocated to New Haven, CT where he served as Imam of Masjid Al-Islam. While in New Haven, he also worked as a teaching assistant and engaged in research at Yale University. Dawood also served as Director of Outreach at the Zayed Center for Islamic Culture in the United Arab Emirates, engaging in public speaking within U.A.E. and abroad, emphasizing ethics and tolerance between Muslim and non-Muslim communities. Ustadh Mahdy Amine was born and raised in Chicago. Attending Universal School, he served as captain of the high school basketball team, then graduated from Loyola University Chicago at the age of 19 with a double bachelor in economics and political science, and after that from the University of Minnesota School of Law-all while serving as President of the Muslim Students Association at each respective institution. Concurrent with his studies and work, Mahdy helped found CAIR Chicago, has been teaching for nearly 20 years, and served as a member of the band Noorification, which released two albums, and four music videos, and performed at over 100 national and international venues. Mahdy is married, has three little girls, and is blessed to be a survivor. In 2012, Mahdy resigned from his job as Corporate Counsel for Dell Corporation to attend Zaytuna College, the first-ever accredited Muslim liberal arts college in the US, graduating with the first class in 2014. He then visited and studied briefly in Tarim, Yemen. Mahdy currently works as Senior Vice President, General Counsel of a global cancer diagnostic and research laboratory, teaches Islamic Studies at Ilm Tree, a home school co-op in Lafayette, CA, regularly delivers sermons at various communities, and serves as Convert Care Coordinator at Ta’leef Collective in Fremont, California.

Shaan Mukhtar was raised in the MCC community and from a young age had been involved in youth programs throughout the Bay Area. He has helped start various high school MSA and youth Halaqas at different mosques. He is currently a senior at UC Davis where he is finishing up his undergraduate degree.

For parents attending with young children indoors, MCC offers private mothers’ and fathers’ rooms with an audio and visual connection to Prayer Hall. Parents can watch the sermon and pray while working with other parents with young children. The mothers/fathers prayer room is just past the Banquet Hall doors into the school area.
